Josh Nagode Sheboygan, WI, was a beast both days, took our top finishing spot in the hardest race of the year with a 6th place in the road race, and went down brutally fighting to do it again on Sunday. We were lucky enough to get drafted. We mounted a Greyhound bus and were on our way to Ft. Knox, KY, where we were to begin Basic Training. We were all discussing how easy this training was going to be in January while cracking a few jokes. Elvis Presley had just completed his training, just before we got there. First time homebuyer tax credit available American Recovery and Reinvestment Act makes some married homebuyers eligible for tax credit of up to $8,000 By Kelli Bonifer Adair County Extension Agent for Family & Consumer Sciences If you are thinking of purchasing a home in the next year, you should be aware of the tax credit that is available to first-time homebuyers. In February, Congress passed the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, which provides first-time homebuyers with a tax credit of 10 percent of the purchase price of a home up to $8,000 or $4,000 each for married persons filing individually. This credit can be used on the 2008 tax returns, due April 15, or 2009 tax returns due next year. Qualifying taxpayers must purchase a home by December 1 to be eligible. Stan McKinney's 21 year collection of photo negatives in archive Collection will be housed at CU's Montgomery Library By Joan C. McKinney, CU news and publications coordinator CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. - Negatives from more than 20 years of newspaper work by Campbellsville University journalism professor Stan McKinney are being preserved and catalogued in a unique arrangement between the Central Kentucky News-Journal and Campbellsville University's Montgomery Library. McKinney's 35mm negatives, taken from 1980 to 2000 when he was editor of the Central Kentucky News-Journal, a twice-weekly newspaper in Campbellsville, KY, are being scanned and placed in a digital collection which the public ultimately will be able to access. 21 Lindsey Wilson students present research findings at forum By Duane Bonifer, LWC Director of Public Affairs COLUMBIA, KY - Undergraduate students from 11 Southern Appalachian colleges and universities presented their research findings last weekend as Lindsey Wilson College hosted the 16th-annual Blue Ridge Undergraduate Research Conference. A total of 21 Lindsey Wilson students presented their research findings on nine projects. In addition to Lindsey Wilson, students from the following colleges presented their research: Alderson-Broaddus (WV.) College, Brevard (NC) College, Bryan (TN) College, Carson-Newman (TN) College, Ferrum (VA) College, King (TN) College, Lee (TN) University, Lincoln Memorial (TN) University, Milligan (TN) College and Tennessee Wesleyan College. If I keep my Georgia driver's license I can play how many times a year without paying the $1,000 membership fee (at The Pines at Lindsey Wilson)? How many times can I play golf with my friends and relatives without paying the membership fee? I believe the college owns the golf course now and the college can mandate the price to play there, but I won't pay the $1,000 to play that course. Guided hike at Dry Fork Gorge, Metcalfe Co., Saturday Metcalfe County Extension Agent for Family and Consumer Sciences Lynn Blankenship, will lead a free guided hike at the Dry Fork Gorge on Saturday, April 4, 2009. Rain or Shine: This will be a 2.5 mile hike with a steep uphill climb at the end. Participants will have to cross two creeks and should wear shoes that are OK to get wet. Dry Fork Gorge is a trail system with a distance of nearly 3 miles and is now available to the general public, nature enthusiasts, and researchers. The user friendly trail is in an 80 acre nature preserve. The trails allow easy hiking access to two caves, a creek, a waterfall, and many other sites containing rare species. By having access to the gorge by a developed trail, users of the conservatory can exercise, relax and even learn while visiting ths preserved area. DIRECTIONS: Participants should meet at the Gorge parking lot at 9:50amCT: From Edmonton, KY, take US 68/KY 80 west. Take a left onto the Old Glasgow Rd. (Route 3234) you will go up blueberry hill, through the S curve, pass Dry Fork Road on the left, go up the second hill and make a left onto Branstetter Road. Go down Branstetter Roadd until you can no longer go straight and you will see the gate to the Gorge entrance right in front of you, follow the rock driveway up the hill and past the barn to the parking lot. CPD makes bootlegging arrest on Parrott Ave., Columbia, KY The Columbia Police Department arrested a Columbia Man for bootlegging last night after selling alcohol to an undercover officer on Parrott Avenue. Michael L. Smith, 49, of Columbia, KY, was charged with the Illegal sale of alcohol in a dry territory. He was lodged in the Adair County Regional Jail. Confiscated in the arrest was 194 cans of beer, 19 pints of liquor, 2 half pints of liquor and $92.00 in cash. The arrest was made by Officers Jr. Murphy and Brad Scholl. -MARK D.
