Snakes of Adair Co., KY: Good Black Snake in the Holler

2009-04-08 - The Holler, Old Clearsprings Rd., District 2, Greater Ozark, KY - Photo by Shamarie Claiborne.
SHAMARIE CLAIBORNE took this beautiful photo of a black snake in The Holler. The picture-at-any-price photography side of her overtook the fear of snakes instilled in her by her Gascon, Metcalfe County ancestors. She admits wanting to terminate the snake, but her husband stood up for him, so he continues to hunt vermin in The Holler and other bad snakes. The expert identification of this snake by a qualified herpetologist would be appreciated. True stories of the snakes as valued barn residents would be welcome, as well.

Reader seeks enlightment on City water losses

About: "Is City actually paying for all that spilled water"

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

If my figures are correct, that means that 9 months worth of water spilled money and the three thousand council donated would send the band to New York. Oh well, that's just water over the dam, and should we or shouldn't we cry over spilled, leaked, wasted money?

Why is the water being spilled? Why hasn't the problem been resolved? Seems one could purchase quite a bit of pipe for that $15,000 plus a month.

Educate and/or enlighten me about this, please.

Charles Marshburn

Actually, one can hardly extrapolate from February's loss. It was extraordinarily high for the short month of February. Many months it is half or less. The leakage has been a growing problem for over five decades, if the WPA built system didn't start deterioriating for about two decades after installation. Maybe someone can send a more detailed explanation. EW

Letter: Echoes sentiments of Jaime White on City band support

About: "Appreciates those at City Hall who stood stronger for band"

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

Just wanted to echo the sentiments of Jaime White re: the unjustified lack of support from some council members for our community's award winning Adair Co. Marching Band. As a marching band alumnus I am so very proud of the band and the well-deserved, once-in-a-lifetime honor that is being given to them, as well as that of our community, with the invitation to New York this fall.

BJ Fudge: Is City actually paying for all that spilled water?

About: "City Council, Monday, April 6, meeting report"

Hey Ed,

I have a lot to say but will hold my peace for now.

You must have made a mistake.

Is our fair city actually paying for over 8,000,000 gallons of water that it is losing each month?

s/Billy Joe Fudge

Citizen Fudge wants to know if spilt water actually costs the city. The answer is "yes." The amount lost in the City's leaky water distribution system was $15,243.32 for February, 2009, according to the Columbia Water Department's Technical report. -EW
