Epicurean Kentuckian: Right of way blackberries

2009-07-11 - Bryan, Russell Co. KY - Photo by Linda Waggener.
The time of the year, South Central Kentucky is a movable feast. The dessert is often free, with right of way blackberries ripening and going to waste is some hungry passerby does pick them and have them for dessert. These inviting berries were growing near the Crocus Bridge in Russell County between the Village of Crocus, Adair County, and Bryan on the way to Creelsboro, KY. These were just asking to be picked and et, before a bird or bear got them, on Saturday, July 11, 2009.

Jeffries Hardware donates tools to AC Garden Club

Leon Lewis' Jeffries Hardware, 704 Jamestown ST, Columbia, KY store's donation helps Adair County Garden Club to maintain gardens in Downtown Columbia, at Trabue House, and at the Adair County Library. You can help, too, by donating tools and supplies or by volunteering for the Thursday morning community work sessions

By Barbara Armitage

About the last thing I did last night was to send an impassioned plea to Columbia Magazine on behalf of the Adair County Garden Club. Members of the ACGC have been struggling to make ends meet and their need for garden tools had become desperate.

The response was immediate. Within hours of posting our request I received a call from Jeffries Hardware offering to help out by donating a new rake, hoe and shovel to the ACGC - we couldn't be happier.

Yard sale host perplexed by failure of $150 rickshaw to sell

ColumbiaMagazine.com has received a letter of concern from a puzzled yard sale host: "So far the yard sale has been a huge success. We always ask our customers where they heard about us and almost everyone told us that they check CM for a list of yard sales," writes Barbara Armitage about the following yard sale now posted in CM:
Friday and Saturday, July 10 and 11, 2009, 6:00am - 3:00pmCT. 1535 Bull Run RD,Columbia, KY.1.5 miles from Hwy 206. Call (270) 250-2979 for directions or information. We may not have the kitchen sink for sale but we have a bathroom sink! Lots of unique items and great stuff that you need. One of a kind Chinese Rickshaw, small chest freezer, fishing equipment, 4 ft. jeweled Dungeons and Dragons sword with wall plaque, lots of Dragon and Wizard items, like new recliner, porch rockers, new Coleman tent from Marlboro, men's name brand clothing size 32-34, women's plus size clothing, VHS movies, double French exterior door, 6-10 foot trees starting at $5.00, banana trees, antique Queen Ann chairs, corner - garden bath tub, lots of knick-knacks and just plain stuff. Every thing must go so it's priced low! PS: ED: Wayne says that I have to make enough money on this yard sale to finance my next remodel on the house. I have my heart set on getting a pantry so I'm dragging everything he owns to the sale. -BARBARA ARMITAGE
She adds: " I don't understand it but the rickshaw ($150) hasn't sold yet. Every man who has been here has suggested that his wife buy it and then pull him around town - that might be the reason it hasn't' sold!"
