Is there a plan written to bring jobs to Columbia? Are the citizens of Columbia allowed to know what is included in the plan? What priority does this plan have?

Wants her little town to be picture perfect

About: Scenic AdairCo., KY: The Courthouse at night

To Pen at ColumbiaMagazine.com

Pen, I love your photos -- all of them! I can usually tell which ones areyours immediately; they just have a certain look.

Regarding the Square: I wish the "community events" signs that are oftenposted in front of the Courthouse would disappear. You know, the "Revivalat (. . .) " ones, etc. Also, I'd like to see go away the marquee thatblocks the neon "Columbian" sign.

I want my little town to be picture perfect.

Best Regards,
s/Ann
(Name and contact information on file)

Thanks, Ann! I'm glad you like the photos, and feel the same way about the marquee. It's nearly as iconic as the courthouse for downtown Columbia, and I'd love to be able to photograph it without the sign. I think a sandwich board on the sidewalk might be just as effective for advertising what's playing when the theater is running. Plus, when I lived on Marshall Street, I usually went to the Columbian regardless of what was playing because it was so nice to be able to walk to the movies.

I'm not so sure I agree about the other advertisements, though. Sometimes details like that are the very things that make photos interesting 10 or 20 years down the road, and I think it's great that the center of town is still a place that you know everyone will see such a sign and know about important local events. -PW

Reader agrees that jobs are priority

About: Comments re article 30531 Writer thinks creation of jobs should be highest priorityAllen Owens writes:
I agree with creating jobs should be the most important priority because if no one has a job, then it will be useless to have shops, because if people are broke they cannot afford to buy anything or support these shops!

It is a great story to tell the people how wonderful the future of the square is going to be, but without the financial backing it is just a pipe dream!

What are YOU willing to do for YOUR future? To create something wonderful you have to be willing to work hard and also be willing to support the businesses that are going to inhabit these buildings.

Carol Perkins: Grandparents' Camp

"Watching the cousins discover each other was worth a winning lottery ticket," Carol Perkins writes of the house full of fun when four grandchildren visited the Perkins home at one time

"Grandparents' Camp"

I was gone one hour. Sixty minutes. That's all. In that time I had my hair fixed and went to the grocery to buy food for supper. When I got home, you would have thought I had been gone all day.

"Don't you ever leave me alone with them again. I can't handle it. I admit it. They were all over the place," Guy said pitifully as he met me at the door shaking his head.

Haiku written May and June 2009 by Robert Stone

Dear Reader,

It's been two months since I posted my haiku. Here are the recent ones. All of them were written as comments on comments or on status notes or on photographs or on blog posts or in responses to emails. If you are really curious as to what caused me to write one of these, send me a note and I'll let you know.

Of Writers And Their Books, Sunday, 05 July 2009: Tom Chaney #212, The Mansion Next previous Tom Chaney book review The Mansion by William Faulkner

By Tom Chaney
bookstore@scrtc.com

Not as seen by God looking down

Were it not for the Civil War neither the South nor the nation at large would have so rich a literature. According to William Faulkner the pivotal point in southern history was July 3, 1863 at Gettysburg just before Pickett's fatal charge with hope not yet dashed -- all yet possible.

Rev. Joey N. Welsh. July 5, 2009. Consider lowly wolf peach

ANOTHER ANGLE: the occasional musings of a Kentucky pastor

Is an opinion right just because it is popular?
Consider the lowly wolf peach

By The Rev. Joey N. Welsh
joey_e_welsh@hotmail.com

(Reprinted from The Hart County News-Herald, July 31, 2005; reposted from ColumbiaMagazine.com, July 9, 2006)

Every time I hear people say that a dissenting outlook on an issue should be stamped out because it's not a particularly popular opinion at the moment, I remember the strange history of the wolf peach. A relative of the poisonous nightshade plant, the wolf peach was native to Central and South America.

The next earlier Chuck Hinman story is Mom's Birthmark Reader comments to CM are appreciated, as are emails directly to Mr. Hinman at: charles.hinman@sbcglobal.net

by Chuck Hinman

I grew up on a farm in southeast Nebraska, Gage County to be exact. Our house was a large two-story bungalow-style structure with a front porch that wrapped around the front and east side of the house. The house was replete with porches and entry-ways.

You could come in the back door through the combination entrance, the stairway of which led to the basement or to the vestibule adjacent to the kitchen. There was a kitchen porch, a dining room porch, and the huge front porch as well.

Lindsey Wilson Bell was gift of builder in 1904

About: "Remembering the Bell at the LWC Administration Bldg" a comment on a photo hanging in Joe L. Barbee's Gallery of History at his barbecue restaurant at 824 Campellsville RD, Columbia, KY.

By Jim

The Lindsey Wilson bell was a gift, presented to the school the first week classes were held on the hill the week of January 4th, 1904.
"Mr. George Fletcher, who was the contractor in building the college and dormitory, left for his home in Leitchfield last Thursday morning... Mr. Fletcher's deportment in this place during his stay for a half a year or more has been that of a gentleman and his work has given entire satisfaction. He has made many friends in this place and in Adair county, and he leaves Columbia with many regrets. Before leaving he presented the college with a bell, and hopes that business will again call him to this place that he may hear it ring."
The brief story above appeared in an article found n the Wednesday, January 13, 1904 Adair County News (as transcribed in "From Hope to Hilltop: The Establishment of the Lindsey Wilson Training School."

We hope additional comments are received on this fascinating history note from Martha Henry Berry, the daughter of a revered President of Lindsey Wilson College, the late Rev. V.P. Henry.

A large crowd gathered near the fairgrounds as well as inside the gates for a 20 minute Fourth of July fireworks display at 9:00pmCT, despite a steady rain.

None were disappointed with the much longer show, as they stood, some under umbrellas, some making canopies of hatchback doors, and most just standing in the light drizzle which continued throughout the show.
