Evan at Six: The man and his style

2009-07-08 - Around Kentucky - Photo by Pen. Evan is six. A man of the world. A coming star, his Mema and I know, for Southside Elementary, where an all new principal will face him this year. He's announced he is going to Washington, DC, and wanted to know if I had been there. "In the 1950's, I think," I told him. "Barack Obama wasn't President, then, was he?" he asked. Evan's birthday celebration in Columbia was accompanied by a bouncing game which required disassembly and elaborate re-arrangement of a day bed. He was, he announced, "Conducting a jumping clinic." At left, he was in his rock star mode eating an ice cream sandwich. At right - we had always underestimated his skills as a clothing coordinator - he had dressed himself. He was asked what he like best about the subdued ensemble, and he said, "The long socks. They are are just like Papaw's." We think he was talking about the length, not the somber color. We're sure hosiery fashion is more festive in Flatwoods, Greenup Co., KY, where his other grandparents, the ones he's pulled the wool over their eyes and the ones can manipulate into being his wait staff, live. LInda and I are on to this guy. -ED WAGGENER, Evan's Stern, Military Discipline, Granddad

Remembers reluctance to put light at old Walmart

About: Seventh Crash at The Crossing since CWB opened

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

It is a shame that the state does not see that there is a need for a stop light here. The new LED lights obviously are not working here. When Wal-mart opened on Jamestown ST and Houchens was across the street, at first they did not put anything at the intersection. Then stop signs were put up coming out of Wal-mart & Hurt ST.There were still numerous accidents.

About two weeks after my mom and I had a wreck at this intersection, they decided to put up a traffic light.

Now this new intersection is having the same problems and someone is again delaying the inevitable. I have heard that big wheels turn slow, but how many people have to be hurt before the powers that be do something or a solution is found?

Thanks for info you can give me. Also, I am going to post a picture I took this morning of a close up that I got.

Another crash at The Crossing: 7th since CWB opened

There's been another crash on the Columbia Western Bypass, again at The Crossing with Greensburg ST/Greensburg Road.

More details will be coming later. Chief Mark Harris and members of the Columbia Police Department were on the scene this morning. He said that full details will be released shortly to local media.

"One thing I do see," Chief Harris said, "there is a definite pattern in the problem. Most of the accidents involve northbound Bypass drivers and drivers headed south on The Dogleg who fail to see the intersection. Maybe the state can find a way to close off the dogleg to southbound traffic. Maybe that would solve the problem."

Report on number of holes in Great Wall may be out today

Thanks to all those who readers with real regard for preserving important historical data and have taken the time to count the number of pigeonholes in the Great Wall of Columbia, KY. We now have moderate consensus on the precise number, but not enough agreement to satisfy the high metric standards of the BBC, ColumbiaMagazine.com, Scientific American, or the World Record Book of Guinesses.

We were hoping for the certainty of the Septuagint, with everybody coming up with the same number. With one errant number, however, we'll never be able to claim divinity for the count. Counts will be accepted until 12 noonCT, Wednesday, prayer meeting day, July 8, 2009, at which time the First Report will be issued.

ColumbiaMagazine.com will accept as historical fact whatever Columbia Mayor Pat Bell and City of Columbia Events Planner Rhonda Loy decree, by municipal fiat, the GWCK Whole Number is. -EW
