Christmas Memories: Christmas Past

Christmas Past

by Pat Conover
Christmas is in the air
Joyous feelings are everywhere

Children are all filled with joy
Looking for that special toy

This is meant to be a happy time of year
Everyone filled with Christmas cheer

Presents are wrapped under the tree
Waiting for Santa to come down the chimney

Hiding on the stairway while Santa leaves toys
Is one of my favorite memories of joy

Dad would put our gifts under the tree
Mom would call us one, two, three

Memories of Christmas past
Are fading oh so fast

Mom and Dad are not home anymore
No Christmas wreath on the back door

No smell of Christmas baking
No fun and laughter of candy making

The house has grown silent and still
There's no more family gatherings on the hill

If we could only go back awhile
When we were a child

And thank how those Christmas's meant so much
All it took was a parents loving touch

Spot tickweed patches in summer and mark locations. Ironweed, a very common wildflower, is also a producer of Frost Flowers. An update to; Kentucky Color: Rare sight. Patch of frost flowers by Billy Joe Fudge, now with new photos added.

Homeplace on Green River, 6035 New Columbia RD, Campbellsville, KY

Update December 22, 2009: Here is a link to a picture of Tickweed. If you see these growing in late summer or early fall then check back in early, below freezing mornings especially after a soaking rain or an extended time of foggy wet weather to see if Frost Flowers have developed:
Summer photos of tickweed at "2bnthewild.com"
The largest Frost Flower patch I've ever seen was on a steep roadside in the Turkey Neck Bend area of Cumberland and Monroe Counties in late fall.

Frost flowers common on Ironweed stems

In researching the Frost Flower phenomenon, one will find that
Ironweed
, one of Adair County's most beautiful wldflowers, also has Frost Flowers. An example is Watersheds.org
