Stick horses: Picking best of herd was big task About: Stick Horses by Carol Perkins To ColumbiaMagazine.com: I really enjoyed the story about the stick horses. I remember the task of picking out the best of the herd, and putting a grass string bridle on it. (I shudder to think of driving a nail in the head of a stick horse.) You had to be especially careful when jumping a ditch or obstacle-these horses were prone to throwing the rider. Then again, maybe it was my lack of riding expertise. I always traveled better on my bike. What sweet days those were. s/Peggy Fudge 2009-04-19 15:32:34 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Letters and Reader Feedback
ACMS Jr. Beta, IPODS team helps in City PRIDE clean-up Experience was kick-off to Wednesday's Earth Day activities Click on headline for story plus photos By Jennifer Kemp Students from Adair County Middle School helped the City of Columbia in the PRIDE cleanup efforts Saturday, April 18, 2009.Members of the 7th Grade IPODS team and the Junior Beta Club had a first hand experience in taking Responsibility In a Desirable Environment. The students worked hard and were very surprised at the amount of rubbish that is disposed of on our city streets. They "logged in" over 15 trash bags. During the BBQ lunch, two students won in the prize drawing held by the City and received $25 gift cards to Wal-Mart. The group received a very welcome round of free ice water at Sonic Drive In. It was very much appreciated. It was a great experience for all students involved. Saturday's participation was the kick-off activity for events to be held next week at ACMS in honor of Earth Day, which is Wednesday, April 22, 2009. 2009-04-19 14:45:05 | Comments | Printable version

Carol Perkins: Stick Horses Riding a stick horse in her childhood was very much different from the city stick horses kids ride today, Carol Perkins remembers, in this wonderful story of growing up when playtime was, of necessity, a very creative endeavor-CM To read her next previous story click on "Playing in the Band" By Carol Perkins STICK HORSES A stick horse was a vital part of my life when I was a child. How could I ride the range (the field behind my house) without my horse? He could trot and gallop, and his gait was worthy of a trophy at the county fair. I usually kept my horse in my great uncle's barn (when my mother wouldn't let me bring one more tobacco stick home), but sometimes I tied him to a tree behind the house. Tom Chaney: Essay. Hard Pressed - Typos and Weather Of Writers And Their Books: Tom Chaney Book Essay Hard Pressed: Typos and Weather, Last week's Tom Chaney review: Jesus Interrupted: Revealing the Hidden Contradictions in the Bible (and Why We Don't Know About Them), by Bart D. Ehrman By Tom Chaney bookstore@scrtc.com Hard Pressed - Typos and Weather Harry Hansbrough, storied founder of The Hart County Herald, predecessor of this hyphenated weekly, had a standard response to those who found errors in the Herald. "Oh, we just put those in to see if anybody is reading the paper." Over the years some real bloopers have found their way into print. One of my favorites had to do with a large headline on the front page after the annual Horse Cave fair around mid-century which featured a fine horse show. Banner type proclaimed "Hore Show Great Success!" A tribute to a great Dad, a great Columbia neighborhood For baby wrens or teen-agers, the Jones-Wright Addition is a good place to wake up in . . . from first hand experience, Shamarie says, in this early Father's Day story. Click on headline for story plus photo By Shamarie Claiborne I went to help my dad yesterday and when we got done, he said, "Bring your camera. I want to show you something." In his shop behind the house on a shelf was a nest of baby wrens. Of course I took pictures and when I was done he told me it was the third year in a row the mother wren had come back. Dad lets her nest remain during the winter months and then in the spring, when Ms. Wren returns, it's ready to move back into to raise her babies. I can see why. I was raised in that neighborhood and can say from first hand experience... It is a good place to wake up in! 2009-04-19 08:51:38 | Comments | Printable version

Advertising in South Central Kentucky has gotten cheaper Would it be so great a bargain if you could buy that electric adding machine you paid $750 for in 1972 for even the same money? Would it be a good deal? Hardly, when companies give away pocket calculators which will do far more, today, FREE And certainly not, when a $400 computer today can do millions more things, almost instantly. In advertising, ColumbiaMagazine.com is that kind of better deal: It's a whole new way of managing advertising dollars. The place to start over, to rethink everything you've done in the past. The place to think your costs in pennies instead of dollars. It just makes sense in today's world. Email us .
