Big push needed this afternoon to put ACHS in 15th place

Bigger effort needed so that Iowa community won't be ACHS' Waterloo. ACHS is #16, but next jump is formidable obstacle. It's time to roll tanks. A check at 2:43pmCT showed Adair County had passed the 7,000 vote mark!

By Shamarie Claiborne

Adair County has moved into 16th place in the Field of Dreams contest. The climb has been really big this week, from 46th on Wednesday, May 13, 2009 to 16th today, Sunday, May 17, 2009.

Now, the competition is much tougher.

Carol Perkins: Waspers, Punkins, and Tators

Waspers, Punkins, and Tators

The butchering of the English language didn't originate in Kentucky, contrary to what critics of our state might say. We didn't buy the butcher shop. We inherited it.

A thank you to Ol' Joe, CM

About: David and Effie Heskamp

Dear Ed,

What a pleasant surprise to "open" my Sunday morning edition of ColumbiaMagazine and find a photo of my parents, David and Effie Heskamp, on the front page. They were an attractive couple, weren't they?

Actually, Mother would have been "only" 99 this year...born 1910, but who's counting? Last year, we had a great birthday party for her.

Thanks to Ol' Joe and to CM for this remembrance.

Sincerely,
s/Ann Heskamp Curtis

Thanks. The photo is one of our favorites, and they were such a memoraby attractive paid. And, I understand, it will have a prominent place in Ol' Joe's gallery. Thanks for your understanding on the bad arithmetic. We've corrected the error. I guess it would be better not to let people know that Effie Heskamp was my ACHS general math class teacher. And a good one, for those capable of learning. -EW

The SC Analysis: ACHS led the nation yesterday

But we have to do more, today! This field is important not only to the Adair County Baseball Players, but to the Softball Team, and, in the interest of full disclosure, I am a Band Booster, it is and will be used for practice by the Macy's 2009 Thanksgiving Day Parade Adair County Marching Band! -Shamarie

Melissa's tolerant frog reminds vet of 1 of his admirals

About:The tolerant frog

To ColumbiaMagazine.com

I really like Melissa Taylor's photo of the tolerant frog. It reminds me of an admiral I worked for when I was in the Navy. I also like Melissa's caption. Very clever. We have a county full of good photographers and a great on-line magazine in which to display them.

George Kolbenschlag

Thanks! Some great humorists, too. Chuckling now. Can't figure out whether it was from the clever Tolerant Frog caption or you critique. Either way, you are right about the county being full of good photographers! The on-line magazine, if great, is so because of these and other contributors. -EW

Tom Chaney. #205. May 17, 2009: Night and Day

Robert B. Parker Yet Again

May provided a fine sunny Sunday a week or so ago. There was sunshine with a few clouds -- temperature about 70.

My friend's deck back in the knobs sported a new recliner. The feeding place for his neighbor birds was active. I don't know birds except as they differ from snakes or mice, but they had lots of blue and red and grey and black and white and yellow feathers in a variety of combination.
