Gardening: Alice8 2009 doing bug work at Tucker's Station

Click on headline for story with portrait of Alice8 2009

By Barbara Armitage, President
Adair County Garden Club

I have always named my garden spiders Alice, but as the gardens grew so did the number of Alice's, so this year I have started adding a suffix. Alice1 through Alice6 live in the garden next to the porch and Alice7 lives over by the pond.

Wayne was delighted to find Alice8 this morning while he was cleaning out around the wood pile. It gave him an excuse to call a halt to the days work. We will allow Alice8 to feed this morning on the bugs of her choice and then later tonight before she pulls in her web I will move her to a safer spot.

Reunion today reminds me of music which sticks in my head

A homecoming at Summer Shade, KY and hearing Ralph Rush sing "The Last Mile of the Way," brings back memories of songs which get stuck in my head - from a hymn Momma sang to humorous ditties to a comforting, often repeated performance which says 'Columbia' as much as any other music

Ed Waggener

Some music sticks in your brain, whether you want it to or not.

When I read about the 83rd Branstetter Park Reunion near Summer Shade, set for today, Sunday, August 23, 2009, It took me back to about the 40th one, which I attended as a the editor and reporter for The Edmonton Herald-News, and was fascinated by Ralph Rush's reference to the pavilions as "tabernacles."

How much does customer service matter?

Yesterday I spent an hour cooling my heels at a local business office (which shall remain nameless). The sad thing about the waiting was that I had already been there once, waited around until I couldn't wait any longer and then left. I came back hoping things would be moving more quickly, but they weren't. By the time I finally got what I needed I was more than a tad upset. When it comes to patience with others I do fairly well unless I can see that there isn't any reason for the delay. The only reason they kept me waiting is because they were slower than molasses, slower than the seven year itch, slower than Grandma Moses....well, you get the picture.

Carol Perkins: Shall we gather at the river

Carol Perkins attends baptism on Jack Sparks RD, near the Steel Bridge -or where it was - near Adair County. It brings to mind, for her, baptisms past. For readers, it gives brings to mind how Mark Twain must have anticipated the humor of Carol Perkins when he wrote Huckleberry Finn

Shall We Gather At The River

The last creek baptism I had attended was when I was thirteen and I was the one in the creek. My dad and I were baptized the same day. Deciding to be immersed in murky water while trying to keep my balance on slippery rocks was not without some last minute trepidation. I could have been sprinkled like some of my friends, but I chose to "go under" because my dad did. (I know there are many theories about the difference but I'll leave that one alone.)

Poetry by Robert Stone: A Villanelle for Packrats

A Villanelle for Packrats
It might be handy come some future day
although a likely unmissed absentee.
That's why I never ever throw away.

Now junk that trash observers like to say
and they are deaf to reason when I plea:
It might be handy come some future day.

My own un-understandable array
will surely be a source of needed key.
That's why I never ever throw away.

Deciding which would go and which would stay
would tax my brain unnecessarily.
It might be handy come some future day.

What work may come and who may come to play
could value raise a definite degree.
That's why I never ever throw away.

To all suggested discards I say nay,
for unknown treasure hides in my debris.
It might be handy come some future day.
That's why I never ever throw away.

- Robert H. Stone, 19 August 2009
"Writing villanelles has a fascination and it flared up in me again during a chat with Eoghan Voce Moody," Robert H. Stone comments.

Great Wooded South IV: Buttons

Advent of South Central Kentucky's shirt factories may have given rise to one of mankind's greatest advances when a lady shirt factory professional made a fantastic discovery
The next earlier Great Wooded South is The biggest fish story ever

With all due respect to the research departments at the University of Louisville, the University of Kentucky and other great institutions of higher learning, they just are not on the cutting edge when it comes to "real world phenomenon" research.

Of course, Adair County and all of South Central Kentucky can be proud that the powers that be in the Great Wooded South's research department are on the forefront of "real world phenomenon" research. Folks can lay down at night with confidence that our researchers are working 24, 7 to explain the unexplainable, to expand the boundaries of our understanding of the universe, and to search out answers to questions that have defied explanation by the greatest of minds like Einstein, Newton, and Galileo.

Rev. Joey N. Welsh. Reprint, Aug. 20, 2006. Still learning

ANOTHER ANGLE: the occasional musings of a Kentucky pastor
By The Rev. Joey N. Welsh
joey_e_welsh@hotmail.com

LESSONS FROM FORTY YEARS AGO THAT WE ARE LEARNING STILL
The summer of 2006 marks the anniversary of an important season of prophetic courage in American church history. Few people know the story -- especially around these parts -- but the narrative is worth preserving and passing along. The time was forty years ago, 1966, and the setting was Bells Methodist Church in Camp Springs, MD, near Washington, D. C. That congregation began in the first decade of the 19th century. By 1966 Bells had grown to a membership of 1600. The area around the church in Prince Georges County had changed over the years from rural to suburban, and the historic church grounds and cemetery were hard by Andrews Air Force Base.
