Carol Perkins: A teacher speaks out on groupings, testing

"A very wise principal once said, 'Thank goodness there wasn't grouping when I was in school because I would surely have been a blackbird.'

For the next earlier Carol Perkins story, click on Put that phone away!

By Carol Sullivan

I am not a brilliant person. One a scale of 1-10 with ten the highest, I am about an eight in most academic areas. I could never quite master algebra, trig, or geometry. Good thing I didn't go into engineering.

However, I thought I was as smart as the smartest in my class except for Conne' DeVore Baker, my close friend and our class Valedictorian, who also tutored half the class toward graduation. The reason I never thought about my intelligence is because none of my teachers made me feel less than bright. I can't say that was true for other students, and I always wondered how they felt.

Poetry by Robert Stone: Through The Day, a sonnet

Through The Day

At dawn unfolding day its promises
holds fast and gently wakes them one by one.
Put forth your wishes, with aplomb it says,
and seize the chance until this day is done.

At noon half-finished day its reckoning
begins and urges slacking workers on.
Renew your efforts, faith is beckoning,
and make your mark before all hope is gone.

At dusk departing day its full review
concludes and lulls to rest the still alive.
Be still and sleep, await the coming cue,
and grasp the opportunity to strive.

Come midnight, put now yesterday aside
and give a good tomorrow for our guide.

-a sonnet by Robert H. Stone -- August 2009

Tom Chaney #217: Book review of Pegasus Descending

Pegasus Descending

If you have been paying attention for the last couple of years, you will have observed that I am wary of the categorization of writers and their work. History leads into fiction. Fiction is transformed into poetry. Mystery becomes adventure which becomes romance which becomes science fiction, and so it goes.

Jennifer Crawhorn: School days, then and now

Grandpa's old stories about school were the same every time, but they were always fascinating. Nanny was so old she didn't even have a car to go to school in? And today? Vacacations a dwindling but the money drain grows as school goes on

By Jennifer Crawhorn

With school starting this week it got me thinking about my grandpa and his school stories.

I remember many stories that my grandpa told during my childhood. But the ones that stand out the most in my memory are the ones of going to school.

It seem like it was the same old story every time, but it still fascinated me every time he told it. It was always miles and miles to school up hill both ways.

Mom's Apron Strings

Whatever happened to the good old days when real "momma mommas" wore aprons? I haven't seen an apron clad woman in years. Are aprons like so many other things obsolete?

A clean apron was about the fifth or sixth piece of clothing attire my mom put on every morning. It stayed on until she went to bed in the evening.
