Pearl Harbor Day Brings Veterans to Mind

by: Geniece Marcum

Just a glance at the calendar today automatically sends the minds of most Americans back to this same date December 7, 1941: Pearl Harbor, WWII, and the millions of brave young men and women who under the mighty hand of God brought our country through to victory.

Today we pay tribute to a member of that "greatest generation," US Navy Veteran Boatsmans Mate, s/c Robert (Bob) F.Clark, of Glasgow, Kentucky.

Former Michigan residents thinks CWC good, even better than ACES

Finds Adair County school excellent; thinks tax proposal is being rushed. Says, "It is people, not the building, that makes the difference."
About: John Halsey: All for new school but thinks information needed

From Mrs. Kimberly Cohoon and family

I would like to respectfully submit an "outsider looking in" perspective on the entire Colonel William Casey issue. We moved here in June of 2008 from Michigan.

We have two daughters, ages 11 and 6, who are attending Adair County Schools. I also have a daughter age 17 and a son age 16 who are attending school in Michigan, in a large and well-to-do suburb of Grand Rapids to be exact.

Michigan schools pride themselves on being groundbreaking and "state of the art." We were assured by the school system that our girls would be "at least one year ahead" of Adair County's schools when our girls arrived. Imagine our shock when we discovered our girls were a year behind in their educational progress when compared to where your Adair students were at! Your teachers and staff at ACES worked with our older daughter all year, catching her up and exceeding all requirements necessary for her to pass to sixth grade. It was very impressive teamwork.

Writer against school tax proposal

About: Wants list of those who don't want tax

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

Quote: "Regardless of how the tax issue is stated, as I see it, the election comes down to being for or against the children, being for or against education, being for or against progresss in Adair Co. -EW"I can't disagree more. There are two issues combined here:
  1. A tax to build a new school.
  2. A tax on a minority voted in by the majority who will never have to pay a cent.
If everyone wants to feel good about providing a better education for our children then let's have a tax that EVERYONE pays a part of. How about a 1% sales tax in Adair County?

Let's see ya try to get that passed! LOLOL

For all of the rhetoric going around, you're not going to guilt me into feeling bad for voting against an unfair tax.

Thanks for your times/Bill Nobles

Thanks. It is difficult to understand, seeing many of the names on the list we've published, how you can see those for the tax as not having to bear the burden of it. It seems to me that those with some of the very biggest property tax bills are speaking out in favor of the tax. Too, there is no provision in Kentucky statutes for local sales taxes. Hope you'll give the matter more serious thought. With no workable alternative in sight, regardless of how the tax issue is stated, as I see it, the election comes down to being for or against the children, being for or against education, being for or against progress in Adair Co." -EW

Writer leaning to YES, but is still weighing the question

CM received this letter from "JR," with no contact information with some interesting angles on the school tax question:
Personally I will more than likely vote for the tax. I'm still looking at both sides. There is no question that we need a new school and I do not see another way to raise the funds. Unless I see a better solution I will be voting for the tax. However, to be fair, I think only property owners should be allowed to vote. I just do not think it is fair that someone who will not be paying for this school can vote for others to pay for it.
Voting on the Nickel Tax is now being conducted in the Adair County Court Clerk's office on Absentee Voting Machines. The election is Tuesday, December 15, 2009, with polls open from 6am to 6pmCT.

The article has been reprinted following requests from those unable to get one of the copies of the paper

About Colonel William Casey (CWC) and some of its problems: It has the old style windows that tilt out with no insulated glass. The air conditioning units are window units, not central. The building has a flat roof (that was the only way to build 48 years ago), so there is no way to run duct work for a central heat and air unit which would be less expensive. The new high school has a hybrid system - part water source and part geothermal. The new ACES has all geothermal and the new "nickel" school will have a geothermal system as well.

Principal sends personal plea for new Col. Casey school

Dear Editor:
I have written one letter earlier stating the facts and concerns that make a new school to replace Col. Wm. Casey needed. This letter is more about my personal plea to the citizens of our county. I am not a political person and do not have all of the answers regarding the legal ramifications of the additional tax. I know that many have expressed mistrust of those who propose this effort. I truly do not see that. I see a group of men and women who are commissioned to provide the best education possible to the children of our community. I truly feel that this measure is an attempt to do that and nothing more. The funds from this tax have been explained to me and to the public time and time again. The money that we put forward will remain right here in Adair County and benefit our children now and for years to come.

Voting YES. Daughter attended CWC for three years

About: CWC List, Community Working for Children, grows

Ed,

My husband, Tony, and I would like to add our names to the list in support of the nickel tax for the new school. Our daughter attended Col. Wm. Casey for 3 years, and there were lots of days that I would dress her in layers to keep her warm.

We, as parents, support this tax. But, even if we did not have children, we would still vote YES. These people that say, "I don't have kids. Why should I have to pay?", really upset me. It doesn't have to be your child. Just any child. Surely you have family, friends, or neighbors, with small children. So, I along with my husband, as well as lots of other people, urge everyone to vote YES on Dec. 15th. We need to do all that we can for our children. They are our future.

s/Rebecca Beard

We must do what is right for the Kids!!

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

I am so appreciative of the great positive comments in support of the School Tax. I agree with Billy Joe Fudge, We cannot turn back and after reading Doug's Success List we should be more encourage to support the tax that will make a tremendous improvement to our educational facilities.

