Insects of Kentucky: Hickory Horned Devil, Regal Moth?

2009-07-20 - Photo by Lawrence Hamilton.
Lawrence writes, "My daughter, Kelly, found this creature in our yard and we have a debate on its species. Anyone have an idea?"
Answers:
Sherry Allin writes at 4:50amCT, Tuesday, July 21, 2009, "I'm pretty sure it's a Hickory Horned Devil. It becomes a large with with 12-in wing span." Ed note: See Citheronia regalis Hickory Horned Devil, Regal Moth..
Devin Feese writes at 5:31amCT, Tuesday, July 21, 2009: "I'm no expert, but I think it's probably a Cecropia Moth larva. Looking at the some Google results, the caterpillar is almost identical to caterpillars on several pages identifying them as Cecropia. I found some color variations, but all were fairly close. The Wikipedia page on Hyalophora Cecropia, shows only the early caterpillars, but the moth looks consistent with the other links."

Memories of White Oak school, above Green River

Editorial comment: The White Oak Community was just north of Plum Point Bridge, to the west of present day Knifley Road/KY 551; writer recalls happy time before massive Federal land grab took the area in the 1960s. Should we forget about it? No! It was wrong then and it would be wrong if they try it again. From a Chelf who still misses Old Knifley -Ed Waggener

By Regina Key

I remember the White Oak community.

My grandmother was Dellie Feese Watson and she lived there until about 1962. Hack and Lucy Davis also lived in that community as well as Jim Durrett and family.

I was probably 8 years old when my grandmother moved away as everyone else did because of Green River Lake and the dam.

Orphan puppies: It's pitiful that people can be so mean

About: Orphan puppies, dropoffs along roadside, needing homes by Jason Harmon

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

Why do people do such mean things? We have twp orphans that were dropped off in our neighborhood, too. We took them in, and I'm sure we will keep them. If people would spay and neuter their pets, or not get any in the first place, maybe this wouldnt happen so much! It's pitiful that people can be so mean.

Thanks to Columbia/Adair County Jaycees!

From Doyle Lloyd, President, Adair County High School Band Boosters

The Adair County Band & Tom Case would like to thank the Columbia/Adair County Jaycees for their overwhelmingly generous donation to the Macy's fund. The Jaycees donated the concessions stands at this year's Adair County Jaycees Fair to our boosters. We're truly grateful the Jaycees gave us this opportunity. This helps puts us closer to our goal to get the Adair County Band to New York City to perform in the 2009 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. A big thanks also goes out to members of the community that attended the fair and supported the concession stands.

Site news: A look at obituary policy on ColumbiaMagazine.com

The names of the pallbearers for the funeral of Kathy Maxey Bailey have been added, thanks to Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home.Names of pallbearers are often not available when funeral arrangements are first announced. We appreciate the opportunity to add this important element to the obituary, and very much appreciate the extra efforts of funeral home directors in adding it later. There have been a number of changes to the obituary protocol in the last few weeks.

By Ed Waggener

10 things we want you to know about CM obituaries

ColumbiaMagazine.com's somewhat retro style of delivery of more comprehensive obituaries and tributes is perhaps the most distinctive element of this magazine. We know obituaries are important historical documents. We know people care.

There was little comment at first, but the realization of the importance our people put on them was brought home when a reader said that, in a job interview, she was asked what type an employee she would make. "I answered," she said, "that when I die I want it to say on ColumbiaMagazine.com, 'She was the best (...) Adair County ever had.' "

We knew, then, that the extra effort was worth it. We knew it when historians told us they found that ColumbiaMagazine.com obituaries, with the links and the added information, the attention to addresses, helped them today and would be of value in the future.

Speeding, 100 block, Jamestown ST, Columbia, KY

To ColumbiaMagazine.com

Wayne and I just stopped in at the Dairy Dip for an ice cream - since the evening was so nice we thought that we would sit at the picnic table and enjoy a peaceful Sunday dessert. Do you think that we could talk someone into loaning us a radar gun for a day? I would love to see just how fast those cars are zipping through downtown. Where are our city police?

. s/Barbara Armitage

Comment: Thanks. Don't know if we ought to lay this all at the feet of the police. They seem to carry out enforcement of laws citizens bring to their attention, particularly when done so at public meetings.. But you are right about the problem. The speed of traffic coming off the Square onto Jamestown Street is dangerous. Many believe the first step to reviving downtown is to set priorities, and the first priority would be to make it safe for people, for pedestrians. Many believe the courthouse cannot survive and thrive unless safe easy access is established. -EW

About: Preservation, Paul Corbin, and old, old Knifley schoo,l White Oak

To ColumbiaMagazine.com

Yes, I do remember the White Oak one room school. My Aunt Irene Hutcherson taught there when I was about four years old. She would take me with her occasionally. My father, Presley Chelf, taught at Robinsion Ridge one room school and the old Knifley school with Mr. Corbin and the new school, also and was the coach. Lots of good times back then.
