Carol Perkins: The Harvest

Harvest time is a grand time for many. Carol Perkins has tried her hand making the most of the bounty, but family honors go to her cousin Paula, who is the Queen of Canning, a domestic diva.
The next earlier Carol Perkins story is Worry Wart

The Harvest

For years my mother tried to raise a garden on a plot of land at the edge of a gravel road that led to my great uncle's house (Frank Reece).

Every afternoon she would grab her hoe and walk through the field from our house to the garden.

Letter: Opportunity for Adair Co., KY, with Net Energy Design

Wendy Butler Burt sent the following news release of September 15, 2009, asking, "An opportunity for Adair Co., KY:
KENTUCKY - $10,427,000 awarded:

The State of Kentucky is receiving Recovery Act EECBG funding to improve energy efficiency and promote the use of renewable energy across the state's economic sectors. These projects will lead to substantial energy and cost savings, and create or retain more than 50 jobs statewide. EECBG funding will be administered by Kentucky's Energy and Environment Cabinet, in partnership with the Department of Local Government. Local cities and counties will be selected for energy efficiency or renewable energy project funding through a competitive solicitation.

The state will put funding toward the establishment of the Kentucky Net-Zero Energy Schools Program, which will provide funding to one or more schools to install photovoltaic systems sufficient to bring the schools to net-zero (or near net-zero) energy use. Kentucky will use its remaining EECBG funds to develop an education and training program for local and state building code enforcement officers.
Burt is back, with her husband Bob Burt, to her childhood home country near Inroad, in Southern Adair County. She operates an energy consulting firm, Crocus Mill Associates, from the Adair County. Poetry: Future Memories, by Robert Stone

Future Memories

a sonnet by Robert Stone
Stride forth, O Sun, in golden chariot so bright
while merry piping at the gates of dawn
is stirring present joy for future sight
of this day's past reworked when this today is gone.

Retire, O Sun, in fading hues of dimming light
while pleasant lulling at the doors of dusk
is calming down the overwhelming might
of present cares as grain is gathered from the husk.

Arise, O moon, in garb of changing hue in flight
while wondrous singing on the ways to love
is filling hearts with antidotes to fright
that now below will not be later on above.

Of all these many moments only some
are future memories that wait to come.
-- Robert H. Stone, Sunday, 25 January 2009

A Kindred Spirit: Movie review of Meatballs

Cloudy with a chance of meatballs....not cheesecake (sigh)

The next time it's cloudy outside look up at the sky and try to imagine it raining meatballs. Sounds messy, doesn't it? Normally I love messy. I'm the mom of four boys and believe me, I know messy! But for some reason the falling meatballs in this movie seemed to miss the target. I wanted to like it, I really did. I've been going to Disney movies for years but I just couldn't get into this one.

Rev. Joey N. Welsh annual reprint: Autumn, transitions

ANOTHER ANGLE: The occasional musings of a Kentucky Pastor. This article is an annual reprint, very appropriate to today.

Autumn: Endings, Beginnings, and Transitions

The coming of autumn reminds us again of the transitional quality of existence. No season, no status, no condition is forever. Whether we talk about the calendar or the weather or our own lives, some things are always coming to an end while other things are being born or renewed. In our part of the northern hemisphere fall is the time when the growing season comes to an end and the world seems to die away as winter approaches.

By Ed Waggener

Saturday, September 26, 2009 was a drizzly, dreary day, but it didn't stop the Westlake Health Fair from being a big success.

Firm numbers aren't in yet, but Director of Marketing Pauline Davenport thinks that the overall statistics will be good. "We may not have had as many staying as long as they would have on a pretty day," she said. "But we've been up every year since it started and I'm hoping we will be this year, too."

We Rob Banks

Those of us of a certain age remember Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway as the dashing 1920's desperados Bonnie and Clyde in a 1967 movie by that name. Despite the bloodshed, violence and gore, the movie was fun. We left the theatre siding with the outlaws and despising the cops who brought them ingloriously down with 150 bullets in about sixteen seconds.
