In Memory of Freddy Burton

"I called him a few times and was going to see him, but time ran out. How does that happen?"

By Albert T. Burton, Mooresville IN. 46158

It was January 12, 1966 a group of boys from Columbia, KY, met at the new Town Hall just off the Square: James Hughes, Dallas Holt, Kenny Beard, Freddy Burton and me.

We were lucky enough to get drafted. We mounted a Greyhound bus and were on our way to Ft. Knox, KY, where we were to begin Basic Training. We were all discussing how easy this training was going to be in January while cracking a few jokes.

Elvis Presley had just completed his training, just before we got there.

By Kelli Bonifer

If you are thinking of purchasing a home in the next year, you should be aware of the tax credit that is available to first-time homebuyers. In February, Congress passed the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, which provides first-time homebuyers with a tax credit of 10 percent of the purchase price of a home up to $8,000 or $4,000 each for married persons filing individually. This credit can be used on the 2008 tax returns, due April 15, or 2009 tax returns due next year. Qualifying taxpayers must purchase a home by December 1 to be eligible.

Feedback: Thoughts on membership requirements at The Pines

About: "Thinks better idea would be to drop country club image"

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

I play golf at least two times a year. If I keep my Georgia driver's license I can play how many times a year without paying the $1,000 membership fee (at The Pines at Lindsey Wilson)?

How many times can I play golf with my friends and relatives without paying the membership fee? I believe the college owns the golf course now and the college can mandate the price to play there, but I won't pay the $1,000 to play that course.
