E.W. Grover wants to thank Green River Cowboys

About the tragic drowning of his father, William "Bill" Grover: In a sad hour, the Adair County Way at its finest

Sir/Ma'am:

Thank you for the article on my father.For myself and the rest of my family, it helped tremendously to understand better the events that occurred that night. For that again, please accept my thanks.

I am trying to contact members of the Green River Cowboys to thank them again, but when I was there I failed to get their contact information.

Other than my Step Mother do you have any of their information?

I can't find a web site and I can only recall first names Gary and Barry, I think.

s/SGT E.W. Grover

Mr. Grover, we'll forward your letter to Barry Jones of the Green River Cowboys. If you will send contact information to us we will also forward that to him -EW.

Road 80 Miracle Hill

2009-12-20 - Russell Springs Highway, Adair County, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. It could be called 'Miracle Thrill Hill' because it is a miracle the Russell Creek creekbed is piled high with 1950s and 1960s cars. Time was, when teenage boy drivers from both Adair and The County, their insensate brains stowed away in their scrotums, used the hill to "bury the hand" on speedometers in their fathers' slow old Plymouths and six cylinder Chevrolets- cars which could barely top 75 mph on the level/ But using the steep slope of the Russell Creek Hill had the thrill of reaching 110-112 when they reached the bridge. The scene is approximately 9 mile east of Columbia on KY 80. The hill has a more practical use in cycling, allowing riders to shoot the east side hill, making a third of the ascent without turning the pedals on revolution.

Chuck Hinman, IJMA 027: Memories of Christmases Past

It's Just Me No. 24, Memories of Christmas Past
The next earlier Chuck Hinman story, Chuck Hinman, IJM No.92: Christmas Memories from My Show Biz Days Reader comments to CM are appreciated, as are emails directly to Mr. Hinman at: charles.hinman@sbcglobal.net

by Chuck Hinman

My earliest Christmas remembrance is in the 1920's when we lived in the farm home where I grew up between Liberty and Wymore in southeastern Nebraska. The house was large, almost new and had all the "bells and whistles" except one. There was no fireplace and/or fireplace chimney for Santa to enter the house! Ye gads, Dad, why did we move here? This house is Santa Claus unfriendly!

Thanks to BJ Fudge for sharing frost flowers

About: Frost Flower with a kite tail photo by Billy Joe Fudge

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

I've seen a lot of flowers and taken pictures of 100's different colors and sizes. I've never heard nor ever seen something as amazing as this before.

This just goes to show how amazing nature can be; man can try to replicate natures beauty to only miserably fail.

Jim finds 1901 Christmas Colic poem by Dr. Jones

Dr Jones remembers Christmas with righteous indigestion

By "Jim"

"James Thomas Jones, much better known as Dr. Jones or simply J.T. Jones..., a dentist, had been in practice [in Russell County] for several years when he removed to the Montpelier community in Adair County in late 1900 or early 1901...

'''Dr. Jone" poetry' [was]...sometimes sly social commentary, sometimes poignant, sometimes rib-tickling funny, and always witty..."His works appeared sporadically in the Adair County News for several years, beginning in the late 1890s. The following example appeared in the February 29, 1908 edition:

Christmas Colic
by Dr. Jones
I do believe good Mistress Jones
My wife--the gracious creature,
At telling one how he should do,
surpasses any preacher.

She kindly whispered, "Now my dear
We trust you'll not be ailing,
But this is Christmas turkey time,
And--well, you know your failing."

I thanked her for such kind regard,
But thought it rather formal;
Assured her I was feeling fine,
My appetite was normal.

So every thing was done up brown;
That fowl was a beauty,
With jelly, pie, preserves and cake
From snowy white to sooty.

Good turkey sop and fatty bread
Oh, what mortal blessing;
For real creature comfort though,
Just give me turkey dressing.

I woke at 10 o'clock p.m.,
In dire desperation,
Longed for a noted specialist--
A speedy operation.

With draughts and drugs was freely dosed,
While I in pain was puffing;
The lady, Mistress Jones, remarked:
"Perhaps you'd like some stuffing."

I danced a reel around the room
And on the bed did flounder;
"Oh yes!" she said; "I told you so,
It's just old fashioned founder."

Now may we all when Christmas comes
Be full of fun and frolic,
Good will and happiness besides
But not of Christmas colic.

(Transcription of poem & quoted text from "The Wit & Wisdom of Dr. J.T. Jones of Montpelier, Kentucky"; used with permission.)
"Jim" is the penname of one of the finest historians anywhere. His work is distinguished by his ability to match present happenings with events from the past. Among his broad interests are Adair County, Lindsey Wilson College, Jamestown and Russell County, KY.

Carol Perkins: Christmas on Christmas Island?

After remembering Christmases past and present and considering Christmas possibilities elsewhere, she comes to the conclusion one would expect from a native daughter of Old Met.
The next earlier Carol Perkins store, Small town department stores

By Carol Perkins

"How'd Ya Like to Spend Christmas On Christmas Island?"

Edmonton is at its finest during Christmas thanks to business owners and city/county employees and many volunteers who decorate the square to create holiday spirit. I love the lights around windows, lighted trees, wreaths, and greenery. For example, the tree in the upstairs window of the courthouse is magnificent. The courthouse yard also glows as the lamplights inhale the crisp air.

When I saw the decorations going up at the light poles, I was as excited as a kid. I admit I don't know who does this job, but I'm grateful to them. This is good for the morale of a small town or for any town.

Why are seen frost flowers only seen in certain places?

About: Frost Flower with a kite tail Frost flower photo by Billy Joe Fudge

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

I have only seen the frost flowers once before and I didn't have a clue as to what they were.

I saw then in a field in North Russell County next to the lake. I stopped and got out to look but couldn't figure out why they were only in a certain spot and not all over the fields.

They were only in a spot about 100 ft. square and there was no more anywhere around, because I kept looking and didn't see them anywhere else.

Now, can anyone explain why they only appear in certain spots and places?

Thanks.

Shadows on the Wall of the Cave

In the dark February of 1925 while Floyd Collins was lying trapped in Sand Cave, the young writer Robert Penn Warren was just learning and practicing his craft at Vanderbilt University. His craft at that time was poetry.

So far as I know he showed no particular interest in the story which was unfolding some ninety miles north of Nashville.
