Sad news of the passing of William (Bill) Grover

The story of the tragedy of the death of Mr. William (Bill) Grover of the Anderson Road neighborhood of Greenbriar RD is beginning to reach us.

From the information we have, Mr. Grover died as the result of a heroic effort to rescue his wife, who was stranded in high water.

Friends of the Bill Grover say he exemplified the spirit of Adair County in a wonderful way.

Among his many contributions were several memorable appearances in Folklore of the Old West Bank Robbery pageant as a member of the Green River Cowboys, whose membership, with the death of Mr. Grover, has been dealt a second tragedy in just over four years.

The scant information we have now is that Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements, but details of those arrangements are still being worked out.

Related earlier story: Larry Smith is reporting search for missing South Adair man

Further information, including memorial arrangements and tributes to Mr. Grover will be posted as receved. Comments and further submissions are welcome. Thanks to Barry Jones, Larry Smith, and Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home for contributions to this brief item.

Remembering Doris Beard: She made community better

About: Remembering Doris Cave Beard

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

I have such beautiful memories of Doris Cave Beard. She was an active member of the Extension Homemakers club and Hospital Auxiliary for many years. When ever you needed something done, Doris was always there - a good Christian woman, who loved Columbia/Adair County and was willing to help in numerous ways to make our community a better place to live and call home. She was always so good to me...always had a smile and was my encourager. I loved her so much. Doris was special to me..and I was honored to have her as my true friend. I shall really miss her. Her family has my sympathy.

Common Sense? Why put off gas merger?

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

I don't know all the particulars concerning the transfer of Columbia's water and sewer services to the Adair County Water District but why are we going to go through this process more than once?

If the ACWD is that much better at developing, managing, and maintaining public utilities than the City of Columbia why wait for the natural gas infrastructure to deteriorate to the same high state of disrepair as the water and sewer?

Let's get this all done at the same time. I would think it would cost less to do it all at once.
