The Adair County 9/10 All Stars have a chance to redeem themselves tonight, Monday, July 13, 2009, at 5:00pmCT against the 3-1 team from Campbellsville when they face each other in a rematch at City Park in Campbellsville in the first game of the District 5 championship series.

By Greg Scott

The Adair County 9/10 All Stars were handed their first defeat on Saturday afternoon by the team from Campbellsville in a mercy rule shortened score of 16-6 after five. The loss breaks the Adair winning streak and puts the team at 3-1 in the preliminary round of play leading into the playoffs this week.

The visiting team from Adair led off the first inning with one run when Miller Young reached on an error, stole second base and was driven in by a double to right center field off the bat of Brett Burton. But two ground outs to the second baseman and a strikeout held Adair to just one run in the inning.

First Book makes difference right here in SC Kentucky

Remember last August when Barbara Armitage wrote the letter urging more ColumbiaMagazine.com readers to vote each day for Kentucky to win the First Book 50,000 free books contest, and you responded to put Kentucky over the top with her's and CM's daily reminder during the clickstorm period? And Kentucky won? Well, here's a case for the effort has paid off with real dividends, right in our own neighborhood, in Metcalfe County, KY -EW

By Camilla Shive

Ive witnessed many success stories throughout my career but the one I am about to share with you is by far the most powerful

Imagine living in poverty with an uneducated mother whose only income is the money she receives from the government to put food on the table for her children. Now, imagine growing up in this environment as a non-verbal three-year-old, deprived of attention, cultural activities and books that would allow him to grow, learn and mature. This was Jacob's life until Thomas & Friends arrived from First Book.

Really enjoyed the Adair County Fair this year!

About: Admission policy letter

To ColumbiaMagazine.com

I really enjoyed the fair this year also. However, it was very expensive for my family of five. For 2010, I would like to suggest selling advance tickets at a cheaper rate the first week in June to Adair residents only. Many theme parks provide package deals, maybe the Adair County Fair could have them too. Any price reduction would certainly be an asset for young families.

The writer, Rob Stout, is a frequent contributor to Columbia-Magazine.com. An editorial about a disastrous fire in St. Johnsbury, VT, and thought it was worth sharing

Dear Friends,

So many items forwarded to me either are ridiculously silly or even hateful, vicious and lacking in civility. I don't forward a lot of things. Occasionally I come across something that I see as valuable. The following link is an editorial in Caledonian-Record, July 11, 2009. comment from the St. Johnsbury, VT, Caledonian-Record from July 11. I read portions of it during the Sunday morning worship service here, and I think that the thoughts expressed therein are worth sharing.

RECEIPT FOR FRIED CHICKEN: Step aside, Col. Harland Sanders

About: Note on chicken gizzards from Ruth Weldon Bartlesville OK
Anyone who ever ate Tom Chaney's Fried Chicken when The Bookstore in Horse Cave, KY, was also the region's finest restaurant, knew this man had a religious fervor about the After Sunday Sermon with 23 Stanzas of Just As I Am National Food of Southern Baptists. He has sent the Epicurean Kentuckian a Revelation on the Preparation of Fried Chicken and the scripturally Mandatory Accompanianments. His "RECEIPT FOR FRIED CHICKEN" is of such urgent importance it cannot wait til next Sunday. It came with this message, "Ed, Like the camel looking for just a little hole to get his nose in the tent, I am taking this opportunity to share my receipt for fried chicken. Every time I have tried to cut it, the receipt ends up longer. I finally gave up, needing space in the computer for other matters. Feel free to use this or not as you wish. If you do use it, I suggest you attach yourn and mine phone numbers to be called upon completion. If necessary, I can furnish my own napkin. Best wishes, -Tom Chaney. Carefully followng his instructions, the receipt follows, with both the phone numbers which are hisn and the one of mine. -Ed

RECEIPT FOR FRIED CHICKEN: Step aside, Col. Harland Sanders

by Tom Chaney

A trip around the country by train in the fall of 1986 turned into an odyssey of fried chicken.

At Joe and Cindy Graber's house in Louisiana, I got hungry for my own fried chicken and fixed it one evening.

When I arrived in Los Angeles I acceded to a request to fry chicken for Willis Popenoe in memory of our graduate school days in Kentucky. He asked for the receipt, and I wrote it out. It took some three pages.
