Appreciates those at City Hall who stood stronger for band

About: "Columbia City Council Monday April 6 2009 meeting"

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

Ed, please allow me to use this venue to express my appreciation to Craig and Linda for the valient effort they gave to support the band. As I left the meeting the disappointment I saw in their eyes matched what I felt. Linda's comments about "this moment" for the community were right on.

Though the council has rightfully donated $130,000 to Little League organizations over the past 26 years, they couldn't dig deep enough to donate $10,000 just this once for Adair County's band.

I feel certain Linda and Craig, as well as Mayor Bell, will never regret speaking out on our behalf. As for the other members, I am equally certain they will have regrets.

"These are some of my favorites that I couldn't do without," writes Candice Compton Robertson. "I read To Kill a Mockingbird every Spring with my Freshmen, and it never gets old. Jesse Stuart is probably my favoite, though; he is the only person who could make you fall in love with a black snake.

Appreciates efforts of Mayor, Councillors Waggener, Dean

About: "Columbia City Council, Monday, April 6, 2009 meeting"

To ColumbiaMagazine.com

I am very proud of Linda Waggener, Craig Dean, and Mayor Bell actions.I am very dissapointed that our city council voted not to give our Band at least $10,000. This is not only a dissapointment it is shocking! Our kids deserve this trip and we should be ashamed of ourselves with a mere donation of $3.000. Band parents and supporters make up a huge number of the voters in Adair County and Columbia. I think the members of the City Council who held the donation to $3,000 will have to search their conscience hard now and when the ask for votes in the next election. I am only speaking from my heart, and don't intend to offend anyone.

Our apologies to Mr. Rowe. The letters with any reference to Mr. Rowe taking that position are being edited. Along with that, we will be instituting new policies to prevent the re-occurence of mis-attributed emails. -ED WAGGENER

Barbara Barnes: Proud of Linda Waggener for backing band

About: "Columbia City Council, Monday, April 6, 2009 meeting"

To ColumbiaMagazine.com

I am so proud of Linda Waggener for her support to the ACHS band. I am really disappointed in the way the others not backing her up. It's hard to believe that 3,000.00 is all they voted on to give the band and what I would like to see is the group that didn't vote for what she wanted to do is to be out at practice every day in the summer time when the kids are so hot they can hardly tell you who they are and then you realize that they are doing this for the school and the community instead of themselves.

As a great seafood lover, I gladly welcome Gov. Rells lobster dinner wager, said Gov. Beshear said. The First Lady and I will savor this lobster just as we will savor the NCAA victory of our University of Louisville Lady Cardinals.

The Columbia City Council voted to give $3,000 in all to the Adair County Marching Band for its precedent setting appearance in the 2009 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.

The band had asked for $10,000. And while they got only $3,000, Superintendent Darrell Treece told the Council that, while the schools had hoped for more, the figure is appreciated. He added that if the amount needed is close to the $140,000 total needed, the group might be back for more, later.

The Council meeting room was packed for the meeting, April 6, 2009. The first motion, by Councillor June Parson, was for the Council to give $1,000 from the current budget and $1,000 from next year's budget for a total of $2,000. This was seconded by Councillor Edwin Taylor.

Historic Preservation sparks intense debate

Columbia is doing it right, discussing the future of the courthouse. Doing it right, especially in the arts, Architecture, the architecture of the courthouse, is an art in itself. The courthouse can be art, and showcase art, including the performing arts as well as visual art

By Vonnie Kolbenschlag

The Adair County Courthouse is on the National Register and would qualify for federal grants.

To obtain these might take some work, but the Kentucky Historical Society and Kentucky Heritage Association would be very helpful in obtaining them because these groups realize the importance and value of saving Kentucky places that make Kentucky unique.

Vicky Browning Pike: We don't need to showcase our litter

In opposition to proposed Flatwoods landfill

Ed,

We certainly do not need another place to haul junk to in this neighborhood.

Our roads a covered with litter people loose getting to the transfer station now. This area being proposed as a landfill is low where water contamination would be at risk.

Also, it is along our new KY 61

We certainly don't want to showcase anymore of our litter to tourist and others passing by.

I have fought the litter issue in our community for years and I do not want to see this facility allowed in our community.

I would encourage anyone who cares about this community to call Perry Reeder and voice your opposition.

Perry can be contacted at (270) 634-3234. Thank you for making available a place where we can make our voice heard.

s/Vicky Browning Pike

Likes Red barn on Dry Creek Road

About: Red barn on Dry Creek Road

To Frances Salyers, via CM

Frances, your picture of the barn with its reflection in the water was great. That scene makes me want to take a photography class. Good Job.

Advertising in South Central Kentucky has gotten cheaper

Much cheaper. Much easier. Much more effective.

ColumbiaMagazine.com Shameless Self-Promotion

Would it be so great a bargain if you could buy that electric adding machine you paid $750 for in 1972 for even the same money? Would it be a good deal?

Hardly, when companies give away pocket calculators which will do far more, today, FREE

And certainly not, when a $400 computer today can do millions more things, almost instantly.

In advertising, ColumbiaMagazine.com is that kind of better deal: It's a whole new way of managing advertising dollars. The place to start over, to rethink everything you've done in the past. The place to think your costs in pennies instead of dollars. It just makes sense in today's world. Email us . Call us: (270) 384-2730 or (270) 384-3979.
