By Mark Hale

The other day I took a cell phone picture of a local legend and The Hardscratch Icon of the century. Johnny Bledsoe is known all over these parts for his magnifacent words of wisdom.

People from all over know Johnny for his abilities to build a fence and tell incredible stories. No other community has what we have in Hardscratch in the one and only "Jonnny B."

Chris Oliver: The quote paraphrases Harry Truman

About: Wisdom from Columbia KY past

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

That is a tremendous quote, and it's one of my favorites. Harry Truman was the one to say:" It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit."

Obviously, Mr. Wooten agreed with President Truman.

s/Chris Oliver

Thanks, Coach Oliver. Harry Truman is another of my heroes, as was the late Ruel Wooten. Thank you so much for making the connection. -EW

This cute little guy is a Box Turtle. Interesting fact: The average life span of a box turtle is 40 years but they can live to to the ripe old age of 100.

Connection between fawn, strange behaving Tabor doe?

About: Fawn picture by Lawrence Hamilton

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

I was just wondering if you knew the location where the person who sent this picture in? I would like to talk to the photographer

I saw a doe yesterday which was really acting strange over near Joe Johnson's place in the Tabor Community, and thought this might be the mother of the little fawn.

Proof we live in one of the greatest places in the USA

About: ACHS baseball gets field renovation

To ColumbiaMagazine.com

I would like to comment on the Adair County Baseball Field being voted one of the teams to be renovated. This is proof positive that we live in one of the greatest places in the USA. When the people of Adair County want something we all pull together to achieve it. It has been shown in all the money that has been raised for the Adair County Band and now for all the votes the baseball field received. We may be small in numbers but we are large in commitment to our community.

Again, I am proud of Adair County and everyone that voted.

s/Diane Benningfield

Lasagna Gardening: layering organic matter like Mother Nature

By Barbara Armitage
Adair County Garden Club. (270) 250-2979

No digging, no tilling, no weeding, no kidding!

Lasagna gardening is a simple method of layering organic material just like Mother Nature would and letting the garden do the work for you.

In the beginning...

My fist garden was a disaster. I had a shovel, a hoe and a rake and I nearly had a heat stroke. Everything I knew about gardening could be summed up into one word "dig".

I dug up the grass and weeds. Then I double-dug the soil 12 inches or more deep - raked and hoed until the soil was loose and smooth. All I grew in my garden were blisters, a sore back and a bumper crop of weeds.

The Adair Co. Garden Club offers

By Barbara Armitage

Every gardener knows that successful gardening begins with the soil and building good rich soil is only a matter of organics. The Adair County Garden Club is offering "chippings" to anyone who is interested in adding fresh organic material to their compost, existing gardens or for building a "Lasagna" style garden.

Chippings are the result of grinding trees, branches or leaves - resulting in "mulch". Currently we have a branch/leaf mix of mulch available. This mixture is a good blend of both brown and green organic material that composts quickly.

Chippings are available by the bucket, scoop, truck or trailer by appointment only. Donations accepted with all proceeds going to the Adair County Garden Club.

Contact Barbara Armitage at (270) 250-2979 for more information.

About: ACHS baseball gets Frosted Flakes field renovation

Agrees with Shamarie on property

About: Agrees with Shamarie Claiborne on property rights

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

Shamarie, I agree with you 100%. For far too many years we have let other people tell us what to do with our property that we work hard to get and pay taxes on.

I live in Florida now but I lived in Adair county for a while. It is a beautiful county with beautiful people. I have many friends there.

Don't let anyone push you around.
