Carol Perkins: Playing in the Band Membership in the Marching was special. Band appearances were memorable, but none still holds more emotional memories than the parade march through Livingston, TN, in 'uniforms' which didn't draw the response expected.-CM To read her next previous story click on "To Tan or Not to Tan" By Carol Perkins PLAYING IN THE BAND When I was in elementary school, I joined the band, along with my friends. We had no uniforms and not many instruments. Those of us who wanted to play had to find horns the best way we could, which meant used ones from music stores, pawn shops or in the attics of our relatives. I played the clarinet. I didn't play it well. In fact, because we didn't have enough music, I played off music for a trumpet. I must have been good at transposing since the notes were different. In truth, I must have been a genius since I barely could read music. By Tom Chaney bookstore@scrtc.com Reading Jesus Last Sunday we began the annual ceremonies of holy week -- the events at the very center of the Christian year and at the heart of its message. It was printed for Thanksgiving, 2007, but seems just appropriate for today, Easter Sunday, April 12, 2009.-EW By The Rev. Joey N. Welsh SOME THOUGHTS ON SMALL TOWN VIRTUES Several years back, at a mission study that took place at First United Methodist Church in Munfordville, a discussion question asked us to think about differences among urban, small town and rural lifestyles. For example, how many of your great grandchildren are home from school for 2 weeks (or more) with the measles; or who of those kids are quarantined along with their families with the highly contagious smallpox, mumps or chickenpox. Letter: People who throw trash out; excessive speed in town About: "Adair Countians live in a beautiful place in the world" To ColumbiaMagazine.com: It is very sad to see how so many people throw trash out of their vehicles and the rest of us are left with their garbage. I guess we have almost gotten used to seeing this out on back country roads but we were not prepared for what happens right in Columbia itself. People who are stopping at a stop sign, bicyling (yes, it's true) and even walking down Burkesville street and/or Guardian Street seem to feel no shame in discarding wrappers, cans, boxes, etc. on the street. I can't imagine how anyone could do that but it happens almost every day. I don't know what the answer is, just like I don''t understand the high rate of speeding by vehicles on Burkesville Street that is permitted to go on all the time. I just don't get it. s/Donna Saunders Columbia, KY 2009-04-12 04:10:07 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Letters and Reader Feedback
