The house was large, almost new and had all the "bells and whistles" except one. There was no fireplace and/or fireplace chimney for Santa to enter the house! Ye gads, Dad, why did we move here? Jim finds 1901 Christmas Colic poem by Dr. Jones Dr Jones remembers Christmas with righteous indigestion By "Jim" "James Thomas Jones, much better known as Dr. Jones or simply J.T. Jones..., a dentist, had been in practice [in Russell County] for several years when he removed to the Montpelier community in Adair County in late 1900 or early 1901... '''Dr. Jone" poetry' [was]...sometimes sly social commentary, sometimes poignant, sometimes rib-tickling funny, and always witty..."His works appeared sporadically in the Adair County News for several years, beginning in the late 1890s. The following example appeared in the February 29, 1908 edition: "Jim" is the penname of one of the finest historians anywhere. His work is distinguished by his ability to match present happenings with events from the past. Among his broad interests are Adair County, Lindsey Wilson College, Jamestown and Russell County, KY. 2009-12-20 11:02:53 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Local History
Carol Perkins: Christmas on Christmas Island? After remembering Christmases past and present and considering Christmas possibilities elsewhere, she comes to the conclusion one would expect from a native daughter of Old Met. The next earlier Carol Perkins store, Small town department stores By Carol Perkins "How'd Ya Like to Spend Christmas On Christmas Island?" Edmonton is at its finest during Christmas thanks to business owners and city/county employees and many volunteers who decorate the square to create holiday spirit. I love the lights around windows, lighted trees, wreaths, and greenery. For example, the tree in the upstairs window of the courthouse is magnificent. The courthouse yard also glows as the lamplights inhale the crisp air. When I saw the decorations going up at the light poles, I was as excited as a kid. I admit I don't know who does this job, but I'm grateful to them. This is good for the morale of a small town or for any town. Why are seen frost flowers only seen in certain places? About: Frost Flower with a kite tail Frost flower photo by Billy Joe Fudge To ColumbiaMagazine.com: I have only seen the frost flowers once before and I didn't have a clue as to what they were. I saw then in a field in North Russell County next to the lake. I stopped and got out to look but couldn't figure out why they were only in a certain spot and not all over the fields. They were only in a spot about 100 ft. square and there was no more anywhere around, because I kept looking and didn't see them anywhere else. Now, can anyone explain why they only appear in certain spots and places? Thanks. sLarry Joe Murray 2009-12-20 07:32:23 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Letters and Reader Feedback

A Kindred Spirit: The Underwear Tree By Teresa Bell Kindred Nanahood My husband and I have been married for twenty nine years. We are the parents of four boys (including a set of identical twins) and one girl. When they were all small our Christmas was pure chaos. Because our daughter was always outnumbered by the boys and their friends she learned to be tough. The year she was twelve years old we put up our tree one busy week night, but didn't have time to decorate it. They were all disappointed and didn't want to wait, but it was way past their bedtime and they had school the next morning. They went to bed, but they weren't happy about not decorating the tree.
