Bryan Blair:Courthouse is THE signature structure in Columbia Ed,I would have thought that the Adair County Courthouse would surely qualify to be on the National Register of Historic Places. I find it hard to believe that Columbians have not sought to protect the building by getting it on the Register. Why would anyone consider tearing down what is obviously THE signature structure in Columbia? There is much folklore associated with the building as well. I remember hearing as a child stories about a cave under the courthouse. Is there any documentation of such? s/Bryan Blair 2009-04-05 21:21:04 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Letters and Reader Feedback

Carol Perkins: To Tan or Not to Tan Having a beautiful tan has been a longtime quest, a simple ambition for some people, but one with occasional hilarious consequences our pale heroine, decidedly so when her search for tawney perfection lured her to Campbellsville, KY Still Edmonton's answer to Erma Bombeck quests on, a bit daunted, but still determined, she says "to wear a pair of white Bermuda shorts against tanned legsone time in my life." -CM To read her next previous story click on John Denver: The Memorial Service By Carol Perkins "TO TAN OR NOT TO TAN" Genteel women in the 1800's and early 1900's valued pale skin, especially inAmerica. Being pale was proof of their class and bloodline; therefore, most womenavoided the sun. My Grandmother Sullivan loved piddling around the farm, fishing in the pondbehind her house, picking blackberries, and raising gorgeous flowers. She was neveroutside without her bonnet and a long sleeve shirt. I never saw her or myGrandmother Reece with a sunburn or a suntan. My mother's generation did not tan either. They, too, protected their skin andcovered themselves from the sun because their mothers did and their mothers did. Shamarie Claiborne: and LWC could use courtroom for classes Agrees with: "Norma Jean Parnell Courthouse a beautiful part of history" To ColumbiaMagazine.com As most who know can confirm I love old things! They should be treasured and restored and used when possible. So, my auntie from Jaybird is correct that I agree with her completely! The courthouse, I think, would best be used as all the things people are talking about combined. It could have a historical area, a dinner or coffee shop area, and Lindsey Wilson could use the old court room for Criminal Justice classes. . . the list goes on; but the one thing I would not have on my list - is it's destruction! s/Shamarie Claiborne 2009-04-05 13:08:32 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Letters and Reader Feedback

Commentary: Tearing down courthouse thing makes her angry She has memories of 'riding broom' and of the bribery needed to get Bill Williams out from under the building, of when it was the place to meet Righteous outrage at notion - the very idea!- to: "Tear the old courthouse down" By Ann Burton Murphy This, "tear the courthouse down thing" really makes me mad. How many other town's have torn theirs down? I have a lot on memories, concerning the courthouse, that I've passed on to my son and grandsons. I remember when Shaw Rowe used to clean the courthouse. It was a big thing, to get to "ride on the big broom" that Shaw used to sweep the floor. Another memory was when our pet raccoon, Bill Williams, went under the courthouse and someone had to go to Luther Collins' Drug Store, buy an ice cream cone and an Orange Crush, to coax him to come out from under it. This may not sound like much, to a lot of people, but it made good memories, to a little girl and her two sisters, growing up in Columbia in the late 50s. It was also a big deal for everyone to meet up, at the courthouse, on Saturdays back then. 2009-04-05 11:17:34 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Commentary

Advertising in South Central Kentucky has gotten cheaper Would it be so great a bargain if you could buy that electric adding machine you paid $750 for in 1972 for even the same money? Would it be a good deal? Hardly, when companies give away pocket calculators which will do far more, today, FREE And certainly not, when a $400 computer today can do millions more things, almost instantly. In advertising, ColumbiaMagazine.com is that kind of better deal: It's a whole new way of managing advertising dollars. The place to start over, to rethink everything you've done in the past. Barbara Hancock: Extremely opposed to Flatwoods, KY landfill Agrees with: Steve York opposes landfill in Flatwoods (Adair Co., KY) To ColumbiaMagazine.com Your article suggested that opinions could be voiced on Columbia Magazine, but, other than our magistrate, who else can be contacted? I understand the need for landfills, but, why would you place it in a populated area? The site that is up for consideration is located right on the new south 61 project. Now won't that be attractive! Flatwoods is generally a swamp area, so this is going to create water contamination and also this area has very little top soil and is for the most part solid rock. I for one am extremely opposed to this project and if the residents of this area are given the chance to oppose this in any way you will find we are all of the same opinion on this. s/Barbara Hancock 2009-04-05 09:12:56 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Letters and Reader Feedback

Norma Jean Parnell: Courthouse a beautiful part of history To ColumbiaMagazine.com I can't believe that anyone would even think about tearing down something that has so much History behind it, as the courthouse does. I think the first courthouse was built about1803 and remodeled about1847 and again around 1884. We would be destroying a beautiful part of Adair County history-Its a Beautiful building. Billy Joe Fudge: Merits on both sides of courthouse issue Hey Ed, Well, well, well. It looks as if the elitist museum/coffee shop vote has edged out the right-wing demolition vote in the court of public opinion concerning the fate of our soon to be vacated county courthouse. Two cents worth of advice has already been given so here are my thoughts and you can keep the penny. I am going to be very diplomatic from the get go and tell you that there is some merit to each and every suggestion. I am sure that we all can envision many of the positives and some of the negatives of the afore mentioned suggestions and others as well. Joey Tucker: Tear the old courthouse down To ColumbiaMagazine.com The problem with a lot of towns in America is they want to "save" and "preserve" the past. This often hinders the future.
