Birds of Kentucky: The Barred Owl in The Holler

2009-03-26 - The Holler, Old Clearsprings RD, Columbia, KY - Photo by Shamarie Claiborne.
"For the past two years I have been trying to get a picture of this guy/gal!," Shamarie Claiborne writes of this fabulous photograph, and adds, triumphantly, "DID IT TODAY! Enjoy!" We're waiting for more experienced ornithologists to ID this bird. On first look, we want to call it a Barred Owl or possibly a Northern Spotted Owl, a rare bird, we are told. In any case, this is a "Made Our Day" picture. Send comments using any Contact/Submit button.Update, Friday, March 27, 2009: Billy Joe Fudge pronounced the owl a Barred Owl, as did Crystal (last name not given). Crystal wrote, "Looks like a Barred Ow. Adult size should be about 21 inches. Hard to tell size from the photo. It's call would be a excellent identifier. Makes a very distinctive 'who cooks for you' call."

A few other upper tier schools in LWC class also own golf courses

About: A proud time for Columbia and Adair Co., KY!!!

To ColumbiaMagazine.com

When I lived on the campus of the University of the South, in Sewanee, TN, they had a golf course, restaurant, inn and pub owned by the university. When I later moved to Oxford, MS, Ole Miss also owned a golf course. That was back in the mid 80's so I am not sure of the status of those now.

s/Patty Jones

Thanks. It does appear at a few other schools in Lindsey Wilson's class, like Ole Miss and the University of the South, even the University of Louisville and the University of Kentucky, Hunter Durham informed us, have golf courses, as well. Still, the point Tucker Yarberry made is a good one: It is a great distinction for our community.

V.T. Yarberry: A proud time for Columbia and Adair Co., KY!!!

About: Mr. Hamlett announces 1st menu for Mulligan's

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

What a proud time for Columbia and Adair County, KY! No other community in America anywhere near as small as this community has a college or university the equal of Lindsey Wilson.

When I read Mike Hamlett's article about renaming the dining room, "Mulligan's," and the wonderful new name for the golf course, "The Pines at Lindsey Wilson," I was elated.

Great move! I think that the removal of the "country club" from the name of our golf course will greatly enhance the image of this great recreational facility.

It made me wonder whether any other colleges in Kentucky own their own golf course. How many colleges and universities in all of America share this distinction? I'd love to know.

Go, LWC!

s/Tucker Yarberry
The Pines at Lindsey Wilson and Mulligan's are located at 275 Country Club RD, Columbia, KY.

    The flavor is better
"It makes a difference." Pen writes. "Farm fresh eggs have distinctly better taste," Pen writes. He's buys them from a farm in Shelby County. At one time, many miniature farms in Columbia had a hen house. The late Mayor Ralph Willis had one on his acreage located where Franklin Nissan is today, on Jamestown Street, just inside the then city limits. Mrs. Allene Lowe had fresh eggs from 701 Jamestown Street. And fresh eggs were currency at E. Campbell's store at the intersection of Jamestown ST and Russell Road. Today, the practice of keeping a few hens and backyard chickens for the table seems to be coming back, just for the sake of taste. Comments and recollections welcome
