(ADV) Person with new job needs a wood stove

This ad just came in:
Needs wood stove: I am in need of a wood stove. I just started a job and don't have enough to buy one. So I'm hoping someone out there has a small used one they don't want anymore. It has to be a small one, since i have so little space to put one. Thank you. Contact me at dragongirlofurs@yahoo.com. I am in the Knifley area.
The ad is in Want to Buy, but how little, if anything, a person with the stove would ask is up to them. During this time of the year, we also welcome Freecycling ads. Freecycling helps the giver, the recipient, and helps the environment, as well. If you have useful items you no longer needed, why not advertise them in Freecycling now. Writer agrees that tax may not be fairest, but will vote for kids

About: Wants list of those who dont want tax

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

I agree with Mr. McKinley that the type tax proposed might not be the fairest tax. I have it up to my eyeballs with taxes just like everyone else. However at this particular time I think the options, if any, are a moot point.

I also agree with you Ed concerning the condition of the school. This school is in really bad condition not because of poor maintenance or neglect. This school like every other flat roof design with which I am familiar is a maintenance nightmare. Every time a leak is stopped it seems that two more will develop.

Also, just drive by and pull up in one of the three parking spaces by the front door and look at the concrete window sills. They are cracking and some even seem ready to fall out from under the windows. Leaks don't just present an inconvenience where one needs to move around the furniture to keep it dry. Any time water gets inside a building it precipitates small changes that heating and cooling will exacerbate and as we can see these small changes become big problems when they continue for years and decades.

Finally presenting arguments concerning fairness and taxes already received by our schools at this late stage is a little like refusing a life preserver to a drowning victim because they should have known better.

During these hard times we should make an investment in our future by voting for our children in this special election.

Wants more pictures of the USS New York

About: Alysha Wilson Greensburg KY

I'd like to see some more photos that Miss Wilson took of the USS New York. Being a Navy veteran, I have an interest in such things. I have been keeping up somewhat on the USS New York, it's a fantastic ship specifically designed to fight terrorism. There are several photos on the internet but I like to see up close shots. I'm sure Miss Wilson was restricted from taking photos at random, but if she has any more I wish she would share them with us.

I have no desire to go to New York, but I wish I had been there for this ship's commision. I also would like to thank all those men and women who serve this great country in our military branches. Keep up the good work and consider a career in the service. I wish I had have looked at it with more consideration.

I would have been retired for more than 8 years now. Thank You.

Wants list of those who don't want tax

About: CWC List Community Working for Children grows

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

Why don't you also start a list of the people who DON'T want the tax. So it doesn't look so bias. That way the election could be done on the magazine site and save the tax payers on the cost of an election. I'm all for education but this is just another unfair tax being levied on top of the ones we already pay. It's unfair because the people who don't own property or a tangable items don't have to pay it. If it was a head tax it would be fair. I still haven't seen anything that shows the actual amount the schools system takes in from all the accessed taxes and funds they receive now. Or why Casey was allowed to get in the bad shape it is now. Seems nobody wants to talk about that.

s/Mitch McKinley

Thanks. First, thanks for the idea that holding the election on CM would save money. The list of those against is public record at the Adair County Clerk's Office. There wasn't a list of those for the tax, earlier. Secondly, the idea you have about the maintenance is an erroneous one shared by far too many. I had wondered about that question, too, until I took a tour of the building. There's not a school in the area better cared for than Col. Wm. Casey. It's as clean and bright as Ricky Bault and his hardworking crew could possibly keep it. But no matter how many times you Simonize your Yugo, it's still a Yugo. It doesn't turn into a Mercedes. The inherent problems in the old building are so costly to change, it's cheaper to build a new school. And far less expensive on Adair County taxpayers. I hope you'll read "Spend a Nickel, Save a Dime," by Ralph Waggener, in It's Just for a Smile News. That editorial explains the dilemma as well as any I've seen. As for actual amount of money taken in from all the assessed taxes, that's public record, and readily available from the school board. Regardless of how the tax issue is stated, as I see it, the election comes down to being for or against the children, being for or against education, being for or against progresss in Adair Co. -EW

Poetry by Robert Stone: Out, a sonnet

Out
A sonnet by Robert Stone
The words I say are not the words you want
so any explanation useless lies
within my womb of worries as a taunt
that stifles coming out as one more wise.

