Shamarie Claiborne: Expedition from The Band Nation is in NYC! Report from Lincoln Tunnel By Shamarie Claiborne as dictated to the CM homebase NEW YORK CITY, 3:21pmET, NOV. 25, 2009. - We are in New York City! It's a lot different from The Holler. Just want everybody to know that, while it has been a sometimes wild trip, with lots of things happening, we all all safe, sound, and happy. Monday we were on the busses from 4:30am to 10:30pmCT. There was one hour wait when the windshield wipers on one new coach quit working and the coach had to be switched out. That was near London, and then when we got to Hershey, one of the coaches was side swiped by a vehicle driven by a 92 year old man. None of our crew was injured, but we were sad that the driver was. When we got to Hershey, PA, all ready to fall sound asleep, the rooms on the 3rd floor had not been made up and there was no staff to clean them, so a number of our party had to be moved to another hotel. We got into New York City at about 9am this morning. We've seen Rockefeller Center and Lincoln Tunnel, and tonight, after we check in the hotel, we're coming back out for a night time ferry ride to see the Statue of Liberty from the Hudson River. I hope to be emailing photos, later tonight. -Shamarie 2009-11-24 14:34:27 | Comments | Printable version
Applause for Poe-like poet, Lee Barko About: Poetry Are there any Poe-like poets out there To Lee Barko, via CM: Certainly, Mr. Barko, I am not one of your collagues. I, and propably other ColumbiaMagazine readers, are not blessed with a thought process that conjures up such profound statements as entailed in Please Don't Get Up! Poetry is not one of my favorite literary genres, probably because of the excess of flowery, non-focused, incessant ramblings most poems possess. Your example is not guilty of any of the above, Mr. Barko. Keep up the good work, and I encourage any other Poe-like writers to submit. Question on Ed Baker About: Larry Smith picture from the past Hotel Miller Fire 1972 We received this question this morning: Was the Ed Baker mentioned as the shoeshine man the same Ed Baker who was one of the maintainence men on LWC campus during the 1940's and 1950s? That Ed Baker worked with Ed Cooper and Velvie Vaughn to keep the campus running smoothly.Someone will have to answer who knows more biographical information than we have here at CM. I don't remember Ed Baker working at Lindsey Wilson as a maintenance man. Have any Thanksgiving, Christmas memories to share? Please do Do you have any favorite memories of a Thanksgiving or Christmas holiday from the past? Perhaps it's a story of good times in hard times. Perhaps it's a humorous story about Christmas legends, or learning lessons about greed or Christian sharing, or a special time of sharing, or of a reunion, or a a place or time which always evokes the holidays in your memory. Perhaps it is of a time away from South Central Kentucky, when Christmas was spent in a distant city, on a battleship, on a front. Perhaps it is a treasured family letter from the front. Perhaps it is a family photo, from Thanksgiving or Christmas past. Perhaps it is the story not of enjoying life's bounty, but of the more wonderful memory of sharing life's blessing with people who really needed it. Perhaps its a memory of a Thanksgiving meal which wasn't so grand, but the meaning of the day meant more. It can be long or short. Verse or prose. It can your authorship to top Charles Dickens or Jean Shepherd, or Earl Hamner. It can be from Christmas or Thanksgiving in Adair, Casey, Cumberland, Green, Metcalfe, Russell or Taylor Counties or about times away from the Center of the Universe, when you were away in college or the family had migrated to Chicago, Cincinnati, Columbus or Detroit City, but thoughts were of South Central Kentucky. Jim sends Columbia, KY menu card from 100 years ago today There was quite a feast to be enjoyed right on the Square in Downtown Columbia, KY, on Thanksgiving Day 1909, "Jim" writes in response to Which Restaurants will be open for Thanksgiving Dinner? letter from Charles Marshburn More details about who's open Thanksgiving, who's not, see the "What's Cooking" feature. By "Jim" Had Mr. Marshburn posed his Thanksgiving Dinner query a mere century earlier, the answer would have been easy: the Columbia Hotel, located on the Public Square at Greensburg Street. This announcement appeared on the front page of the Wednesday, November 24, 1909 Adair County News under the heading "Menu Card:" The following will be the menu for Columbia Hotel Thanksgiving: Oyster Soup, Celery Sauce, Roast Turkey with Cranberries, Cream Potatoes, Roast Pig, Nuts, Cheese, Chocolate and Pumpkin Pies. The cost of this cornucopia of culinary delights? Twenty-five cents -- abut six dollars in today's money. For CM readers who may not be quite as long of tooth, gray of hair, or soft of brain as Ye Scribe, the Columbia Hotel opened in 1898 as the Conover Hotel, then operated as the Marcum from 1900 until the middle of 1906. At that time, it became the Columbia Hotel and ran under that name for several years, except during a brief hiatus when it was known as the Hancock, notto be confused with the other Hancock Hotel, the one on Burkeville Street). It later was variously called the Jeffries, Miller, and New Adair Hotel. The hotel stood at what is now The Adair County Annex, 424 Public Square, Columbia, KY. The hotel burned down in 1977. Billy Joe Fudge, inspired by an old photo from the Larry Smith collection, has a memory of the barber shop in that old structure. -EW 2009-11-24 02:20:48 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Food
Old House on Haskinsville RD is special place, writer remembers About: Old House series: Haskinsville RD place photo by Mike Ratliff To ColumbiaMagazine.com: My name is Emily Hitch Fletcher and this is the house where my sister, Libby and my two brothers, Ronnie and Sammy and our mom, Pina Lee Hitch lived in the ealy 50's. The man who owned this house, Bingham Russell, let us live there right after our house had burned. We only lived there for a couple years, but it was such a special place because our family had been divided and this house brought us all together. I have a painting of this house that I had painted 16 years ago, and the house was in a lot better shape than it is now. s/Emily Hitch Fletcher Thanks! We hope to learn more about the house from you, if you'll share your memories and perhaps a photo of the painting. We hope everyone understands that we see magnificent beauty in proper respect paid to these structures. While many of us have souls which don't relate to Mayan or Egyptian ruins, their spirits are warmed by the sight of these half century, 100, and 200 year old buildings, abandoned but holding such great true or imagined stories. Especially at Christmas time. -EW 2009-11-24 01:21:19 | Comments | Printable version