Folks, this is for the young people in our community and therefore for the future of Columbia-Adair County. We are blessed to be living in an area that has so many successes and we must continue with the positive commitment in the future and that future is our kids and young people.

December 15, 2009, is one of the most important elections we have had in Adair County; please vote "yes" for the school tax.

Doug's List grows: LWC vocal groups, concert band added

About: Doug's List: Reasons for Adair Co. Success

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

I would be remiss if I didn't add the Lindsey Wilson vocal groups, led by Dr Chafin, and the new Band.

s/Charles MillerDoug's List of Reasons for Adair County's Success.

Doug McCammish's starter list:
  • The ACHS Band. Wow! You can't ask for pride and success better than national TV on Thanksgiving.

  • The PRIDE effort and cleaning and keeping clean our city and county. Mr. Sinclair and the support he gets from Judge Melton and Mayor Bell and others is an exceptional asset. Visitors this past weekend commented on how clean the area is - and that's worth money.

  • Lindsey Wilson College athletic success (and national recognition), new buildings, new programs such as nursing, energy technology career academy, and more.

  • ACHS and middle school academic teams in state and national contests.

  • ACHS basketball and other athletic teams in district and state playoffs.

  • Kids (or anyone) who put forth effort to be the best will always get my vote.

  • Added December 7, 2009, by Charles Miller
  • Lindsey Wilson Vocal groups, led by Dr. Chafin, and the new Lindsey Wilson Concert Band, led by Tim Allen
  • Readers are invited to add new items to the list

at Cralle Student Union Building, 420 Spickard DR, Columbia, KY
at 5pmCT, Monday, December 7, 2009

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

As you probably already know, our men's soccer team captured the program's eighth NAIA national title on Saturday in Fresno, CA. Our young men and coaching staff represented Lindsey Wilson incredibly well both on and off the field throughout the week.

The team is scheduled to arrive back to campus between 11 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. CT on Sunday.

Due to finals beginning Monday morning and the late hour of their arrival tonight, we felt that a gathering to welcome home our national champions would be better served to be postponed until Monday, December 7, 2009. So, we will gather in the SUB, at 420 Spickard DR, at 5pmCT on Monday, December to to celebrate their terrific accomplishment.

JIM: Commercialized Christmas lamented, in 1909

By "Jim"

Long before shopping malls, Black Friday, and the advent of a Christmas shopping season that starts in July and ends in June, there was...the commercialized Christmas tree.

Journalist Jacob Riis of Century Magazine didn't like this development, not one bit, and he took a roundhouse right at it in a pithy essay reprinted in the December 29, 1909 Adair County News:
"The Christmas Tree Every time I see a Christmas tree studded with electric lights, garlands of tinsel gold festooning every branch, and hung with the hundred costly knickknacks the storekeepers invent each year 'to make the trade' until the tree itself disappears entirely under its burden, I have a feeling that fraud has been practiced on the kindly spirit of Yule.
"Wax candles are the only real thing for a Christmas tree, candles of wax that mingle their perfume with that the of the burning fire...What if the boughs catch on fire? They [are] watched, and, too many candles are tawdry, anyhow.

"Also, red apples, oranges and old fashioned cornucopias made of colored paper, and made at home, look a hundred times better and fitter in the green; and so do drums and toy trumpets and waldhorns and a rocking horse reigned up in front that need not have cost $40, or anything like it."
Some weeks later, a lengthy article reprinted from an unattributed newspaper appeared in the News under the headline "The Good Old Days." The introductory sentence, "How would you like to return to the "Good Old Days..." led the author into several digs, swipes, snipes, and sneers at modern life before getting around to condemning the commercialization of Christmas, circa 1909:

No children in school, but has vested interest in well-being of community

About: Writer agrees that tax may not be fairest but will vote for kids

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

I'm with Billy Joe on this one. The school is in bad shape, not because of poor care, but because it's simply old. It's possible there are things that could have been done over the long life of the school to extend it's use a few years. But if there were, they were not. Instead of looking at what should have been done we need to look at what should be done now. The issue is to provide a decent, safe facility for our children. I don't have any children in the school system, but I do have a vested interest in the continued well-being of our community.

Writer wants shower of Christmas Cards for Daniel

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

I know that most everyone remembers Daniel Hutcheson. He has recently returned home from Chicago Children's Hospital after yet another surgery. He has now completed his 54th) I think that number is correct.

Daniel really enjoys receiving mail, especially Christmas cards. A few years ago, Westlake Primary Care asked that everyone they knew there, please send him a Christmas card and they did. He still has them on his bedroom wall.

I thought that it would be a great idea if anyone that reads Columbia Magazine would please send a card to Daniel. I mentioned this to his mother at church this morning and she loved the idea. His address is Daniel Hutcheson, 480 Lay Road, Columbia, KY 42728.

Thank you so much!

John Halsey: All for new school, but thinks information needed

Writer thinks stating the tax issue being as being for or against kids is over the line. But we think that is exactly what the issue, this time, is; that this issue is an emotional one. It is purely and simply about Kids. About Columbia kids and Knifley kids. About all the children of Adair County. And it is about education and progress. -CM
About: Wants list of those who don't want tax

Ed,

I feel you've stepped over the line. Those who question the tax are not against children, education, progress or God, Mother and apple pie for that matter.

I for one resent the feeling of being herded into supporting something on the basis of emotional arm twisting and a community led guilt trip.
