R. Hovious says Knifleyan spoken by Archbishop of Canterbury About: Carol Perkins: Right now, in a minute To ColumbiaMagazine.com: Since retiring in Spain some twenty years ago, most of our friends have been Brits. Many of them dispute the allegation that most on that side of the Atlantic speak English. I must admit that during the previous forty years spent travelin' I hadn't heard a lot of Knifleyan spoken In the past thirty days. I have heard two terms I remember being used a lot around there: "Shucks" and "Feelin' Poorly," spoken by, so help me, the Archbishop of Canterbury. Maybe the Brits have it backwards! s/Richard Hovious Knifleyan 2009-10-04 14:32:26 | Comments | Printable version
COF: Directly means as soon as its convenient About: Carol Perkins: Right now, in a minute To ColumbiaMagazine.com: Well, Now! A school marm who taught proper English to young'uns should oughta knowed that "Raht now, in a minute" is first kissing cuzzin to: "Directly." In other words - just as soon as its convenient! But if Miz Perkins thought she had troubles splaining her response to a wee child, then she oughta reflect on the troubles about to befall her if she tried to splain as soon as it's convenient to an inpatient four year old wanting to chill off from the hot sun.Seems like the only proper course woulda been to drop whatever and fill the pool just then. COF at Dun Roman, high on a chillish ridge where its too cool for a pool. 2009-10-04 14:22:41 | Comments | Printable version

I saw the French original in The Bookstore when I was visiting Tom Chaney about three years ago and decided to try my hand at a translation. Kirk McElhearn is a professional French translator and he wrote me back explaining why each and every line of my version was not a "direct" translation of the French and he sent me his version. The original French is last. Article continues... click title or click here to read whole article. 2009-10-04 12:01:47 | Comments | Printable version
Enjoys A Kindred Spirit in ColumbiaMagazine.com Doesn't like changes at Kentucky Living and Southern Living magazines About: Teresa Bell Kindred: A Kindred Spirit, Starry Nights To ColumbiaMagazine.com: I am so happy to see Kindred Spirits author Teresa Bell Kindred on Columbia Magazine. I was upset at Kentucky Living for leaving her out when they updated their magazine. Why can't people leave a good thing alone? Southern Living updated their magazine too and it isn't half as interesting as it once was. The thinkers and movers have to keep changing things. s/Ruth Ann Contact information on file 2009-10-04 09:09:51 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Letters and Reader Feedback
