Columbia Woman's Club supports new building for CWC

President Dottie Julian read it to the women at last nights meeting of the Columbia Woman's Club and the women there voted to put this letter in the two newspaper and also on ColumbiaMagazine.com -Vonnie Kolbenschlag

November 17, 2009

Here's Our Statement of Support

The Columbia Woman's Club, a federated club, is part of a network of women's clubs throughout the United States and Internationally. Together we work on similar projects within our communities. One of our main endeavors is to support education. It is through education that people have gained a higher living standard and learned how to solve problems.

There are many problems to be solved in this world. Chances are the problems will not be solved by people without an education. Children are eager learners, but their minds need resources and a stimulating environment, especially in today's world when new technologies are being developed at a fast pace.

New school buildings can help children learn and help teachers teach. When teachers are so overwhelmed to meet the needs of each child, they need to know there is a supportive community that cares about education. One of those ways is by providing adequate buildings to teach in.

A building that can no longer adequately be used for educating children reflects poorly on the kind of people who live in that community.

Col. William Casey fought in the Revolutionary War that established this country. He and his wife, Jane, established the first permanent settlement in Adair (then part of Green) County. Casey was so adamant about learning, that he hired a teacher to come to his fort to teach. What would he think of a building bearing his name that has become inadequate for educating children?

There are many ways to spend money. This tax for schools is one way - a very beneficial way, we believe.

-Members of the Columbia Woman's Club

CWC: Age of old building makes maintenance too expensive

About: No problem with tax but questions maintenance policy

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

I would like to address the questions concerning maintenance at Colonel William Casey Elementary School. When I came to Adair County in 2003, my first meeting was with the Local Facility Planning Committee that must develop a facility needs plan for the district every 4 years. The architect that reviewed all the facilities for the district gave a detailed list of areas that needed to be replaced or updated. The total cost in 2003 was $7.3M. In 2007, a different architect did not even give a figure but just recommended replacement.

BRBB: Four bears spotted this past week in Adair Co., KY

Lone bear seen in cornfield off KY 704; Momma bear and two cubs seen on Chestnut Flats along Greenbriar Road in Adair County District Three. Eyewitness account reports biggest, darkest bobcat he's ever seen.

By Ed Waggener

Billy Joe Fudge, newly sworn member of the ancient and exalted Blue Ribbon Bear Board assigned to the Greenhills sector and the Adair/Cumberland County frontier, reports two sightings of four bears in Adair County District 3, and Gary Coomer, Dean of the BRBB, was notified today up at the college.

A single bear was seen in the cornfield just south of Chance Road on KY 704 along Crocus Creek. The exact date of this report is not known, nor is the bear's gender know. "Nobody turned the bear up and tickled its stomach," Mr. Fudge said, "so just say 'gender not known,'" but hw said he'd surmise it was a male bear.

CWC: No problem with tax, but questions maintenance policy

About: The difference 21 per person per year can make

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

I fully agree that our children's education should be one of this community's major interest. Although I have no serious problems with the proposed nickel tax one of my great concerns is the allowing of our present structures to become in such disrepair that complete buildings have to be sacrificed. Is this tax just a continuation of the present policies of the board to desire new structures without a plan to maintain them with a budget as is? If so, do we plan on building and tearing down?

LWC Men's Basketball edged by Freed-Hardeman, 68-61

Blue Raiders fight back from 19-point second half deficit, but not fast enough to beat the clock, despite McPherson's 15 point, 5 rebound performance, and freshman Kalen Kimberland's 13 point contribution.

By Dan White, LWC Assistant Sports Information Director

HENDERSON, TN - Despite a 15 point, five-rebound performance from senior Eric McPherson, the Lindsey Wilson College men's basketball team lost to 18th ranked Freed-Hardeman University, 68-61, on Tuesday at the FHU Sports Center.

A barrage of three-point shots from the Lions wasn't the problem, as they finished 2-of-17 from behind the arc, but senior center Zack Frey provided plenty of issues for the Blue Raiders.