The things I do are not the actions prized
so disapprovals heard and silent stir
within my self that I alone devised
belief that lonely streets I would prefer.

The thoughts I voice are not the help you need
so disillusionment still roams at large
within my web of wonders as a weed
that crowds my hope when I again take charge.

Misshapen shadows unsteadily cast
refuse to join the now forgotten past.
- Robert Stone, 6 December 2009

Tom Chaney No. 232:: Who We Are. Horse Cave, KY

Tom Chaney essay, today, Who We Are: Reflections of Horse Cave, KY about his hometown, Horse Cave, KY
The next earlier Tom Chaney essay is Think Books for Christmas

By Tom Chaney

It is most interesting to sneak about and listen to folks describe Horse Cave. I wonder what Elizabeth Wilson and her family thought when they first came from Virginia to find the massive sinkhole in the middle of their property. Surely nothing in their experience matched it. But we don't know - they didn't leave word.

A Kindred Spirit: Mom's on Facebook and other problems

by Teresa Bell Kindred

The first time (and the second and third) time I heard Anita Renfroe sing what I refer to as The Mom Song, I laughed until I cried. She sings it to the tune of the William Tell Overture and how she has enough air in her to say so much so quickly is beyond me.

Carol Perkins: Hypnotized

Carol Perkins: It was a low-cost effort to travel to Glasgow for group hypnosis therapy to help lose weight. The hypnosis itself almost worked. The weight loss benefit never materialized. WIthin five minutes, she was pulling into the Tastee Freeze on Columbia ST in Glasgow for a hot fudge sundae, without even the resolve to wait to get to Gene's Freeze at home in Edmonton, KY.
The next earlier Carol Perkins story:
On the Pond Bank

By Carol Perkins

I have been hypnotized. The last to believe I could ever go under a spell and lose control of myself, I gamely participated. Needing the comfort of another in case I made a fool of myself, I talked my friend Judy into joining me. I knew some of the others in the room, but none well enough to shake me out of my trance if I started taking off my clothes or barking like a dog. She vowed she would never be able to be hypnotized, so she agreed to supervise.

Chuck Hinman, IJMA No. 083: Long-John Weather In Nebraska

It's Just Me Again: When his mom put her foot down: Long John's would be worn, a teen-age Chuck Hinman took extreme measures to avoid the taunts of other boys at Liberty High School. The story, he says, proves that teen age girls aren't the only fashion weirdoes
The next earlier Chuck Hinman story, accompanied by a Tim Loy travel photo of 'The Sower Atop the Nebraska State Capitol', is at Chuck Hinman IJMA No. 323: Hi! Where Are You From

by Chuck Hinman

These cool mornings we've been having remind me of dreaded winter weather when I was a teen-age boy growing up on a farm in Nebraska. It was dreaded by me for an unusual reason; cold weather was synonymous with "long-john weather."

We're Still Learning What Charles Dickens Taught

ANOTHER ANGLE, the Occasional Musings of a Kentucky pastor: This article was first printed 18 December 2005. It is a timeless commentary, very appropriate for the 2009 season.

By the Rev. Joey N. Welsh
E-Mail: joey_n_welsh@hotmail.com

December 17 marks 166 years since the 1843 publication of the short book A Christmas Carol, by Charles Dickens. Written to make quick money so Dickens could pay off some debts, the story of Ebenezer Scrooge has taken its place as a long-established icon of the Christmas season.

In some ways the story is a traditional personal morality tale about the miserly and bitter Scrooge and his renewal into a generous and jolly soul. The narrative also contains a lot of direct commentary on the priorities of Victorian society and the wide social acceptance of poverty and injustice. (Original illustrations were by John Leech, an artist who earlier had drawn cartoons criticizing artists who ignored the social needs in the world around them.)
