About: "UFO Flying saucer over Columbia, Adair Co., KY" photo by Tim Edwards

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

If the dome is just deocrative and has no other purpose, it was a waste of $50,000. Coming off the Square on Cambellsville Street, at the highest point, you just see a small part of the top with the naked eye.Just one man's opinion.

Comment: James Ray is faster than automobile, in town

About: "Faces of Adair County KY James Ray Hammond" photo by Caleb Irvin

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

James Ray is a faster mode of travel than the automobile. I was at the old Walmart and saw James Ray leaving. I traveled to the Columbia Square and believe it or not James had arrived before me - by just walking. Of course, he has more practice in walking than the average Adair Countian.

City collected 87 bags of trash; 261 volunteers sign up

Thanks to everyone for the tremendous turnout!

By Rhonda Loy, City of Columbia Events Planner

We had a great time and made a lot of progress in keeping the city streets clean. We had a total of 60 volunteers picking up a total of 87 bags of trash on Saturday, April 18, 2009.

The groups who participated Saturday were Adair County Middle School (ACMS) Betas, ACMS Ipods, The Garden Club, LIndsey Wilson College ACES club, plus miscellaneous volunteers.

These groups are signed up to help with the clean-up later in the month of April: John Adair 4th Grade and teachers; all of the Head Start Students plus their teachers, ACHS Science Class/Pride Club and their teacher Sheila Willis; Colonial William Casey Pride Club, LWC Bonners Schollars LWC, Amy Wells; and LWC International Students Club.

Mayor Bell and I would like to thank all volunteers who made this year's event a great success.

Since April is Pride Month we are able to schedule groups throughout the month that cannot participate on clean up day. Currently we have several groups and a total of 261 volunteers signed up for cleanups throughout the month. You can still volunteer to help, just call (270) 384-2501.

Notice on Events submissions: Please include street and number

As a courtesy to our readers, and as a public safety concern, we are asking that all events notices have a street and street number included with the announcement. If you do not know the street number, you can get it by calling your 911 center and ask for the Address Coordinator.

In Adair County, that number is (270) 384-4760.

To everyone: Thanks for the response. The street number had originally been requested as a navigational tool, to allow those who are unfamiliary with the area to have a quick way to Google for directions, but since working to improve directions, we've learning, from emergency responders, how important it is to have street numbers with all addresses for safety's sake.We hope those submitting events for the events calendar will remember to include the street and number with all subsequent announcment submissions. Comments on this subject are welcome.

Caleb Irvin portrait of James Ray is work of art

And a tribute to his subject, who contributed 'got a couple' to the Adair County lexicon, always accompanied by his trademark 'double hand slap to the right hip pocket.'
About: Faces of Adair County KY James Ray Hammond by Caleb Irvin

By Billy Joe Fudge

I almost lose myself in this shot of James Ray sitting in a chair. I am no expert in identifying the line that delineates between a photograph and a work of art but I do believe this photo is a work of art.If Life Magazine were ever resurrected this should be the first cover.

This photo takes me back to the summer of '67 which was my rookie year at the Dairy Queen. James Ray was one of my most frequent and favorite customers.

SITE POLICY: Free publicity, Fair Play terms on CM

ColumbiaMagazine.com's management will do everything possible to promote civic, church, school, and benefits on a Free Publicity Fair Play policy.

The policy is designed to make getting information out to the biggest audience in a concise, easy to use, totally free or very inexpensive manner. It is designed to let fund raising go to the cause it is meant to promote. It is meant to get attendance at local non-profit functions at no cost or at the lowest possible cost.

It is not meant to save on advertising budgets only to have the funds transferred to other competing media.

It's Free and it is extensive, but there are a few limits and conditions:

The announcement is posted in 1) CM News on the Main Page, 2) CM Benefits & Fundraisers, 3) in CM Events. 4) On the day of the event, there will be a brief announcement again in the Today Feature on the Main Page.

Additional publicity is available as paid advertising but is not required or even suggested. The basic four part publicity package listed above is Free, predicated, of course, on fair play and the assumption that no paid advertising of any kind is bought elsewhere, in any form - print, poster, radio, television, t-shirt, temporary signs, cable, or other internet - without comparable additional advertising on ColumbiaMagazine.com

Cub Scouts Pack 888 pick up litter on Richards Hollow Road

By George Kolbenschlag

The intrepid scouts from Cub Scout Pack 888 and some of the moms, dads and siblings on their PRIDE road pick-up Saturday morning, April 18, 2009.

They picked up along Richard Hollow Road in Gradyville. They found a lot of trash. It was an ideal road for smaller kids because it's light in traffic and several of the nice folks who live out that way who did drive past stopped to tell the boys what a great job they were doing.
