Lorne Holler: Just my 2 cents worth on the courthouse

About: "Adair Co Courthouse should be a museum"

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

I think it would a great place to keep all the archives of historical value. Where I am from in Florida they had an old historical building - red bricks and all. This is where all the documents were kept and all historical photos were on display for everyone to see and enjoy. I don't know how old the courthouse is, but I hate all the old places being torn down for change. When the children get to the age where you can tell them about the history, it is gone. Just my 2 cents worth.

Garden Club gives guidelines for best results with seedling trees

Many received seedling trees at Farm, Home and Garden Expo, and many other organizations are giving them away this week

By Barbara Armitage
Public Affairs Officer, Adair County Garden Club

The Adair County Garden Club gave away seedling trees to all the visitors who attended the Farm, Home and Garden Expo on Friday, April 3, 2009. The Garden Club members want to thank everyone who waited in long lines to receive their trees - we hope that you will enjoy them for many years to come.

Many organizations are giving away free trees this month and we hope that you take advantage of their generosity. Unfortunately many of the seedlings will die if not taken care of properly. The Garden Club would like to help you give your young trees a better start in life. Follow these simple directions for planting and you will have a better success rate.

Ann Curtis: Museum could encompass sports, business artifacts

About: "Adair Co Courthouse should be a museum"

To ColumbiaMagazine.com

I like Mary Ann Garnett Dowling''s suggestion for a museum in the Courthouse. "Historical items" could also encompass artifacts such as high school basketball uniforms and jackets from the 1950s, memorabilia from businesses on the Square over the years and other more recent nostalgia.

The old Courthouse building seems plenty large enough to house a coffee shop/photography gallery as well.

I'd like to have a sandwich while I'm there, too.

Oh, and we will still call it The Courthouse, won't we?

(Prankster) Courthouse should be torn down

Suggests lawn with statue of Richard Lee Walker or other famous Adair Countian

About: Adair Co Courthouse should be a museum

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

I think that once the courthouse is empty, it should be tore down. Maybe some grass could be sewn and we could have a picnic/park area for all the people that work and eat down town, could come out and enjoy the weather during their breaks. The old courthouse is just a moneypit and an eyesore anyway. These different towns have statues of different things on their squares, maybe we could get one of Richard Lee Walker or some other famous Adair Countian.

Adair Co. Courthouse should be a museum

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

I think a very fitting use for the old Adair County Courthouse would be as a museum of Adair County history. This could be something that all Adair Countians could take pride in and call their own.

In many families there are historical documents, books, pictures, articles of pioneer clothing, tools, and other items too numerous to mention that are just waiting for a home.

Margaret Taylor: Thoreauvian experience in Pulaski Co., KY

Two hour visit was all too short and left writer wishing for more
Click on headline for complete story with photographs

By Margaret Taylor

On Thursday, April 2, 2009 Sammy and I had the opportunity to visit some friends in Pulaski County, KY, and tour their restored ancestral farm and log cabin. It was so beautiful, but pictures do not do it justice. While there, I couldn't help but think of Henry David Thoreau and Walden's Pond. Thoreau longed for the simple life with the sounds, smells, and looks of the woods, water and wildlife.

There was a time in my life when I could not understand that. Being someone who loves to camp out in a Hampton Inn or Best Western, I could never see myself staying in the backwoods with nothing.

Still not wanting to be a survivalist, today helped me realize how Thoreau felt and why he spent two years there. The sounds of the small waterfall, the birds chirping, little squirrels scurrying through the woods, and even the wind were wonderfully simple and serene. Spending two hours seemed only minutes and left me wanting more.

Mark Hale: Coffeshop for regular joes?

About: David Grigsby: A proposal for the Old Adair Courthouse

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

What is a "professional" coffee shop? Does that mean the regular joes like me could not use it. I'm not for that.

How about something for the entire public not just the upper crust.
