Adair Co., KY History:
When the Joppa/Shiloh ghost ran out of his pants

By "Jim"

There was this bizarre tale in the April 8, 1903 issue of the Adair County News:
A real live ghost has took up its abode in the vicinity of Shiloh and has frightened a number of young people out of their wits. The strange part of the affair is that his ghostship receives an occasional visit in the vicinity of Joppa. A short time ago the Joppa ghost while returning home by way of Young's mill stampeded and ran out of his pants and left them hanging on Jake Gabbert's fence. Jake told the News correspondent that he found the pants hanging on his fence but did not say they were the property of a ghost. However, diligent inquiry developed the startling discovery. His ghostship is advised to try a moderate gait in the future or tie his pants on with a log chain.
Considering the date, April 8, 1903, perhaps it was tongue-in-cheek.

More memories of a wonderful Adair Co. teacher: Eula Schuler

About: Letter: Eula Schuler was teacher for about 50 years written by her granddaughter, Kate Schuler

Hi Kate, via ColumbiaMagazine.com:
I knew your grandmother well. Our connections were church, school, and our neighborhood in Louisville. I knew Vaughn and Billy. Billy and I were the same age and in the same class.

When Eula had to retire in Adair Co., she came to Jefferson Co. and taught at Sanders Elementary, where my children went to school. One of them was in her class. (Don't remember which one now.) She lived in the same neighborhood in Pleasure Ridge Park that we did.

Youngs Mill: It was built by the Montgomery brothers

About:Youngs Mill: Samuel Young was the first Young in Adair Co., KY by Carol Reeves Shaul

By Wanda Young Beard

Looks like Carol Reeves Shaul got it right. I wish I had taken pictures years ago when I was there and the mill was still standing. I am still looking for information on old Samuel Young.

I wonder if anybody has a list of the people buried on the Old "Young Plantation," as it was called. I wonder if the Bennett family or the Bryant family or any of the other families that descended from old Samuel have information on him, such as where he came from.

COLUMBIA, KY - After leading 1-0 for nearly 68 minutes, the third ranked Lindsey Wilson College men's soccer team was dealt a late blow by 25th ranked University (Ky.) of the Cumberlands in the 85th minute to seal a 1-1 tie in double overtime Wednesday at Walter S. Reuling Stadium.

Patriot sophomore midfielder Mamadou Camara broke loose down the right side of the field to deliver the late-game heroics for Cumberlands (7-3-1, 1-1-1 MSC). Beating a host of Blue Raider defenders, Camara drilled a laser into the back of the net to knot the score at 1-1.

Kentucky Color: Poison Beauty (Poison Ivy)

Click on headline for story plus photo

By Billy Joe Fudge, President, Homeplace on Green River, Inc.
6048 Old Columbia RD, Campbellsville, KY

Beautiful to look at but better not touch. Poison Ivy is not a true ivy but is a woody stemmed plant which climbs trees, fence posts, etc. much like an ivy. Under certain conditions it will grow up to 4 feet tall, similar to a small bush.

Because it does sometimes grow as a bush it is often referred to as Poison Oak, however Poison Oak only grows west of the Mississippi River.

Poison Sumac grows in the Eastern United States but only grows in swamps.

KY Afield Outdoors: Youth deer season a time for patience

Kids need to be relaxed to be safe and successful. Hand warmers and hot chocolate help on hunts, young expert says

KY Fish & Wildlife story

Frankfort, Ky. - Kentucky's youth-only deer season is coming up October 10-11, 2009. Safety always comes first, but for adult mentors, patience isn't far behind. Hunting for big bucks or to fill the freezer may be an adult hunter's goal, but kids are out there mostly to have fun.

"I would recommend more than anything to make sure the young ones enjoy it," said Will Connelly, a hunter training officer with the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources. "You shouldn't put pressure on them to shoot something."
