Questions concerning Columbia, Bank Robbery re-enactment About: The James Gang: Why no response? To ColumbiaMagazine.com: Ed - knowing that you have great insight in all matters of concern, I have pondered on two questions concerning the James Gang and Columbia. The brief excerpt below, transcribed directly from the original source, is from a lengthy article Judge Baker penned for the Adair County News. It appeared in the April 27, 1898 edition, two days before the 26th anniversary of the robbery. The James Gang? Why no response? To ColumbiaMagazine.com: Since I have not had any response to my inquiry about the James Gang riders in Columbia, I am taking it that it is a secret, closed, society. Am I correct? s/Charles Marshburn By no means. Adair Countians are not prone to talk at random, to give opinions and facts without serious reflection. At this very moment, several respected historians, all with opinions which are poles apart, are researching your question. For a fact, just one aspect of the robbery, the exact location of the "Open the Gate, Conover," gate is being debated. It was on the "Columbia to the Greasy Creek settlements" road, somewhere near the State Park, Highway 55 South Road, Columbia, KY. At least two locations, almost as many as the authenticated birthplaces of Abraham Lincoln are candidates. In due time, the information will be revealed. In the meantime, for you and those eager to learn about the glorious history of Adair County, there is the Adair County Genealogical Society, which meets each first Monday at 6:00pmCT, at the Adair County Public Library, 307 Greensburg ST, Columbia, KY. A $15 membership, gets a year's subscription to the quarterly Adair County Review which is worth the dues, whether you've the gumption to make it to the meetings or not. -EW 2009-06-13 06:58:24 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Letters and Reader Feedback
