Web reporting101: For contributing events, stories about events Exact addresses in announcements will make it easier for those attending The editors of ColumbiaMagazine.com want to make more information available in the briefest form possible, and ask that those submitting news use Rudyard Kiplings six honest serving men to check submissions before hitting the send button. The rules go like this: I keep six honest serving-men5Ws and an H: Who? What? Why? Where? When? and How? If the news story answers these questions, it will yield more results, put more people in seats, in pews, and in the bleachers. We're especially asking for that all events stories include the exact street address and, if that is impossible, tell the street the location is on along with cross streets on either end of the block. With any story about an event, we ask that at least one paragraph, suitable for posting in the CM Events calendar, succinctly announce the Event and answer the 5Ws and and H, and include the exact street address of the venue. We also request that those submitting material for posting on ColumbiaMagazine.com always include their name, phone number, and a return email. Material submitted must be signed if it urges an action or expresses an opinion. E-mails are posted on request, only; phone numbers are posted unless otherwise requested. 2009-03-14 16:42:31 | Comments | Printable version

Letter: Inspired by Doctrine of Barbara Armitage About: "Life is Choices Recycling is a choice" By Pam Kermeen I was inspired by the series of articles on recycling last year by Barbara Armitage. We are now down to one bag of trash per week in our household because I now take all paper/cardboard/plastic to the recycling trailer weekly. I have encouraged my grown children to recycle, as well. A friend called me the other day and asked what I was doing and I told her that I was reading about how to start a compost pile! Life is Choices: Recycling is a choice Thinks Adair County Recycling Center should find way to Recycle Glass; when market returns, ACRC will be in better position to market more recyclables, employ more people, and continue the upward trend of recycling already started. By Barbara Armitage It just breaks my heart to see our Recycle Center have to cut back its services. Reducing any service that has a positive effect on life in Adair County is a sad thing. Heres an even sadder fact to me it doesnt have to be that way. We, and Im speaking of the really big we here, all of us can make just about any thing happen if we want it. Letter: An Amen from the preacher who started the thread About: "Kick Butts Day a great time to kick the smoking habit" To ColumbiaMagazine.com: An excellent, informative and educational article. Letter: Recycling needn't take 1 step forward, then 2 back About: "Agrees with Elizabeth Benson on ACRC" To ColumbiaMagazine.com: I am so glad that other readers agree with my opinion that the glass should be accepted again. Taking this offering away is sending the wrong message to our children about recycling. The city of Columiba has been doing such a wonderful job recycling, I hate to see us take two steps in the wrong direction. s/Candice Robertson Thanks. A correction on your information: It is the Adair Fiscal Court, CJE Ann Melton, and AC Solid Waste Coordinator A.L. Sinclair who have "been doing such a wonderful job on recycling." Recycling has hardly gotten lip service from the City of Columbia, which spends almost 10% of its main budget for use of the landfill. Both units of government are receptive to public input. Hope those who care enough to write will attend the sessions of the Columbia City Council, next at 6:00pmCT on Monday, April 6, 2009, in City Hall, 116 Campbellsville ST, Columbia, KY, and the Adair County Fiscal Court, which meets next on Tuesday, April 14, 2009 at 7:00pmCT in the Adair Courthouse Annex. It's more entertaining than anything on Tv, and it's cheaper than cable. -EW 2009-03-14 09:51:55 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Letters and Reader Feedback

Letter: Better glass in landfill than plastic! Letter: Agrees with Elizabeth Benson on ACRC taking glass About: "Where can glass be recycled now" To ColumbiaMagazine.com: I agree with Elizabeth Benson. It seems that if the campaign to keep plastics out of the landfill is because they take so long to biodegrade, then glass would likely take a tad longer and recycling glass be even more of a boon to the environment. According to the County Executive, the real reason is that the county can sell the plastic recyclables. So why not use some the money generated from the other recycles to off set the cost of the glass. The risk of not taking glass at the center is the dilution of the public interest in recycling. Are we really getting to a point where the county is only going to offer its citizens those services that the county can make money on? s/Jon Halsey 2009-03-14 04:45:25 | Comments | Printable version
