Poetry: Three Haiku From A Hospital Stay

by Robert Stone

Peace is a mirror
in which we each see those things
we want to avoid.

- Sunday, 10 July 2005

Ancient kings wanted
the best things for the best death --
now we all want them.

- Monday, 11 July 2005 (remember the advertising sloan Better things for better) living)

Reverence for life
wastes our energies without
reverence for death.

- Monday, 11 July 2005

I wrote these at Centennial Medical Center where I was reading A Terrible Love of War after colon surgery. -Robert Stone

Paul Corbin was George Strait 40 years to soon

About: Preservation, Paul Corbin, and old, old Knifley school, White Oak

To Judy Corbin, via CM

Please pass along our best to Paul Corbin;s daughter. I would be happy to contribute to any effort re the old,old school in Knifley. Spent a good deal of my early life there. Paul was one of my favorite people; he was just back from WWII when I left Knifley and I remember well the "Pickin' and Grinnin'" sessions he and Leon Christie would hold in Leon's store. I once told someone that Paul was George Strait forty years too soon. Incidentially, my family, Bob, Doug and Judy, still live in Bowling Green. Best.

Carol Perkins: Potlucks

Last Sunday was a bleak one in CM, with no Carol Perkins story. This one more than makes up for it: A treatise on the potluck history and culture. -Ed

By Carol Perkins

Potlucks

Men created potlucks. I am sure of it. Most likely Daniel Boone told Becky that he would kill a bear and she could cook it and invite all the neighbors over to eat.

"But Daniel, do you realize how much work that will be for me?"

"Oh, just tell the other women to bring a dish."

Male High Cross Country star signs with CU

Natasha Janes will join CU track, basketball teams
Ciick on headline for story plus photo

From Campbellsville University Sports Information Department

CU Cross Country coach Scott Hortness has signed Male (Louisville) High graduate Natasha Janes to join the Lady Tiger harriers in the fall. She will also run track in the spring and join Ginger Colvin's Lady Tiger basketball team once the cross country season is complete.

Janes, who was injured in a car accident during the 2008 high school cross country season, is a "great addition," according to Hortness.

After a grueling rehab from the auto accident, Janes was able to rejoin the Male basketball team and in the spring her 4x800 relay team finished second in the Class AAA Kentucky State Track Meet with a time of 9:42.29. She also ran the 1,600-meter, posting a time of 5:59.75.

During her high school career, Janes earned 14 varsity letters in her three sports and was voted Most Athletic Female of her graduating class.

"She is a very determined individual who has overcome some setbacks," said Hortness. "Natasha will do very well in whatever she decides to do."

Janes had perfect attendance for her 12 years of school so far, even though rehabilitation sometimes took 4-6 hours a day. - Richard RoBards

Ice Cold Thriller

Every now and again I run across a book by an author with whom I was once familiar, and whom I liked once, but neglected, only to find he is now dead.

Such effrontery for a man to shuffle off his mortal coil (Shakespeare, by the way) 'ere I am finished with him.

Rev. Joey N. Welsh. George Bernard Shaw

ANOTHER ANGLE: the occasional musings of a Kentucky pastor
SEASON AFTER SEASON. Reprinted from earlier CM post on July 23, 2006.
By The Rev. Joey N. Welsh
joey_n_welsh@hotmail.com

The writer of Ecclesiastes begins chapter three with the familiar words, "To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under heaven." (KJV). I thought of those words for this week's column, because for longer than a century the plays of George Bernard Shaw have been coming to life on stage. And since the time that Shaw began writing his plays, there has hardly been a season of any year without someone somewhere putting on a Shaw play.

Preservation, Paul Corbin and old-old Knifley school, White Oak

About: Is there any Adair Co organization preserving historic schools

To ColumbiaMagazine.com

My father, Paul Corbin, taught at the old/old (as vs. the now old, Knifley Grade Center circa 1961) school in Knifley. I know we have some photos of the old school from the 1950s. My sister, Brenda painted a picture of the school which hangs in their house. It later became a cherry furniture factory. My parents bought all their bedroom and living room furniture there. My father is still with us at 83 and lives here in Bowling Green. My father also taught at a school called "White Oak." I think this was a one room school, but I am not sure exactly where it was in Adair County.

Amen for Jennifer Redford stand

About: We should treat our town with same respect we give our homes

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

We should treat the entire world with the same respect we give our homes. Driving down the roads with all the garbage people toss makes me want to cry. My husband picks up trash where our road begins because he hates to tell people "you turn where all the garbage is..."

Have a wonderful day.

Granny's Canned Beets, and the wisdom that came with them

Her name was Edith, but to a small child she was 'Granny Pudding.' Her name fit her well. She was a wonderful woman, who could impart life's lessons in such a sweet way learned by a little girl 'helping' her can beets

My fondest memories of my childhood were the smells coming from Granny's kitchen. She was the best cook in the world, and I mean no offense to my Mom.

She was always someone I looked up to when I was growing up.

It's a Jungle Out There

Most people where I grew up in Gage County Nebraska would be utterly amazed if they had night vision and could see the menagerie of wild life they share their world with.

Many "thingies" live underground and only venture above ground at night; many live in or near water and shy away from the rest of us "normal creatures."
