Comment on the long standing Blair/Stephens debate

Pat Blair About: Great Dogs of Adair Co KYEd, Larry (Blair) and Richard (Stephens) have a long standing debate on which political party runs our country the best. I guess now it has really gone to the dogs! I have seen Jack in action and will have to say he is a pretty smart Democrat. Cute story! -Pat Blair

JRTs, intelligent dogs that they are, need good owners

Peggy Fudge writes about Is Jack Russell Stephens the smartest dog in Adair Co
I really enjoyed reading about Jack. Like most JRTs, he's not just trainable, he's intelligent. I hope people will understand that a thinking dog needs an owner who is willing to spend a lot of time developing that potential, whether it is performing tricks or understanding politics. Richard has obviously put in the effort to bring out the best in Jack. Dogs left to their own devices will, without appropriate training, find something to entertain themselves-digging, barking, roaming, or being destructive. Please know that your dog wants to be with you and have something fun to do. Spending time training him fulfills both, and results in a dog that is pleasant to be around, not to mention politically astute. -Peggy Fudge

Chris Curley going to Braves should inspire local kids

Allen Owens writes concerning: CU Tigers third baseman signs to Atlanta Braves
This should be an inspiration to all Little League baseball players in our area. Just to think that a student at a small university in the South Central Kentucky can make it to the bigs should inspire all of our Little leaguers. Congrats to Chris, I will be rooting for him!! Too bad he did not sign with the Chicago Cubs, but I guess we can't have all the good players. Allen Owens

Is Jack Russell Stephens the smartest dog in Adair Co.?

Richard Stephens thinks so. Thinks Jack could match wits with the any dog and some people
Click on headline for story plus photos

By Ed Waggener

Anyone who knows Richard Stephens knows he doesn't go in for any nonsense. He's that way about work. About education. About his politics, and his dog.

He puts Jack ahead of the likes of Richie Janes border collie, of Tommy Grider's German shepherd with two college degrees, and even the legendary Old Raymond, who used to take calls on the telephone to come and pick up herds of cattle.

Gas Price Drumbeat: Could be a conspiracy, The Hawk says

This road report just in at 9:04 2009-08-06 from 004, The Hawk:
Not only is gas 2.65 North of Cleveland. I actually saw - well my wife, 008, actually saw and if you can't trust your wife, who can you trust? - the price rise .03 _while she was looking at the sign_ at the Flying J in Carrollton, KY.

There may be a conspiracy. There may be sensors in gas retailers signs to detect Adair Countians and raise the prices whenever they're in proximity. The Hawk (code name for CM Special Agent 004)

L.E.A.D. Adair County taking applications for 2009-10 class

By Lee Ann Jessee

L.E.A.D. Adar County is now accepting applications for the 2009-2010 class.

Applications are accepted for individuals 18 and up and there is no limit on class size.

Since the first class graduated from Brushy Fork Institute at Berea College in 2004, 41 Adair Countians have completed the training to become a part of L.E.A.D. Adair County. Ask any one of them about their experience, and, if their's is similar to mine, it was great.

Many graduates will tell you that L.E.A.D. Adair County has even marked a major turning point in their lives. We like to think L.E.A.D. Adair County is making a very positive impact on our community.

To the best of my knowledge, here is the list of LEAD participants beginning with the original Brushy Fork Team:

State mandated new elementary grading system

Patty Jones, Principal, CWC, comments about: tephen Caldwell dislikes new grading system
Please note that the state, not the school district, has made the decision that primary grades (K-3) must use an alternate progress reporting system and may not give traditional "grades." The new system is simply replacing the former progress marking system which was less clear as to a child's true levels of progress. Students in the formative early years of learning are monitored on their levels of progress and development not on a pass/fail level. You can get more information at any of the county's three elementary schools.-Patty Jones, Principal, Col. Wm. Casey Elementary School, 220 Gen. John Adair DR, Columbia, KY

Getting to appreciate new personality of Courthouse

About: Save the Courthouse Tour Stairs and more

    By Billy Joe Fudge

After the trip to the Adair County Courthouse I am even more impressed with its many nuances and magnificent personality.

Yes that is right, personality. That is the one thing we look for in folks with which we are considering developing a relationship, personality. The same with the Adair County Courthouse. In the past we have been forced to visit once in a while to do business, but now we are starting a relationship with this old building because it has personality.

    Events for August 5th

COF writes about the important things in life
Looking over the Events for Wednesday I couldn't help but notice the large banner proclaiming the first day of school. If CM is going to continue to be a vital force in the community you are going to have to reach out to the young folks in the community. What that set is really interested in is when is the last day of school?

Just a little friendly advice from a Crusty Ole Fool who still remembers what the important things in life were 60 or so years ago.
