Pat Hare agrees with Tracy McCarol

About: Two cents worth: Base of dome should have been broader

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

I agree with Tracy McCarol, the dome does not do anything for the Justice Center. It is too small for that building. Looks much better without it.

Cooperation can get things done

About: Courthouse Thermometer on Courthouse lawn

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

The $150.00 approved by the court was only for the discounted cost by The Sign Factory for the vinyl lettering. Ann Melton told the group that if the court didn't approve she would pay for the letters. Haskin Coomer & Sons donated the lumber and backing board. Jeffries Hardware donated the paint. MSP, Inc. prepared the sign and workers from the D Class facility helped erect the sign. Just wanted to give credit to these community betterment minded firms and show how cooperation can get things done quickly.

Two cents worth: Base of dome should have been broader

About: Adair Justice Center With and Without Rotunda Dome

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

Ed, It maybe just me, but the new dome on the justice center looks awful. I agree the dome needed to be taller, but it needed to be totally reconfigured, not just raised it up. The base of the dome should have been much broader and the arch of the dome needed to be taller. That's just my two cents and I am sure many of people see it that way.

Adair Co. Board of Education Dec. 17, 2009 report

In the Thursday, December 17, 2009 meeting:
  • Board faces immediate challenges s after December 15, 2009 vote
  • Atmosphere seemed like a funeral at CWC this week, Principal Jones says
  • Bright side of election is trend. One system needed six elections to pass measure
  • If next Nickel Tax election sees gains shown in 2009, election would be a tossup
  • Reconfiguration will be considered in January 2010; will likely end discrimination based on geographic considerations
  • Board recognizes latest National Board Certified teachers, Cindy Walker and Jennifer Kemp. System has more National Board teachers than in neighboring school district
  • Board approves non-resident contracts. Adair County has 26 students from out of county; 87 Adair County residents go to school in other counties
  • Lindsey Wilson College gives weightlifting equipment valued at over $20,000 (used; $50,000 if new) to athletic department
  • Jeff Hoover rehired as board attorney
  • Meeting dates in 2010 will be same, on 3rd Thursdays
  • Consent agenda unanimously approved

By Ed Waggener

With the rejection of the Nickel Tax , the Adair County Board of Education is tackling two immediate hurdles:
  1. Reconfiguration of the elementary grades to assure that all students in the each grade are in the same school. (All first graders in CWC, for instance, rather some first graders in CWC, some in ACES)
  2. Completing make-do but critical repairs on Col. Wm. Casey School

Glyn England: One of the best in the state

The just retired custodian made an important difference every single day for the kids at Sparksville Elementary School, just as his counterpart, Mr. Gene Tedder, did at Knifley Grade Center
About: A note on Glyn England retirement from schools

By Alan W. Reed, former principal
Knifley Grade Center

As a long-time principal in this county, I had the pleasure of being a guest in Sparksville Grade Center (Glyn's school) many times over the years. I would always comment to Mr. Billy Rogers, Principal, that he and I were blessed with the best custodians in the state - Glyn England at Sparksville Grade Center and Mr. Gene Tedder, custodian at Knifley Grade Center. Those two took more pride in the appearances of their buildings (both inside and out) than anyone else I ever knew.
