God gives us what it takes to make it in this world

About: Happiness on a shoestring

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

I read the story sent in by Jennifer Crawhorn of Russell County. Very touching to say the least. I am glad her son is well and I hope the kids she talked about in her story get well also. She is right about God, family and appreciating what we have. Life is not about keeping up with the people next door or down the street. The fact is that God gives us what it takes to make it in this world. Sometime it seems uphill but it is part of his bigger plan. By following Gods path we will make it everytime even when it seems impossible.

Just thought I would let the people who read about our honey operation here at Kellyville awhile back on the Columbia Magazine, that we now have honey for sell. The supply is very limited this year, so what we have is not going to last very long. We put the sign up down at the road today. Our address is 575 Kellyville Road in Adair County. More Adair Countians in DC Last Week

About: Photo: Metrorail Washington DC

Jennifer Carter writes:
Lovely picture!

We too took a trip to Washington D.C. last week. We rode the Metro and I personally enjoyed the adventure except when we got caught during rush hour one afternoon and stood on the Metro for about 10-15 minutes while the train in front of us had mechanical difficulties. I found the Metro to be cleaner than I had thought it would be and quite exciting.
Jennifer, Thanks for the kind words! You weren't in the Air and Space Museum in a Lindsey Wilson College "Raiders" shirt last week were you? I saw at least one other Adair contingent, but lost them in the crowd. -- Pen

Thanks to ACES school administration and staff!

Great job helping parents save money on school supplies this year

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

Just want the Adair County Elementary School Administration, staff and anyone involved with making the list of school supplies this year to know that it was a job well done.

I heard numerous people complaining about having to buy so much last year and how expensive it was. This was really hard on people with more than one child in school.

I have heard several indvduals talking about the short list for this year and what a difference it makes.

I think that we should thank people who do good like ACES school has done, we tend to complain, but do we let people know when we appreciate what they do?

Thanks again for your kindness.

Asks if Address Markers can be purchased for out of Adair Co.

About: Attractive low cost Address Marker standard

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

I live in Edmonton and have been looking for a similar address marker to buy but no luck. Could I buy one of these although I do not live in Adair County?

s/Charlie Wisdom

The answer is "Yes!" for the Address Marker plates. The answer is, "Not Yet," on the repainted fence posts with holes drilled for Address Markers. Soon, we think, these will be available. The Address Markers are available to anyone, regardless of county of residence, at the Adair County Sheriffs Office, currently in the Adair County Courthouse, 500 Public Square, Columbia, KY, and in a few weeks, in the Adair Annex, 424 Public Square, Columbia, KY.

Memorable Old Columbia, KY: Notes on the alleys and streets

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

Jefferson Alley does not have a sign, but needs one, I think. The originalalley names were of U.S. presidents, except for Pinckney. What is now Reed Street was originally named Pinckney, who it seems was given acclaim along with others in the federal government by the founders of Columbia. They seemed to be aware of the national scene.

Thomas Pinckney, a federal diplomat and statesman from South Carolina, was able to negotiate with Spain, which controlled the Mississippi and port of New Orleans, a treaty guaranteeing navigation on the Mississippi River with access to the port. This was a tremendous economic advantage for Kentucky for trading with the east. The treaty meant products did not need to go overland across mountains, but could go by rivers.

According to Ruth Burdette's booklet, Early Columbia, p. 4, the alleys were only 12 feet wide, the streets leading into the square were 60 feet wide, and the secondary streets were 33 feet wide.

Food: Loves pat-pat-pat sound of papusas being made

About: Beef and Black Bean Pupusas with Yucca Fries

To the Epicurean Kentuckian at CM

Those look so yummy! I love pupusas, and the pat-pat-pat sound of them being made in kitchens. All the ones I've had are Salvadorian- I wonder if/how they differ from American Indian ones. Are these served with curtido (the vinegar-marinated cabbage/carrot/Mexican oregano) slaw-like condiment?

s/Tami Wilson

Great question: we'll post answer as soon as we get them from Pen. In the meantime, comments are welcome. -EW
