Trucks in The Holler: An helpmeet for 1937 panel truck

2009-06-18 - The Holler, Old Clearsprings RD, Columbia, KY - Photo by Shamarie Claiborne.
"Anyone who has traveled The Holler knows Kevinplaced his pride and joy in the bottom a couple of year ago.' writes Shamarie Claiborne. "The panel wagon is a commanding figure. Since his birth in 1937 this Chevrolet panel truck has hauled everything from moonshine to firewood (or so the owner tells). He waits patiently to be restored. We have provided the majestic old man with a partner. Her name is 'Lady Ford,' born in 1936. Now she has had somemodifications, but is as beautful as ever."

A guest review: Dippin at the Dairy

Written with humor, a bit of bias (she a known and admitted Coca-Cola-ian) and some blasphemy ("I was apprehensive to try the BBQ sandwich because I have found other establishments in Kentucky have left me disappointed"), the account is pretty accurate, and adds a touch of empathy for the plight of the Willis and Hamlett kids, when she writes,"They prefer fresh ingredients even if it means (lower profits and) their children might not go on to higher education." -EW

By Pamela Mikaelian

I finally experienced a long-time Columbia tradition today by eating at Columbias Dairy Dip.

After perusing the menu, I opted for the pork BBQ sandwich, tater tots and a fountain drink. I was pleasantly surprised that this hit my wallet for just $5.29.

Tobacco Hornworm Moth, aka Hummingbird Moth

B.J. Fudge's interesting 'Moonlight beastie' has dubious, problematic previous life, when it is the notorious green tobacco worm, whose diet also includes tomato leaves. -CM
About: Flowers and Insects of Adair Co., KY: Moonflower beast

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:When I saw Billy Joe's picture of the hummingbird moth I smiled because I first encountered this moth last year on the same type of flower. Little did I know that we were well acquainted. A trip to the local extension office and Nick Roy revealed that the identity of this night time creature is truly a hummingbird moth or prehaps better known to many Adair Countians as a Tobacco Hornworm Moth.

Followup 1941 21st district basketball tourney

Some great details of the 1941 21st District Tournament: Glensfork beat Cub Run. Breeding upset Memorial. Columbia barely beat Knifley. And in the championship game, the Greensburg Dragons beat Horse Cave. All those details, and more, below:

From Jim

The February 12, 1941 Adair County News reported that William Carneal, who arrived at Columbia High School in the fall of 1940 as teacher and basketball coach, had resigned a few days earlier to accept a position with TVA in Mussel Shoals, Ala."The new position...is said to be a decided promotion."

Confirmation: Billy Joe Fudge creature is Hummingbird moth

About: Flowers and Insects of Adair Co., KY: Moonflower beast

To Billy Joe Fudge via CM:

That's what's known as a Hummingbird Moth. Nothing wrong with that image, in my opinion, Billy. Although, I didn't know that they stirred at night, I've seen them usually during the daylight hours. That's one of the largest species of its type that I ever seen. Thanks for sharing.

s/Tony Harvey

Thanks. Agree on the Billy Joe Fudge photograph, too. It's great, despite the photographer's Aw Shucks humility. A real spellbinder. Which leads to an interesting question for me, whether BJF will have a photograph in National Geographic first, or become poet laureate of Kentucky first? -EW

Impossible Dream Come True for Pedro

Presentation at AHRA meet: Thanks to the Darrell Gwynn Foundation the dream of a motorized wheelchair will come true. The Adair County child who has won the hearts of fellow students and teachers alike, who drew the most sustained applause on Awards night at Adair County Elementary School when he was recognized for academic achievement, will travel with his crews from ACES to Bowling Green, KY, for a special presentation
WEARING RED I forgot to mention that we will be wearing red (Pedro's favorite color) shirts to the AHRA Reunion Saturday to show we are on Pedro's Crew -JACKIE MONTGOMERY

By Jackie Montgomery

On Saturday, June 20th at Beech Bend Park in Bowling Green, an impossible dream will come true, thanks to Darrell Gwynn and the Darrell Gwynn Foundation.

My godson, Pedro, was born with Cerebral Palsy. He cannot walk because of this, and speech is very difficult for him. Pedro does not let his condition define him, or keep him from working towards being able to walk, talk, and do the things twelve-year-old kids do.

Moonflower beast is identified as hummingbird moth

About: Flowers and Insects of Adair Co KY Moonflower beast

To ColumbiaMagazine.com

This is a "sphinx moth" commonly called a hummingbird moth. I encountered some the first year I moved to Kentucky and also thought it was an odd hummingbird until my bird watching aunt clarified to me just what it was. Interesting little creature.

Stone family get together: A splendid portrait

About: Stone family get-together June 14 2009 photo by Melissa Taylor

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

What a splendid family portraiture of my niece, Miss Bailey Ann Taylor Stone's second cousins twice removed! Miss Stone's great-grandfather, Mr. Rollin Thomas Stone, of Louisville, is a first cousin of the portrait subjects' father, James Frank Stone (1895-1968).

The Stone family is an old, historic, and proud Adair County family! I enjoy researching the genealogy of my niece's Stone family.

That Championship Team brings back memories of a Dad

Father's Day Anthology for June 21, 2009

A MEMORY for FATHER'S DAY 2009: Dr. Roger D. Smith recalls visits to Memorial Coliseum while he was a dental student at UK and the flashbacks which brought memories of The Game in 1955, a game he watched with his father, still living then, but who died in 1991.
About: Fifty-four year old program from past ACHS time of glory

By Roger Smith, DMD

While at the University Of Kentucky College Of Dentistry I had to escape for a few hours one day.

I started walking and found myself standing in front of Memorial Coliseum. It was one of those days that I'm sure other people have had when you can't decide if you're really in the right place or you've got a severe case of wanting to go home.

BJ Fudge in his own defense: With a poem

About: On Comment about Grandchildren made by BJ Fudge

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

The definition of smart I was hoping to communicate was: Amusingly clever, witty.

I am a grandchild, a child, a parent, and a grandparent and would not want to be an offense to any of the aforementioned groups or to anyone, individually.

In this age which demands political correctness, I suppose I should have said, "Grandchildren are special because they are born with the knowledge and understanding that their Grandparents and Parents are equally amusingly clever and witty."
