Stephen Caldwell dislikes new grading system

Says: "Competition builds success. . . Disappointments build character"
Concerning: Adair elementary schools change grading system>Adair elementary schools change grading system

Commentary by Stephen Caldwell

This system seems absolutely crazy to me. As a society, we have taken the competition out of everything for children, out of fear of hurting someones feelings. This includes everything from sports to school grading scales. It has been said that competition breeds success. If you believe this, as I do, we are simply setting all of our youth up to fail by not allowing them to compete, especially in school.

Praise for PLD, Mr. Hood; waiting to see ACHS on streets of NCY

Beverly Merritt writes about: http://www.columbiamagazine.com/index.php?sid=31101>Paul Laurence Dunbar HS band helps ACHS with check

Way to go PLD and Jeff Hood! What a class act you are!! Although we (Adair) compete against you on the field, our mutual love of music and the respect and admiration we have for each other's band transcends competitive rivalry. I am so proud of the Adair County Band and cannot wait to watch "others" watch our little band march down the streets of New York City.

Adair elementary schools change grading system

New grading is E, S, N, and PH; explanation follows

By Phyllis Curry, Adair Co. School District Instructional Supervisor

Today marks the first day of classes for Adair County students.

Though it will be several weeks before progress reports or report cards go home, parents of primary students (early elementary) will notice a different grading scale than the one used in previous years.

The following scale was adopted by the local board and will be used by Col. Wm. Casey Elementary School (CWC), John Adair Intermediate School (JAIS), and Adair County Elementary School (ACES):
  • E-Excellent:Indicates mastery of grade-level content above that normally expected of a student at the same instructional level
  • S-Satisfactory: Indicates mastery of grade-level content normally expected for the student''s instructional level
  • N-Needs improvement: Indicates student does not yet meet expectations for mastery of grade-level in one or more areas, but is working at grade-level
  • PH-Progressing With Help: Indicates student is making progress with help, but not working on grade-level content
The changes have been made to the grading scale in an effort to better report student progress to parents.
