Experience says gas prices higher than 95% of other places

Billy Joe Fudge writes about Wonders if sales tax the reason for gas price differential
I agree with the CM's baseline to this article. There can be no other explanation. The citizens of this community have with the greatest amount of respect and tolerance sought an explanation from local distributors but we have been given the old silent treatment.

After several years of occasionally traveling around the Eastern United States I have, unscientifically of course, personally observed gas prices from here to there and back. I with confidence and quite conservatively estimate that the retail gas prices in Columbia are higher than 95% of the prices I have observed during those travels.

We also have to remember that many metropolitan areas such as Louisville sell only reformulated gasoline which costs as much as 6 cents extra per gallon to manufacture.

I think we all should ask our local officials, legislators and those in the executive branch of government whom we elect to represent our interest to seek answers in our stead. -Billy Joe Fudge

Wonders if sales tax the reason for gas price differential

Bruce David writes concerning Any logical reason for gas price difference
There have been many comments about gas price in Columbia, compared to surrounding communities, but not many logical explanations. Since prices in an unregulated environment are set where supply meets demand, and assuming there is no more demand in Columbia or more supply in Campbellsville, the variance has to be from some other stimulus. Is there a greater Columbia or Adair County gas or sales tax that other communities do not have to pay? -Bruce David
At present, the only sales tax in Kentucky is a uniform state tax of 6%. That's not the reason. Most letters we get lay the differential to greed - arrogant greed - and the unwillingness of the public to fight back. -CM

Doug McCammish wonders why Burkesville gas is cheaper, too

Doug McCammish writes to Mark Hale, via CM, concerning: 20 cent difference 1400 per gas tanker extra profit
Please apply your reasoning and arithmetic to Burkesville gas prices, which are generally about the same as C'ville. Does driving the next 20 miles or so down 61 to Burkesville somehow add time to the trucker's day and put diesel back in the truck's tank? Maybe their gas comes from Tennessee?

Thanks to everyone who is putting a pencil to the problem. When the figures are known, we may find that higher gas prices here are the biggest threat the Adair County economy faces. The question is: What is the community going to do about it? What are individuals going to do? The Adair County Fiscal Court is saving huge dollars with its county owned gas pump. Maybe the independents here can get an alternate source and bring the price down. Please send your suggestions, (without demonizing any parties involved). -EW

Charles Marshburn on gas: One would think Columbia an Island

Charles Marshburn writes about: Comments re article 31063 Says 20 cent difference 1400 per gas tanker extra profit
One would think that Columbia is located on an island! The price of a gallon of gas is higher in Columbia than anywhere between Valdosta, Georgia, and Columbia. Valdosta is at least 500 miles south of "The Island" Does the game "Monopoly" ring any bells?

Says 20 cent difference =$1,400 per gas tanker extra profit!

Mark Hale does the math, and he comes up with an astounding $1,400 plus profit, per tanker, on each load of gas the distributor hauls to Columbia and sells at a 20cent per gallon premium!

About: Any logical reason for gas price difference

By Mark Hale

The gas price situation is only normal for little ol' Columbia.I've heard some of the companies say it cost more to get it here than to C-ville if the gas comes out of Louisville.

Letter: Facing the heat

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

With the August Congressional Break looming nigh have you seen or heard if our U.S. Senator and Representative are going to be holding any Town Hall Meetings near our area. Or, does the D.C. part of Washington now stand for Duck & Cover? I'm sure there are folks who would have a few comments about the recent hi-jinks in Foggy Bottom and would like to hear the reasoning behind some the bills passed and pending. Even tho our two seem to be against some of the worst it would seem fitting to hear from them directly (and not their lackeys) and let them face the music from those of us who put them there.
