Animals posing, revealing secrets to Shamarie Claiborne

2009-04-26 - Adair County, KY - Photo by Shamarie Claiborne.
THERE IS A SUSPICION THAT SHAMARIE'S CAMERA HAS A SPECIAL ANIMALS MODE. They seem to pose for her to take portraits or reveal interesting facts of their lives to her. The complete confidence of the squirrel, left, immediately reveals he has to be a resident of the Jones-Wright. Fifty years ago, they were the never-hit targets of boys with bb guns there, but today they are just sassy and well fed. In the upper right corner An ant thinks its died and gone to Green County heaven. It's drinking its fill of Ski, the national drink of South Central Kentucky. Middle right A bee is flying high. But in the lower right There is concern. The baby bird fell from its nest, and is hiding from the dogs.

Jim's Grill, Edmonton, KY

Longtime Edmonton eatery has hard to beat variation of the original "Debbie Burger." A marvelous handwich served, Metcalfe Co. style, on Texas Toast, deluxed with veritable salad, two cheeses!

While traveling through Edmonton, KY, a few weeks ago, and stopped by at Jim's Grill, I got my "usual" which is a variation of the original "Debbie Burger" - 4 oz. fresh ground beef grilled with jalapeno peppers, on top of crispy lettuce, tangy tomato, crunchy sweet onion, pickles, mayo all nestled between toasted Texas Toast with (American Cheese on top, Pepper Jack Cheese on the bottom slice.

Melissa Taylor likes Sharyn McCrumb mountain stories

About: "Tom Chaney 202 Review The Songcatcher"

To ColumbiaMagazine.com

I was first drawn to Sharyn McCrumb's writing when I found her 1995 novel, "If I'd killed him when I met him..." Admittedly, I bought the book because I was intrigued by the title; but it began my love of Ms. McCrumb's writing. I've been hooked since then!

Mr. Chaney speaks of not leaving when you're called for dinner --- you aren't able to hear the call because when you are immersed in one of Ms. Crumb's novels, you find yourself in the center of the story, sitting on a mountainside hearing the birds chirping and watching the story occur around you! I'm a little less fond of her latest Nascar themed books, but only because I'm not a big fan of racing. Most likely those who are would be drawn in to them as I have been to her beautiful mountain stories.

PREPARED WITH THE HOLY TRINITY: One last round of cold weather calls for one last hearty dish, but this one is good on any day. This upscale beans and rice starts with part of a smoked sausage, browned and removed from the pan, then mirepoix (the holy trinity of carrot, onion and celery), then half a red pepper and 2 cloves of garlic. A Mall Massage

We women are often searching for ways to alleviate stress, to feel better, to relax and to enjoy life. I have finally learned to do a few things for myself that I would have never done years ago. Now and then I have a manicure, pedicure, and even an occasional massage. Men are also joining in on these luxuries too. However, not all of my experiences are good ones.

Tom Chaney: #202. Review, The Songcatcher

Of Writers And Their Books, Sunday, 26 April 2009: Tom Chaney Book Book Review #202 The Songcatcher, by Sharyn McCrumb. Last week's Tom Chaney essay on The New Farmers' Almanac: Hard Pressed. Typos and Weather
By Tom Chaney

Catching a Ballad

Sharyn McCrumb has caught me up and fixed me to the topmost limbs of a chestnut tree long dead on the slopes of the eastern mountains. I don't know how to get a' loose.

I had read The Songcatcher and thought it a fine book, then the unabridged audio tape of the novel came through the store sometime back. I stuck it in the tape deck of my car and listened to it over the next couple of months whenever I went to the grocery store or the doctor or the bootlegger -- except if you got Ms McCrumb, you don't need a bootlegger.
