Wonders when picture of Northern Water Snake taken

About: Northern Water Snake by Pen

To ColumbiaMagazine.com

I understand that this snake is far, far away from Columbia. That is very comforting. So I actually smiled when I saw this bright picture. But then, several hours later as I was traipsing through the woods on our farm with my two girls, I stopped dead in my tracks. You see, I had convinced myself that by this time, all snakes were in hibernation and we would not have to worry about coming across one of those critters.

Our walks had changed from the careful, watch-where-your-foot-is slow steps of the summer to the full-speed-ahead go wherever you want abandonment of knowing there are no critters out to get us. So I have a question that must be answered. When was that picture taken?

Poetry by Billy Joe Fudge: The Veteran

THE VETERAN
By Billy Joe Fudge
I'd love to pat you on the back
And shake your precious hand.
I'd love to smile and say thank you
For protecting this land.

I know that most of you are gone
From the big number One,
But you will not be forgotten
For my Dad is your son.

There's not much left 'cept pictures,
Some memories and a spur.
Each memory is safe and sound
And we still call you Sir.

Now to those of you who came home
From a place past the Pearl
And those who off to Europe went-
You both saved the world.

Your hair is now a shinning gray
And some limp upon a cane.
The world must not forget
Your bravery and pain.

Neither will we forget Hawkeye
Nor the war fought on Mash.
The peninsula's still divided, but the
The sorrow's in the past.

We know you endured the winter
And suffered through the heat.
You came home and built this country-
An achievement, a feat.

Of course, to those of you with tattoos,
Ear rings, and pony tails.
To those dressed like the rest of us
And those in tux and tails,

We know that "Nam" was fought and lost,
That's not the point you see,
For dear friend, neighbor and soldier-
You fought instead of me.

And to all of you who were and are
Fighting in the sand,
Thank you for your caring and,
Thank you for your stand.

It would've been easy for ya'
To stay home in the USA,
But you're taking the fight to'm
So they can't take our Rights away.

Thanks. Thanks to you Veterans,
Each and everyone.
Thanks. Thanks for the victories,
That all of you have won.

From Shamarie Claiborne
On the road with the Best Band in the Land

The Adair County Marching Band will be returning home from State Competition at around 1pmCT, today, Sunday, November 8, 2009, according to word received at 11:06amCT, today from Shamarie Claiborne. "We're rolling through E-town right now," she said. "Let everybody know that the band will be arriving a little earlier than we thought."The band won the 3A championship at Brandenburg in the semi-finals, topping cross state rival Bourbon County.

"We really rocked Papa John's Stadium," Shamarie said. "The band put on a nearly perfect performance." But in the evening, by the slimmest of margins, Bourbon County won the top place in the class, with Adair County second. "We're still high from the show our kids put on," Shamarie said. "and we were so happy that Russell County was a winner, too. We' cheered almost as much for them as we did for Adair. They were wonderful."

How We Got Rich in the Country Store Business

When a community loses its school, it hurts. When it loses its store, that's a tragedy. One proud, historic Adair County village is thriving, thanks in no small part to the efforts of one family, who wouldn't stand by when they could step in themselves and save the town's store: the heart of life in the little community of Glensfork, which you may know also as Glens Fork, Glenville, or the popular "Village of Hardscratch." The latter may have just grown to be as well known nationally as Rabbit Hash, Rooster Run, or Gravel Switch, KY, or Lum and Abner's Pine Ridge, AR., which started, in the manner of Hardscratch, under another name. It was originally Waters, AR. The effort has been rewarding. Ken, Vickie, and Jake Hill hope their "blueprint for success" is one others will emulate to help preserve and/or revive the other wonderful villages of Adair County, or use to resuscitate Columbia's Downtown

By Ken Hill
November 3, 2009

Why are all those guys sitting on the front porch of that building? The answer was simple to local Glensfork residents. Their beloved Country Store, meeting place, and social hub was officially closed. Out of habit or some unknown drawing force the men still came. But, the place where many of them grew up, obtained their daily news, developed friendships, and sought shelter from the ever-changing world was no longer welcoming them through the creaky front door. The outside drink machine still dispensed cans of soda, but that too would soon end.

Epicurean Kentuckian: Pizza so good it almost makes me weep

Food critic Tami Wilson, of Columbia, KY, and San Francisco, CA, has recently been checking the restaurant scene in Lexington, KY and files this Sunday morning, 3:05 amCT report on what's she found there:
Happy Sunday! So far, in Lexington, one of my favorite spots is Jalepeno's Mexican food, and another is Ramsey's Diner.

And if anyone has experienced NYC style pizza, or would like to, a hole-in-the-wall joint called "Good Fellas" is so good, I could swear I'm back in New York!!

For what it's worth, it is a hole in the wall. A standing-room-only or take-out place, which serves pizza by the slice. So good it nearly makes me weep.

Happy dining!
Locations of above locations:
  • Jalapeno's Mexican, 1030 S Broadway #1050, Lexington, KY
  • Ramsey's Diner, 4053 Tates Creek Centre DR, Lexington, KY
  • Good Fella's, 110 N Mill ST, Lexington, KY
The locations are for just in case you are as hungry for the pizza as I was at 3:00amCT this morning. I probably won't go today. Monroe County, Monticello, and Hart County are about my outer limits for impulse eating today. Time was, when Charles Kuralt would report on bagels on Reading Road in Cincinnati, we'd take the whole family and go. -EW

Roger Brucker came into the Bookstore on a Sunday afternoon some time back. He told me that he was writing a novel about Stephen Bishop, the slave who was a guide at Mammoth Cave during the first half of the nineteenth century.

He read a chapter or so to me, and I was hooked -- wanting more.

Ladybugs good thing, with high cuteness factor

About: Insects of Kentucky Ladybug and Halftone closeup portrait of a dusty bug, by Pen

BTW, ladybugs are great predatory insects used to control aphids and other insects in organic gardening. Ladybugs.... they-re a GOOD thing - and I agree that they have a high cuteness factor.

Carol Perkins: Deliver the Letter, The Sooner the Better

Remember paper letters which came in envelopes? Carol Perkins does, with a note of sadness for the pleasure reading them still brings.
The next earlier Carol Perkins story: The Fortune Teller

By Carol Perkins

The Edmonton Post Office hasn't always been where it is now, as most aren't. The post office I first remember was in the building on the corner next to the new justice center.

It looked quite differently then. It felt sterile like many government buildings do. I may not have this exactly right, but I think the postal workers stood behind arched windows with bars and along the right wall were post office boxes, like today, only they opened by a combination, not a key. Even as a child when I would "run in to get the mail," I often had to "run back out" to the car and refresh the sequence of the combination from my dad or mom because I had forgotten it by the time I walked up to the tiny window.
