Day Trip: Turkey Neck Bend Ferry via Burkesville, back by Tompkinsville

Click on headline for story plus 5 photos by Johnnietta Jessie, 2 Frames

Turkey Neck Bend in Monroe County, KY, has the Kentucky's only ferry owned and operated by the Commonwealth of Kentucky, "the Cumberland River Ferry."

"The Turkey Neck Bend Ferry transports an average of 220 vehicles a day across the Cumberland River at KY 214. A new vehicle barge was put into service earlier this month. It substantially outweighed the old barge, and a more powerful replacement for the current, 25-year old tugboat was needed," a recent article from Commonwealth News Center stated.

A stimulus grant of $300,000 announced in July 2009 funded a new tugboat for Turkey Neck Bend; state run ferry offers free crossing for vehicles on KY 214 across the Cumberland River in Monroe County; once privately owned by Cleo Finley, it was purchased by the Commonwealth in 1968 during the Administration of Governor Louie B. Nunn.

The community is approximately 50 miles taking KY 61 from the Adair County Courthouse in Columbia, KY, through Burkesville, and then going south to KY 214 and going west to the ferry. Alternatively, the trip to Turkey Neck Bend through Tompkinsville, KY, then east on KY 214 is about five miles farther.

Plan on three to four hours for a round trip, including a ride across the river on one of the last remaining free-floating ferries, according to information at ky.gov. The ferry, according to the state site, makes several hundred trips across the river each day.

Remembering Jim Giles: As a student at LWC

About: Obituary: Jim Giles, 34

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

Jim was a full time student at Lindsey Wilson College at the time of his death. I actually had the chance to have correspondence with him on Friday, which means more than I could have ever imagined at the time.

I can't get him off my mind. We were texting 30 minutes before his death.

Young Girl Draws Large Crowd - ca 1946

This story was first posted on ColumbiaMagazine.com This story was posted on 2004-01-20 21:09:39
ByCol. Carlis B. Wilson

Outstanding meeting.
In the mid-forties, at the Sparksville Nazarene Church, attendence was small and they had no appointed pastor. However the members of the church invited other ministers and singing groups in for services. One such meeting was with a family from the state of Georgia. The family ministered in song and their four year old, Shirley Temple look-a-like daughter, preach each night for a weeks meeting. The services were well attended, as the word spread, some came to see a four year old girl preach each night.

Carol Perkins: What Page?

'Most of the time, I try to hang out on the same page with others just to get along, but I probably never saw a place for me within the paragraphs. I've lived too long on my own page to try to get on the same page with others.' -Carol Perkins

What Page?

"I don't want to be on your page. We are not on the same page and never will be; not ever." Have you ever wanted to say that after hearing this phrase the hundredth time? Do those words make you want to choke someone? They unravel me and make me shiver.

Chuck Hinman IJM No. 306: Picture It!

A timeless story, as relevant here as in Oklahoma, where Chuck Hinman wrote it, about a phenonemal gift of God, to imagine so vividly even when eyesight, with age, is failing
Next earlier Chuck Hinman story, Depression Days Reader comments to CM are appreciated, as are emails directly to Mr. Hinman at: charles.hinman@sbcglobal.net

by Chuck Hinman

As the days roll by here at Tallgrass Estates, it seems I am fully satisfied spending more and more time in my recliner, not reading or watching TV but just reminiscing the events that come to mind of a long and fulfilled life. I have pictures out my ears but I rarely refer to them. My best reminiscing is done when I have the TV turned off and lean back in my recliner and just let my mind wander through 83 well-lived years. I am constantly reminded of how good God has been to me over the years. My body parts are showing signs of wear but I don't hurt. My mind is debatably sharp so that I could live forever on memories.
