Skate Key brings back Rocky Mount, NC, memories 'Kids had the run of the town without a care in the world' About: Carol Perkins: "Skate Key" To ColumbiaMagazine.com: In the skate key period of my life, I lived in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, in the heart of tobacco country. On Saturdays the city would block off a street near my house for people to roller skate. In the off season, one of the tobacco warehouses would be open for use as a roller rink. The ramps were our version of skateboarding obstacle courses. I remember very well how much trouble we had keeping the skates attached to our shoes, but the fun and falls are more vivid in my memory. The area I'm talking about is where Ava Gardner and Kay Kaiser hailed from; flue cured tobacco was king and kids had the run of the whole town without a care in the world. s/Charles Marshburn 2009-03-15 08:42:39 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Letters and Reader Feedback

Carol Perkins: Skate Key A skate key was a passport to sidewalk skating and Gene's Skating Rink in Edmonton. Skating was romance. The rink was a place where writer met her future husband; but she was interested in older guyes at the time. Now, looking back, she says, "I hung up my skates and someday my mother may find that old skate key buried in a box of memories.' Carol Perkins next earlier article: To the State By Carol Perkins The Skate Key A skate key. It was a passport to sidewalk roller skating for children of the 50's and 60's. I had great times rolling up and down my sidewalk with a song in my head. These skates, however, were not easy to manage. As a matter of fact, they were exasperating. Simply how they attached to our shoes was a recipe for trouble. Here's how they worked: the skater placed his or her shoe on the metal platform, tightened a leather strap around the ankle, and used the skate key to tighten clamps that grasped the soles of the shoes at the toe. The plate of the skate slid to fit the shoe so a child could wear them for years. Rev. Joey N. Welsh: Cumberland, Sweet William, and more ANOTHER ANGLE: the occasional musings of a Kentucky pastor. Previously posted on ColumbiaMagazine.com on April 29, 2007 By Rev. Joey N. Welsh HOW WILL YOUR NAME BE REMEMBERED How often do people in our age take the long view of life decisions and their consequences? How often do we look beyond our current needs, or even our current desires and cravings? I fear the answer is that many people give little heed to what the immediate costs of their decisions might be, let alone how the consequences can continue to echo even beyond the bounds of their mortal lives.Every time I read a tragic story of personal or family destruction related to addiction to methamphetamines or Oxycontin, I wonder how the folks involved could ever have imagined that chapter in their lives ending happily. And when I read about people blown to bits in meth lab explosions, I wonder if they ever thought about the name they would leave behind for any kids lucky enough to survive the trauma.
