Michael Potter sends a modest proposal for tourism growth "See Colorful Adair County in Pure Black and White," would be slogan if there were white deer, black squirrels imported here, he suggests To ColumbiaMagazine.com: Regarding black squirrels for tourism interest: In Upstate New York, particularly around the old Seneca Army Depot, there is a large population of white deer. They are not albinos. They have dark eyes, hooves, and noses. Google "white deer" to see some of them. If a white deer population, along with black squirrels, were established in Adair County, an interesting promotional tag line might be, "See Colorful Adair County in Pure Black and White." s/Michael Potter Article continues... click title or click here to read whole article. 2009-10-12 12:59:34 | Comments | Printable version
Plaudits and a correction: ATV Helmet Program is awesome About: Safety first To ColumbiaMagazine.com: I needed to edit something here. It wasn t Dennis Loy that was giving out helmets. It was Rick Wilson. I had recently taken my nephew for his driver's test and had that office on my brain. However, it is Rick Wilson who is taking care of this worthy project. This is a great inititiative for ATV safety. Adair County children that are under age 18 and ride an ATV or motorcycle can apply for the free helmets while supplies last.I think it is an awesome way to promote safety and possibly save lives of Adair County's most valuable asset, its children. s/Kelly CrawhornThanks. We've corrected the cutline. -CM 2009-10-12 11:47:53 | Comments | Printable version

Kent, OH, black squirrels content in Kent. Don't wander About: Black squirrels also in Potomac MD Gradyville traveler says To ColumbiaMagazine.com BR>Where I grew up (mostly), Kent, Ohio, there are also black squirrels. But they don't seem to have wandered into neighboring towns. Just in Kent and mostly on the campus at Kent State University. s/George Kolbenschlag Thanks. I do hope the Columbia Rotary Club will take up the cause of bringing us some real black squirrels and white squirrels (not the faux, WKU engineered ones) to Columbia as part of our tourism program. Just a hint, before Charles Marshall and the devious Kiwanians beat you to it.-EW 2009-10-12 11:12:52 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Letters and Reader Feedback

Black squirrels also in Potomac, MD, Gradyville traveler says About: Black Squirrel Ed, I have seen black squirrels like these in the woods in Potomac, MD. The local story is that they were brought from England to Washington, DC about a hundred years ago, and have spread to the Maryland suburbs through the park system. s/Mary Keltner Thanks for the information, though this is yet another wrenching reminder that the raiding trip Cyrus (I believe) wrote about, to remove the statue of Ed Diddle from Bowling Green, KY, and bring it to its rightful place in Gradyville, Adair Co., has never taken place. It had been our hope that on that foray some of the boys would also snare a few of the white squirrels WKU has engineered and bring back to help Columbia with its More Busloads of Canadian Tourist program. We could use some black squirrels here, too.-EW 2009-10-12 09:55:34 | Comments | Printable version

A lonely tree trunk looks like an American Chestnut About: Corn Breakfast A lonely tree trunk To ColumbiaMagazine.com: It is very difficult to tell from a photo, but this lonely tree trunk appears to be the skeletal remains of the "Redwood of the East" American Chestnut. American Chestnut is somewhat unique in that the heartwood rots away before the sapwood. It appears that the interior has rotted away. In the local vernacular I grew up with this lonely tree trunk would have been referred to as an "Old Snag." s/Billy Joe Fudge 2009-10-12 08:36:17 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Letters and Reader Feedback
