Suggests packaging for Ski shipments to Iraq

About: Reader suggests organizing Ski shipments to Iraq

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

If I might make a suggestion : If you do send Ski, or any other canned soft drink, you might want to put each can in a Ziplock plastic bag. The boxes get bounced around quite a bit between here and there and it only takes one tiny hole in a can to cover the contents of the box.

That can potentially soften the box and possibly cause it to tear. Not only that, but we found out the hard way that humans are not the only creatures fond of Ski. I failed to put a can in a plastic bag and that package arrived in Iraq full of ants!

I found that the sandwich size Zip bags work nicely for this purpose and the Glad brand it just slightly larger, so it's a little easier to get the cans in.

Adair Co., KY should be proud of number serving country

Chris Taylor, Les Cook, and Dan Kermeen among those away
About: Adair Countians in Service

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

Adair County should be very proud that we have so many young people that are serving our country! We should start a mailing list with all the currently enlisted so everyone can send something to them. It won't be long before Thanksgiving and Christmas and it can be very lonely to be away from your family at these times. Packages really do help!

Reader suggests organizing Ski shipments to Iraq

Mr. Waggener,

I noticed the article about Ski being sought after in Iraq. I have sent a few care packages with this in them for my nephews in the past.

I wonder how many of our young heros have no one to send Ski to them?

Ma and Pa Kettle

Lazy, shiftless, and simple-minded, Pa Kettle rocked peacefully on the dilapidated front porch of his Ozark home and smoked a pipe while his robust, boisterous and not much smarter wife, Ma Kettle, tried to shoo the kids from under her feet as she flew out the door with her broom.

Especially my seventeen year old twins who get on my computer and surf the net for hours looking at every truck with big wheels that promises to squirt black billows of pollution in the atmosphere.

This Place Matters suggested project for CM readers

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

I found this interesting: "This Place Matters"

at the National Trust for Historic Preservation website.

Download and print out a sign that reads "This Place Matters", and pose with it in front of a place that matters to you. It seems to be a campaign sponsored by the National Trust for Historic Preservation and flickr.com.

I read about this in "Country Living" magazine (May 2009).

This might be a fun project for CM readers. Just print out the sign (or make a homemade one) and stand in front of a building or site that matters to them...and, of course, send the photo to CM!

Regards,
-Ann Curtis

LWC Women's Soccer drops behind early, loses to Azusa Pacific

By Dan White, Assistant LWC Sports Information Director

After building a 2-0 lead by intermission, fourth ranked Azusa Pacific never looked back, topping the third ranked Lindsey Wilson College women's soccer team 3-1 Saturday in Azusa, CA.

Lindsey Wilson (1-2) got a late goal in the 74th minute from senior defender Yolanda Hamilton who was able to score over sliding Cougar keeper Alexa Douglas. The goal, however, was not enough to overcome Azusa Pacific senior defender Katie Rorabaugh and the rest of the Cougars.

Depression Days

I was a seven year old Nebraska farm boy when the stock market crashed in 1929. It set off the Great Depression that severely disrupted the lives of most every one in the United States. It hit people where it hurt -- in their pocketbooks!

Following the stock market crash, there was widespread closing of banks. People lost all their savings in those banks. The Blue Springs (Nebraska) State Bank where my parents (Arley and Merle Hinman) banked stayed solvent through the depression. The bank was run by Floyd Patton and Arthur Krauss, long-time friends and classmates of my parents. Other banks in Gage County, Nebraska were not so fortunate.

The Epicurean Kentuckian: Real Biscuits
"Real biscuits should be sturdy enough to hold lots of apple butter, and just smaller in diameter than a slice of ripe tomato, and just dry enough to handle the juices from said tomato, which, when paired with a slice of country ham on said biscuit, will become the Most Delicious Sandwich in the Universe," Pen writes.
