Tom Chaney #197. March 8, 2009: Far Appalachia

Of Writers And Their Books: No. 197 Book Review, Far Appalachia by Noah Adams. Last week's Tom Chaney book review: The Cork Boat by Peter Tremayn

By Tom Chaney

"The Angels' Share"

If you have been following these little pieces for awhile, you know there is no system to my reading. I always have two or three books going at once. And I don't know which I'll pick up next. My life has the tattered billboard as a philosophical thread.

This week's pick is such a choice. I've been reading about storytellers. Thought me, I'll write about storytelling this time. Then my eye fell on a book by Noah Adams. It is called Far Appalachia: Following the New River North [Delacorte Press, 2001].

Parrott Avenue spruced up for spring

City of Columbia Street Department crews removed a trash dump on the creekside of Parrott Avenue this week, eliminating a longtime eyesore and enhancing one of the prettiest areas of Columbia. The shoulder of the road has been built up, making the turn safer. Since annexation, the neighborhood has undergone a transformation, with a new sewer system and a newly paved, widened street, with private improvements matching the city projects. Parrott Avenue extends in a U from Danny Downey's store on the South to Williams' Furniture's Parrott Avenue store on the north.

Chuck Hinman #089: Cutting wood in winter

A Chuck Hinman short story.

CUTTING WOOD IN WINTER

Quite a lot of water has trickled down Wolf Creek since Dad, brother Bob, and I bundled up in warm under and outer wear and rode in a wagon pulled by Dick and Diamond to the timber on the rented "Fauver 80". Once there, we would cut wood to feed the gluttonous furnace of the Hinman household. It was a boring but necessary job if we were to keep warm. Bob and I were healthy maturing teenagers for which this was a Saturday ritual in the cold winter months when we were out of school.

Recent winters are much, much milder than those in the 1930's. Global warming is said to be the explanation. Nebraska winters in the 1930's were brutal with a snow pack lasting most of the winter.

Poetry by BJ Fudge: COALESCE

COALESCE
Man and woman, each complete,
The same as full and empty.
Blend the two to make a life-
A confluence put simply.

Light and dark, each complete,
The same as full and empty.
Meld for either dusk or dawn-
Shades of each seen dimly.

Right and wrong, each complete,
The same as full and empty.
Blend for maybe and I dont know-
The ultimate hypocrisy.

Life and death, each complete,
The same as full and empty.
Blend? No. They never mix-
Each, a separate entity.
-Billy Joe Fudge
