Lowe's offers grants to schools to establish gardens About: Praise for Mary Keltner article on school food To ColumbiaMagazine.com: If the Adair County School System was serious about cutting out the junk food, Lowe's offers grants up to $20,000 for undertaking large gardens in schools. Not only will that generate money for the school, they would have to pay a lot less for the food services if the school system grew their own fruits and vegetables. Also, healthy eating could be taught alongside gardening. Of course, it would be beneficial to give students the option to do the gardening and not just let the FFA-enrolled students do it. As a daughter of an FFA college graduate, I know first hand nothing tastes as good as something that has been grown in your backyard. s/Melissa Townsend 2009-08-21 19:40:52 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Food

Agrees with Mary Keltner on food About: Praise for Mary Keltner article on school food I appreciate Mary Keltner's article on school food. I expressed this concern at a School Board Meeting approximately four years ago, but they are still serving the same fast foods. s/Pat Hare Thanks. Your effort to make the food more nutritious and to fit all diets is quite laudable. We hope you never give up on that. Mary Keltner did want us to point out that she is not critical of the School Board, she's just wanting the community to look at ways to make Adair County School foods better than minimum standards and the very best food there is in Adair County. -Ed Waggener 2009-08-21 18:28:18 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Food

Another report due: A followup of the God Bless . . . story About: Melissa Taylor: God bless the parents of young children To ColumbiaMagazine.com: God has blessed me with a wonderful sister that I love very much. She is very talented and caring. She has the ability to write a story that has made me laugh, cry and embarrassed me all at the same time. I know that she thinks it is humorous to use the stories of her niece and nephew to write such a touching article. However, I wanted to add another humorous note: SHE IS KEEPING MY KIDS THIS WEEKEND!!!! I will add my story Monday morning.!!!!! I love you, Melissa!!!! s/LeAnna Bennett 2009-08-21 10:47:22 | Comments | Printable version
Praise for Mary Keltner article on school food Says childhood diabetes and obesity are killing more people in Kentucky than cigarettes About: Community can do better than Warmed Pop Tarts for breakfasts To ColumbiaMagazine.com: Good to have you back, Mary. We need someone to remind us that Pop Tarts are not healthy. Your article caused me to look at the school menu. It's loaded with fat. Surely we can find tasty food that's more healthy and surely we can reduce the fat content. The irony is every day reduced fat milk is "offered" with the pizza, cheese burgers, mac and cheese and sausage biscuits. I know it's a challenge giving kids something they will eat, but I just believe we could do better. Praise for Melissa Taylor essay: God bless the parents... It's her favorite article on ColumbiaMagazine.com in a long time! About: God bless the parents of young children Critique by Kelly Crawhorn I love this article! It is far and away my favorite article I have read on CM in a long time. As a mother of a 5-year-old, first-time, Kindergartener and a 20-month old who has to eat breakfast at school with her sister in the mornings, I have been through many of these things and more that I would be too embarrassed to tell about. Melissa Taylor: God bless the parents of young children 'offer up a little prayer for all the parents of young children. They may never know it, but they can certainly use it!' By Melissa Taylor This is dedicated to all the parents and children who keep me supplied with stories and to my own parents who put up with me even though I may have supplied them with a few stories of their own... There are heroes among us and it is important that we take a moment from time to time to acknowledge their effort. It is no secret that the United States military men and women are at the top of my list when I think of heroes. However, there are others who serves just as valiantly and often with much less acclaim -- they are young parents.
