Gov. Beshear appoints nomination commission members

Two from Burkesville, KY, two from Tompkinsville for 40th and 60th Judicial District of Kentucky

Gov. Beshear has appointed the following members to the Judicial Nominating Commission for the 40th Judicial Circuit and the 60th Judicial District of Kentucky.
  • Sherry M. Riddle, of Burkesville, KY is the assistant principal at Cumberland County Middle School. Riddle shall serve for a term expiring January 1, 2010
  • Freddie G. Tooley, of Tompkinsville, KY is a technician with the Kentucky Department of Transportation. Tooley shall serve for a term expiring January 1, 2010
  • Truman J. Morgan, of Burkesville, KY is an insurance agent with Kentucky Farm Bureau. Morgan shall serve for a term expiring January. 1, 2012
  • John D. Walden, of Tompkinsville, KY is a retired teacher. Walden shall serve for a term expiring January 1, 2012

Governor Beshear proclaims Community Gardening Week

FRANKFORT, KY - Joining a national initiative launched by Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack, Gov. Steve Beshear today proclaimed the week of August 23-29 as Community Gardening Week statewide."Public gardens provide a unique way to bring neighbors together, while shedding light on the important issues of sustainability and environmental awareness," said Gov. Beshear. "I am proud to set aside a time to celebrate the fusion of two of Kentucky's most important qualities: our tight-knit communities and our agricultural heritage."

Lowe's offers grants to schools to establish gardens

If the Adair County School System was serious about cutting out the junk food, Lowe's offers grants up to $20,000 for undertaking large gardens in schools. Not only will that generate money for the school, they would have to pay a lot less for the food services if the school system grew their own fruits and vegetables. Also, healthy eating could be taught alongside gardening. Of course, it would be beneficial to give students the option to do the gardening and not just let the FFA-enrolled students do it. As a daughter of an FFA college graduate, I know first hand nothing tastes as good as something that has been grown in your backyard.

Obituary: Ret. Col. Caleb Paige Sullivan, 82 Green Co., KY

He was a veteran of World War and rose through the ranks to the rank of Colonel in the U.S. Army. He was a design engineer for the KY Department of Highways, a member of the VFW and of the American Legion, and was a lifelong farmer. He will be accorded full Military Honors

Ret. Col. Caleb Paige "Pat" Sullivan, Greensburg, KY died Tuesday, August 18, 2009, at Taylor Regional Hospital in Campbellsville, KY.

The funeral services for Ret. Col. Caleb Paige "Pat" Sullivan will be conducted at 10:00amCT, Saturday, August 22, 2009 at the Bethlehem Baptist Church with burial to follow in the Bethlehem Cemetery, Temperance Road, Greensburg, KY with full Military Honors. Visitation is requested from 4 to 9pmCT, Friday, August 21, 2009 at the Cowherd & Parrott Funeral Home, 206 S. Main ST, Greensburg, KY, and after 7am until 9amCT, Saturday, August 22, 2009, and then will be moved to the church for the funeral service.

I appreciate Mary Keltner's article on school food. I expressed this concern at a School Board Meeting approximately four years ago, but they are still serving the same fast foods.

Pickett's Chapel Youth Group will be hosting a meal for a fundraiser at Pickett's Chapel United Methodist Church, 3047 Portland RD, Columbia, KY, in the Portland Community of Adair Co., KY. Adair Countian Jody Richards to receive honorary doctorate

An article in the Western Kentucky University Alumni newsletter online, Jody Richards To Receive Honorary Doctorate on Friday, August 21, 2009, announced that the WKU Board of Regents has approved an honorary doctorate for KY 20th District Representative Jody Richards.

Richards is a graduate of Adair County High School and grew up in Garlin in District 7 of Adair County. He is the son of the late Demaree and Mary Stevenson Richards and was the longest serving Speaker of the Kentucky House of Representatives in the body's history.

Good to have you back, Mary. We need someone to remind us that Pop Tarts are not healthy. Your article caused me to look at the school menu. It's loaded with fat. Surely we can find tasty food that's more healthy and surely we can reduce the fat content.

The irony is every day reduced fat milk is "offered" with the pizza, cheese burgers, mac and cheese and sausage biscuits. I know it's a challenge giving kids something they will eat, but I just believe we could do better.

This is dedicated to all the parents and children who keep me supplied with stories and to my own parents who put up with me even though I may have supplied them with a few stories of their own...

There are heroes among us and it is important that we take a moment from time to time to acknowledge their effort. It is no secret that the United States military men and women are at the top of my list when I think of heroes. However, there are others who serves just as valiantly and often with much less acclaim -- they are young parents.
