Adair Band in 1968 made up for marching technique with Music

About: Band Commitment to Excellence goes back to 70s

To ColumbiaMagazine.com

Just wanted to add a bit of trivia. I was a member of the first Adair County Band to ever march a field show (we didn't have a football program in 1968) and the only marching competition that year was held at Freedom Hall. We received an "Honorable Mention.Although our marching technique was lacking, we made up for it with our music - Music from The New World Symphony. If I'm not mistaken, my sister Carol was member of the first Adair County Band to win at the state level - not sure what year that was.

Doug's List of Adair Co. Successes: Generous, Compassionate People

Hi Ed,

After this year's huge success with the University of Chicago Department of Neurosurgery Discover Camp being hosted here in Adair County, I have to add to Doug's List:
How very generous and compassionate the people of Adair Co. are.
The people who attended from all over the country are still talking, not about what a good time they had, but how wonderful the people are!!!!

It's just my opinion, but I think those two things are the reason behind the feelings of success and pride in this county.

s/Janet Hutcheson

DOUG'S LIST:
  • The ACHS Band. Wow! You can't ask for pride and success better than national TV on Thanksgiving.
  • The PRIDE effort and cleaning and keeping clean our city and county. Mr. Sinclair and the support he gets from Judge Melton and Mayor Bell and others is an exceptional asset. Visitors this past weekend commented on how clean the area is - and that's worth money.
  • Lindsey Wilson College athletic success (and national recognition), new buildings, new programs such as nursing, energy technology career academy, and more.
  • ACHS and middle school academic teams in state and national contests.
  • ACHS basketball and other athletic teams in district and state playoffs.
  • Kids (or anyone) who put forth effort to be the best will always get my vote.
  • Additions:
  • How very generous and compassionate the people of Adair Co. are. -Janet Hutcheson

Supt. Treece: There was no money to build a bigger ACES

About: Wonders why new school wasn't built bigger

These are certainly good questions and concerns. I think I can address most of them.

While I was not here when the old high school was condemned, it is my understanding that before the building was demolished the Facilities Management Department of the Kentucky Department of Education came and inspected the building. It was their conclusion that structurally the building was still sound and they provided funds to renovate the building for continued use is some capacity.

The same is not the case with Colonel William Casey. The 2007 facilities plan that was developed by the Local Planning Committee in conjunction with an architect and the Division of Facilities Management calls for the demolition of the 1960 portion of the building. This plan was approved by the State Board of Education in June 2007.

Doug McCammish starts Adair Co. Success List

He invites others to add to the list. CM will continue to post the list as acceptable additions are made

By Doug McCammish

Some time ago, a friend here in Adair County commented that there seems to be an attitude of success here now, even though we are in the midst of an "economic downturn"(or whatever the politically correct term is) and he wondered what caused the optimism.

I've given that question a lot of thought and wondered if a list was started, would people add to it?Here's my starter list:

I could add to this list for a week, but I'd rather hear what others have to say. Thanks, -Doug

Joe Hare says with right answers from Board, he'd vote Yes

He's undecided, but wants right answers from Mr. Treece and the Adair County School Board. Wants to know circumstances on how Col. Casey got in the shape it's in; why building a new school is better than remodeling old school; wants to know who will be in charge of the construction of new school

Comment by Joe Hare

I have listened to a lot of pros and cons for the so called "nickel" tax, which is actually closer to 6 cents than it is a nickel. Let me say that I have not committed to anyone as to whether I am for or against this tax. I have been leaning toward being in favor and voting for it, as I have a grandson in school, and I realize the importance of a good education for all children. I know that something has to be done as there are problems at CWC.

With that said, there are some things that cause me to think that it may be better to vote against the tax.

Wonders why new school wasn't built bigger

About: We cannot turn back

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

I am all for my grandchild and nephews and nieces to have a better school and would not mind paying for it. But this is my complaint: When they thought we needed a new high school they started all this about the old one was condemned. Everyone should come out and see how bad of condition it was in. No one should be going to school there....they haven't missed a day having school in that building. They keep saying a nickle tax when actually it is 5.6 which will be a 6 cent tax, and why didn't they build the new elementary school big enough when they were building it?

By Dan White, LWC Assistant Sports Information Director

FRESNO, CA - After a Martin Methodist (Tenn.) College goal slipped by Lindsey Wilson College off a free kick in the first half, the Blue Raiders accepted the challenge to the tune of a 2-0 win on Wednesday in the NAIA National Championship quarterfinals at Ramirez Field.

CWC: We cannot turn back

By Billy Joe Fudge

You know that most reasonable folks who are for the tax would much rather not have even a small increase in their taxes.

At the same time most reasonable folks who are opposed to the tax increase would most likely want their kids, grandkids, etc. to enjoy the benefits of a new facility.

We must by some device not let the "fors" fall over the edge into the "against" category and similarly cause some of the "againsts" to step over into the "for" category.

About half way through his I Have a Dream speech Martin Luther King Jr. said, "As we walk, we must make the pledge that we shall always march ahead. We cannot turn back".

Maybe we need to have a "We cannot turn back" campaign.
