The COF: Keith Livermore offered haute cuisine at Tucker's

About: Sadly Madrids restaurants have no poke nor dry land fish

To ColumbiaMagazine.com

Reckon all y'all got your favorite dining establishment, but it takes some to best Tucker's under the management of Chef Keith Livermore.

Time was when he'd offer demi-glace, galette of foie gras, ballottine en papillote, truffled amuse bouche, Assiette of local Rabbit with a light mustard & girolle sauce, Cannon of English Lamb stuffed with Wild Woodland Mushrooms and Truffles, imprisoned in a pastry cage with a Sauce of Wild Rowan Berries.

Course none of us had any idea what he was talking about but didn't matter much anyhow, since it all tasted like nuked cheeseburgers.

Now those were the culinary hi-lites of beautiful downtown Knifley!

The Story of the Easter Ducklings

2009-04-10 - Adair County, KY - Photo photos by Clara Conover; collage by Betty Sue Jasper.
A True Story with a Happy Ending

Once upon a time (back in the early 1960's) there was a little girl named Betty Sue who was given two baby ducks for Easter. She loved those little ducklings and put them in their own swimming pool in her backyard on Wall Street in Columbia. Betty Sue noticed that the ducks only swam on top of the water and never got their heads wet. She wanted them to swim underwater, so she pushed their little heads down under the water just to help them out . Luckily, Betty Sue's mother was close by and rescued the little ducks. She took them in the house and dried them out on a heating pad.

After the ducks recovered, Betty Sue and her mother and father took the ducks to live on a farm out in the county. A year later Betty Sue went to visit her Easter Ducks and found that they had grown up and made a complete recovery from their underwater adventure. And everyone lived happily ever after. The End

Sadly, Madrid's restaurants have no poke nor dry land fish

About: "Epicurean Kentuckian: Mushroom time in Knifley"

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

Once again I have to thank you for reminding me of the Epicurean delights of Knifley. I hit the big 75 tomorrow and although Madrid has some of the world's best restaurants I couldn't find ONE that offered dry land fish or poke.

I remember well the day that Susie Q was born and Luke and Ina were my first two employers; and Mary Hatfield cooked a LOT of free meals for me and other friends of Travis.

I have settled on Cous Cous for my big day---mostly due to a couple of outstanding Moroccan girlfriends. My Dad (Robert Hovious) visited us in Paris and didn't like the looks, smell, spelling or sound of Cous Cous---I hope he will forgive me!

AdairBand.com

The community support for the Adair County High School Band Booster's drive to raise $140,000 to pay for the band members trip to appear on international television in the 2009 Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade got a huge boost this week from the Columbia-Adair County Tourism Board. This letter was received by the Band Boosters Presdident, Doyle Lloyd, yesterday, April 9, 2009:
Doyle,

I wanted to tell you that the Columbia-Adair County Tourism Commission voted Tuesday night to make a contribution of $2,000.00 to the ACHS Band trip to the Macey's Parade.

We do not have the funds at this time but should have money coming in during the month of June and then we will get the check to you.

We are so very proud of the Band...more than words can describe. We also appreciate your many efforts, giving of your time, talent and resources toour youth. God will surely have huge blessings for you.

Thank you so very much.

Member of KNOT Club asks if City can afford to give to band

ANSWER AND A CIVICS LESSON: Our answer is "Yes." And we ask that County residents lighten up on the City of Columbia, when Fiscal Court has yet to give anything--but that can change if just one magistrate joins Joe Rogers and Wid Harris and Magistrates vote 7-3 AGAINST. At that point, County Judge Executive can vote twice. Once to tie the vote, and again to untie it. And the band would have County support to -EW

Ed,

If the City gives the band $10,000.00 for there trip where will the money come from?

I don't see anything wrong in giving the money if we have it to give. I am sure some things can be put off to a later day if we can help these young people achieve a goal they have worked hard to achieve.

Adair Band.com now posts $67,000 as in the bank

The Adair Band website now lists $67,000 toward the goal of $140,000 for the fundraiser to help send the band to New York City this fall for the 2009 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.

"That's money in the bank," Doyle Lloyd, president of the Band Boosters says. "It doesn't count the Columbia City Council's $3,000, or any funds which have not been actually deposited."

The band lists details on several big donations recently, including a very much appreciated $2,000 from Brian Comstock of Comstock Electric in Louisville, KY, another generous donation from Dr. Max Downey and from Personal Touch Healthcare, and a fundraiser by the Homemakers of Adair County which raised $309.

This morning, Friday, April 10, 2009, the website noted that there are 230 days left until Macy's 2009. To read all the details, check the site daily at Adair Band

Writer says Fred Rainwater No kind of Cherokee at all

About: "Rainwater Staff flew LWC cycling banner at Purdue"

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

Regarding a comment in your article that says: "Fred Rainwater, whom legend describes as a Cherokee Indian."

Fred Rainwater (William Frederick Rainwater) was no such thing. He was of plain English-German-Dutch stock, the son of George Alfred Rainwater and Permelia Susan Garner, of the Pulaski County Rainwaters who originated in North Carolina and England before that.

Best Regards
Susan Chance-Rainwater
Thanks. While we do not dispute the letter above, ColumbiaMagazine.com was accurate in saying that the plaque at Lindsey Wilson College says "Fred Rainwater, whom legend describes as a Cherokee Indian." That is what is inscribed on the plaque. We appreciate the the comments, but the issue would be with those responsible for the plaque's inscription, meant to honor Fred Rainwater, whatever his ancestry. We will make a link to Susan Chance-Rainwater's note in the story about the Lindsey Wilson Cycling Team's staff.
