By Barbara Armitage

Adair County Garden Club members really grow tomatoes. Dianne Loy has waited patiently for her grown from seed tomato tree to begin producing this year and it looks like her patience paid off. Her very first tomato tipped the scales at a whopping 3 pounds making it by far the largest tomato she has ever grown. She is harvesting seeds this year and has offered to share them her fellow gardeners.

Tony Martens says 100 gallon a year is winemaking limit

About: Wants to know the law on home winemaking

Ed:

You can make 100 gal. a year for your own use. You cannot sell it, but you can give it away to friends or whoever.

s/Tony Martens

Before anybody starts work on a batch of wine, does someone have a link to a KRS on the subject? Know whether a limit may be per person or per household? Wouldn't want anybody to run afoul of the law. -EW

Wet vs. dry: Two sides to small town coin

About: Wet towns not the paradises made out to be

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

Bravo, you put into words exactly my thought and views on this. Why do people move to towns and then start trying to replicate where they just came from? Instead, why not stay where you were at?

My theory is that people move to this area because we have a somewhat lower cost of living in regards to our real estate, etc.<

For change, but not for Columbia being wet

About: Wet towns not the paradises made out to be

To ColumbiaMagazine.com

I agree with you completely. Change is good, if its good change.Booze on the other hand has never been a good thing for anyone. We live in a small town and people do travel to Marion County for booze.

For us to provide and make it convenient for people is just an encouragement to drink more. Our officers do arrest DUI people. They have the privilege of revoking their drivers license. But they can't catch everyone. The old timers in Adair County have never liked the ideal of a wet county. It has been on the ballot before. For those who like wet counties go for it. . . move up the road a few miles and you will be in paradise.

For lots of us, we just love Columbia as it dry.

s/Alice Wheeler

Thanks for your opinion, as always, except for the one argues that anyone who disagrees move. When the next wet/dry election is held, persons with this opinion may find they are in the minority, but that doesn't mean they should have to move, then, either. This is America, after all. -EW

Comment on wet county vs. dry county

20 year resident sees more crime in this dry county than she can remember in the wet county in Illiinois where she lived earlier

By Lorena Martens
You can use my whole name, I am not ashamed of what I have to say

First of all, let me say I love Columbia, Kentucky and I would not want to live anywhere else.

I want to add my 2 cents to the controversy about wet and dry. Peope who want to drink are going to and there is nothing you can do about it.

I have seen some guys around here driving drunk and if they do get arrested nothing is really done about it.

Wet towns not the paradises made out to be

Response to: Thinks a winery in Adair Co KY would be loverly

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

Why do people move into a community and then try to make it like the place they came from. If they don't like the way we live, then go somewhere more to their liking.

I have lived in wet towns and they are not the paradise they are made out to be. We do not need to go wet.

There are many more people who feel as I do.

s/ Please do not publish my name unless you have to

Thanks. Your name need not be published. Your letter makes it across the Civil Discourse standard, though I disagree adamantly that we should tell these well meaning people to move on; we need them, if only for the money they bring - and spend; and some of us find their quare ways funnier than British sitcoms, and a few of them do know how to make real good wine - we hear.

Poetry: A haiku inspired by Jim Hayes' school picture

About: Jim Hayes Concord School photo 1940s

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

I love this photograph. It reminds me of photographs from my own elementary school days in '40s and '50s. I felt inspired to write a haiku:
I won't show my fear
and I will unflinching face
a world I don't know.
- Robert Stone

Robert Stone is well known to ColumbiaMagazine.com readers for his poetry, theatre reviews, and less well known as the editor for Tom Chaney's wonderful stories. He lives in Lebanon, TN. His latest theatre review is on the play, Red, White, and Tuna scheduled this weekend at the Kentucky Repertory Theatre in Horse Cave, KY.

Wants to know the law on home winemaking

About: Home winemaker will share recipes

To ColumbiaMagazine.com

Tony, I am wondering how much wine a person might make in Adair County for personal consumption and stay within the law. I would appreciate sharing winemaking recipes and knowledge of the fruit of the vine. The population hereabouts is moving more and more in the direction of wetting Adair County. Is there a last name, Tony?

Inside City limits, Columbia, KY: Is the water not getting better?

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

Well, I have seen the pictures and heard the stories of the water looking nasty. I was glad that it was not effecting my home. Well guess what. I just ran bath water for two of my children and the water was brown. This is after we fixed my youngest a bottle with, guess what, regular tap water. So what did we just give our daughter? Is the City not doing anything about the water? This is getting pretty bad. I pay the City my money for good quality water and this is what I get? Word of Life tournament winners led by former ACHS stars

By Brandon Thompson

The First Annual Word of Life 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament was held this past Saturday, July 18, 2009, at the Adair County High School Gym. The event, a fundraising opportunity for the Youth Group's upcoming summer youth camp, was a double elimination tournament. Seven teams competed with the winning team of Darren Ballou, Nick Fudge, Jacob Payne, Sean Jackson, and Michael Ussery taking the top spot.

A few commented that it was not only a great chance to raise money for a good cause, but it was also an opportunity to see some of the best basketball talent in the region in action.

The Word of Life Family Church Youth Group would like to thank everyone who helped make this event a success, including those who participated and volunteered, and especially the Adair County High School for the use of their facilities.
