Questions on seeing postcard of old Courthouse

About: Postcard from the Past Old Adair CH before additions

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

Is this the Jamestown ST entrance or Greensburg ST entrance and I know those were not the names of the streets back then? Are they going to remove the paint from the bricks during the restoration? I wonder if the buildings they are building today will last 125 years?

s/Maury Lewis

The photographer is facing Greensburg ST, from the Jamestown ST side. Maybe the answers will come up when the all three Courthouse Preservation committeees report to Adair County Fiscal Court on Tuesday, October 13, 2009. -EW

Upcoming Barnetts Creek homecoming reminds of 1930s one

About: Barnett's Creek UMC Homecoming is October 4 2009
Click on headline for full text of letter plus photo

Ed:

I'm sending a photo of an early Barnett's Creek UM Church Homecoming that was taken (I'm guessing) at about 1930, when "dinner" was served on the ground. My hope is that someone can identify some of the attendees. At the time of this photograph the old log church was still in use.

Two people in the photo that I'm sure of are the lady at the far end of the 'table," with long dress and sun bonnet, who was my great aunt Betty Frances West-Cooper. At right front, the young lady in the white dress is Marjorie Blair, daughter of Virgil and Ida Sapp-Blair. I believe the man to her right is "Obie" Lawrence Rich, and directly behind Marjorie, I believe is Ether Sapp-Rich, wife of Lawrence.

The photo is very dim, but I have had some success with darkening it and manipulating the contrast. The photo is from the collection of Stanley and the late Beulah Blair Rich, of Barnett's Creek. Beulah loaned the picture to my sister JoAnn who forwarded the copy to me some years ago.

Best wishes,
s/Frank Dickerson

Author following fate of Old Courthouse

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

I've been following the story about the possible fate or reuse for the old courthouse. I've only seen pictures of it but it truly is a beautiful old building! I also read in Ruth Paull Burdette's book "Early Columbia" that it was built in 1884, making it 125 years old!

I'm sending along an early photo of the courthouse. Interesting to see that it's all horse and buggy/wagon and, given the activity, it may have been court day.

Sincerely,
s/Paul Saeli
