COF sends the science on need to fall out of bed early Further elucidation on: Local lore: Trees which bring death to planters By the COF Oracle from Dun Roman where Miz Emily swears I fall outta bed everyday As any red-blooded American (native or imported - makes nary a difference) knows it takes a good thump on the head to knock some sense into any youngun. Of course no one would tolerate someone thumping a bairn on purpose, so one could only hope that the child's guardian angel would give a little timely nudge early on a before the little tyke got too far along. Otherwise - God bless him - he might just grow up to be a democrat!< 2009-06-15 15:33:59 | Comments | Printable version

Local lore. Trees which bring death to planters Everybody knows not to plant a weeping willow tree. You are tempting Fate if you plant one. "As soon as they are big enough to shade your grave, you die," local wisdom goes. Now we've learned that the list is longer. Add cedars, magnolias, and holly trees. Same thing. Our understanding is that it is not the same for volunteer weeping willows, cedars, holly trees, and magnolias. Death just stalks the planter of the trees. But the late Adair County author Janice Holt Giles took no chances on even these. Beautiful willows at one time could be seen all around the farm pond beside the Giles House at Spout Springs. Mrs. Giles had Henry cut them all down and salt the stumps to kill them, their association with death was so great. Henry Sullivan was way ahead when it came to music About: Carol Perkins The Gift of Music the story of her father, Uncles Lonzo and Oscar, and the very, very musical Sullivans -and Acrees - of Metcalfe Co., KY To ColumbiaMagazine.com: I can vouch for Henry's ability to play music. My brother, Teddy, and I played with him for a short while in a band. We played until he figured out we were not good enough to play music with the Sullivans. He was way ahead of us in musical ability. It was fun being around him and some of the other musicians. He always had lots of patience with us young boys who had learned to play trombones in the Greensburg High School band. I love to read Carol's articles - she is a good writer. s/Gary T.
